Wooden Penguins
I turned and carved these wooden penguins. I first turned them on the lathe between centers, before turning one end off center. With the band saw I rough cut the beak shape before using the Arbortech mini turbo to refine the shape. After taping the front part with masking tape I painted them with a airbrush. The final step was to finish them with two coats of clear lacquer.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after KZbin started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

You really have an artists eye to be able to see the design you want and know how to get it out of the piece of wood you are working with. I am not a turner myself, I just enjoy watching those who have the vision and skills to do it well.

Love the project! My main takeaway is the step-by-step for the off-center turning. So obvious when you think about it, yet it never occurred to me when I tried off-center turning and my lathe tried to walk out on me. Thanks for the inspiration, Carl!

I'm really glad to see I'm not the only Woodturner to argue with himself and the wood! Nice job Carl. Try using fine sawdust with the CA glue, saves on glue and looks like a knot?

@CarlJacobson 6 жыл бұрын
Hahaha Thanks for the tip too, do you use it with the black too?
@mergrew0110
@mergrew0110 6 жыл бұрын
Carl Jacobson. No, I always use the very thin clear CA, if it's a split or crack it runs down and sets off, if it's a void then I use sawdust. I keep a bunch of spice jars full of different sawdusts, as I use Abranet to sand, it's easy to collect. Some woods contain a natural chemical which sets the CA with a fizz and heat so eye protection is good, also stand aside when turning the lathe on, otherwise the expression "getting stuck in" will take on a whole new meaning! Take care, and make shavings!

Great skill builder project! If you want to stabilize a turned project you can easily add weight to the bottom. Drill a hole and add lead. Find someone who reloads shotgun shells and ask them for lead shot or, the easiest, use lead wool, press it into the hole and then hammer it in with a bolt or piece of dowel to pack it down.

Nice Carl, I’ve been turning for 8 yrs now and you have been a tremendous help and inspiration to me. Thank you. Are you still working at your other job or is this now full time? Thanks

Those look very nice. One question, isn't it better to saw of the corners of your blank with the bandsaw before starting to turn it?

Thank you! It really doesn't take that much time to just turn them off. I don't have a jig for cutting the corners off so it would take me more time to tilt the bed on my band saw and get it lined back up.

For someone who does not draw well, what is the best way to contour the belly and get that nice shape? Great project. Thanks, Keith.

These are great. I do have several questions. What was the point of turning off center? Was this an essential part of making the shape or was this a mitigation technique to work around some flaws in the wood? Also you used a nice airbrush for the paint but not the lacquer. Would the airbrush tool have applied the lacquer better? One last question. I assume this lathe is inside your home and if so is the smell of the lacquer a problem? Again thank you for this video.

Thank you Ed! By turning it off center you take off most of the material before you start carving. This part is not essential to making this project, it just saves a lot of time. Yes the airbrush would work for the lacquer, but I only had the can. It may look like it's in my house, but it's a shop behind my garage.

I will have to watch this video again in an attempt to understand how the off center turning saves times. It is an intriguing idea but I don't understand it yet.
