Yeah if you use the tip you create a cove and the two side wings of the gouge are immediately contacting end grain. I should probably do a short video explaining with examples. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Just made another one..trying to get my beaks to follow the curve. Want it flush. Most people like them, others say..needs eyes!!

@paintilludrop I’m sick of making them lol. In December if I made 9, they sold in a day. People seem to want to buy them in families of 3-5. I guess you could add eyes but I wouldn’t want to make them look cheesy. I taper the beaks slightly in toward the penguin so when you insert it into the hole it kind of bulges beyond the hole but isn’t so wide that you need to follow the curve of the head. Hope that makes sense.

Thank you. The dark wood is like 1.5-2 inches and the light wood is about half an inch. You just need to pay attention on how you mount it on the lathe between centers. You want to offset the center toward the light wood so that the light wood is just beyond the neck diameter. Hope that makes sense.

I’ve answered that question several times in the comments but I plan to do a follow up video trying to answer and explain the ratio and how to mount on the lathe. Short answer is the ratio can vary based on how far the light wood is from the lathe centers. This question has been asked enough that I do feel another video is warranted. Thanks for the question!

Thank you! You want the light wood to be off centered by half the thickness you want the penguin head to be. So if you want the head to be 1 inch, you need to have the light wood half an inch from where you mount the drive spur. I think most of my penguins I used 2 inch walnut and a half inch or so maple. The larger ones were maybe 1 inch maple. This is a frequent question so I might follow up with a short video explaining just that part. Thanks again for watching :)

What are the proportions of light and dark wood? it looks like about 75% - 25% I am going to try this, but wanted to make sure there was enough thickness of light wood for the belly but, without having to make the neck and head too narrow.

I just measured a the blank I have glued up is 2 inches of walnut and 3/8 inches of maple. But I would mount it off center so that I’m really not removing any maple or not much at all. If you want the maple to extend up the neck farther then you would want the maple closer to the center just a bit. Really just try to visualize where the maple will be if you have an half inch head or a 1 inch head and make your best judgment call. I wouldn’t stress over it too much. Give one a shot and adjust if you want it slightly different. Hope that helps! Thanks for the question.

Short round is my favorite with long head shorty coming in second. Whats your rough ratio of light to dark wood?

I used about 2 inch walnut and half inch maple. You just need to think about where the center of the blank should be after rounded. You don’t want the maple too close to the center because then your penguin head will be too skinny to get rid of the maple. Too far away from the center and your light wood will not approach the neck properly. So just try to visualize that when you mount between centers. I offset toward the maple by about half an inch. Hope that all makes sense. If not I can attempt a better answer.

I answered in some other comments in this thread. Really it’s up to you but you want to mount it on the lathe so that the size of the neck you want will remove almost all the light wood. If you want the neck to go up farther then probably use slightly thicker light wood or mount the white wood closer to the center. Hope that makes sense.

It’s kind of cheating to not show us the little flat penguin until after you ask us to choose. These are awesome. I made a bunch of snowmen and snowman head bottle stoppers this year but I’ll definitely be adding some penguins for Xmas 2024.

Wonder the thicknesses of your light and dark wood

I really just winged it and they turned out ok. On the small ones the walnut was about 2 inches and the maple was about a half inch. You do need to take time when you mount the glued up blank on the lathe. You want to make sure you think about what will be left of the light wood when it is round. I pretty much measured the center of the walnut and then mounted the drive spur about half an inch toward the light wood from the center. This made sure I had about a half inch thickness of maple left when the blank was rounded. Hope that makes sense and helps. Thanks for the question.

My dark wood was like 1.5-2 inches and the light wood was like 0.5 inches. You can use a different ratio but when you mount it between centers you want to make sure the light wood will disappear at your desired neck thickness. So if you are getting too much light wood simply move the centers further from the light wood and if you need more light wood move the centers closer to the light wood. It’s not an exact science but I would spend time when mounting between centers to visualize the neck diameter you want and where the light wood will be if it’s turned to that size. Hope that helps.

The penguin on the far left that has a pointy belly had the light wood mounted closer to the center or the light wood and dark wood meeting point was right at the neck thickness. The chubby penguin had the light wood much further from the center point and the light wood/dark wood meeting point was further out than the neck thickness. But when I make some new ones I will try to make some variations and explain it in detail. Thanks for the suggestion
