The “look” used to be white hat cocked to the side, peacoat with collars popped, cigarette in mouth, stained coffee mug on the left hand, left foot resting on a mooring line.

It is also worth mentioning that genuine peacoats can be buttoned either left on right or right on left, it is because reefers would button them according to the wind direction.

Fortunately I live in the NYC area. Schott is manufactured in NJ. Every year, they have a factory sale. They discount their clothing at killer savings. I have the navy peacoat for $50. Needless to say, over the years I have picked up several Schott shirts, leather jackets, nylon jacket & a t shirt.

Got mine from 6 years on submarines out of New London. Best piece of gear issued. Great for keeping warm with the winter wind whipping down the Thames. Also, the only time I would pop my collar to keep warm.

1) Love your content. I look forward to it, mainly because of your philosophy on quality, and the honest approach. 2) I got my peacoat from a Salvation Army Thrift Store, 100% virgin wool, navy blue, for $25 Canadian. It was a boxy fit but the shoulders fit, so I had it shortened from shin length to lower thigh length, and sewed on my own buttons and made double-breasted to make it not so boxy. It was a legendary purchase!!

00:32 tote bag carried by that mariner At one time these were very popular - you could buy them at Army-Navy stores or just about any bag shop. My dad (former merchant marine) had one for many moons. I also had one in my youth. Sadly, they are not made any more. Peacoats are good and generally keep you warm & dry. However, they lack a hood so that it will not keep the rain or snow or wind from your face and neck.

They are the best winter coat what you can get. They look great, they comfortable and very warm. I wanted one since I saw Sean Connery in the opening of the Hunt for Red October, Now I have 3 of them. I bought the first when I was in college, the second one was an upgrade in material (80% wool outer, 100% cotton lining), the third one is a longer version, which is great as an overcoat. The coolest outfit in a harbor city, I felt like a star in Hamburg. You can also use the lapels to protect your neck, if you button all of the buttons then roll the lapels up.

Have my own Peacoat from the Navy, But i really like the Swedish Wool Longcoats, and I just bought a Hungarian Wool Trench coat for 50.00. Both were brand new but from the 60's and 80's. Used a Green overcoat dbl breasted made of cotton and waxed it for a bush coat and a rain cape and it is now a light weight, (sorta, wax added a couple of pounds) foul weather coat. But a nice Peacoat, for a casual night out in the city is always good. How ever wear a sweater, cause the girls always seem to get cold, then get real happy when you let them wear it.

Mine was issued in Boot Camp in 1971. It was eventually stolen in the mid-80's, and the replacement one I had to buy was not the same quality. We used to wear the flap of our dress blue "cracker jacks" on the outside of the peacoat, even though we were told not to. We had beards then also. :) . USN (Ret) '71-'92

I had my dad's navy peacoat but don't know what happened to it. didn't mean as much to me when I was younger as would now. he was in the Navy and in the Cuban missile crisis as his destroyer was in the blockade. In January this year (2024) I bought the Triple Aught Design Dreadnaught Peacoat. Missed it last year as it sells out. This thing was expensive $695. Though I saved about a hundred bucks with their military discount. This jacket is amazing! its made from 100% Pure New Melton Wool. Has four pockets. Two hand warmer pockets and two stash pockets. This thing had excellent build quality and very warm. I employ you to check it out! And Carl get one and do a review! I have bought a lot of TAD products and they are all excellent quality!

Had a version of peacoat at naval academy along with longer bridge coat and a short “campus jacket”. I was a Marine and tossed everything but campus jacket for sentimental reasons. Should have kept those heavy coats for posterity. It was kind of obscene the uniform items I tossed, some of which had no actual Navy counterpart even. Then I dropped about $3k on my Marine officer uniforms and accoutrement.

I had a peacoat when I was in the navy. I loved that peacoat it was warm and fit me very well. One cold Winter Friday when I was ready to go on Weekend liberty I went to the peacoat locker to find that some SOB Had stolen my peacoat. The guys I was with suggest should I just take someone else's but I couldn't rationalize doing that so I Hitchhiked home from Boston to Connecticut in the Winter and it was cold as hell out there with just my dress blues ,of course I never did find out who stole my peacoat but I hope it caught fire while they were wearing it!!!

Thanks researching the % of wool in navy peacoats matters. So I ordered LL bean 2xl regular black peacoat and it fits me perfectly. I’m 6’2 255lbs chest 48 1/2 inches biceps 20 inches. The coat was perfect fit meaning if I reach 265lbs I will be too big for the coat. Now I know importance of less wool compared to 70-100% wool coats. I have 100% wool

I had the Schott NYC peacoat that I purchased back in the 1990s for around $100. Sad to say I got rid of it when I was living in Florida because I never wore it and with 100% wool it was very stiff compared to my puffer jacket and ichy. Now I'm shopping for a new one and looking for a peacoat with more flexibility that is not so heavy.

I searched high and low for a amazing Peacoat. I literally spent five years trying on pea coats and couldn't find the proper fit or style. The fashion brands were too thin, or didn't button the weather out properly. The originals were too boxy and let the wind up the hem, and Schott was just too restrictive. I couldn't move my arms. I finally found the perfect pea coat last year at &Sons. I had the silly arm strap removed at my local tailor, but the jacket fits beautifully. The wool is fantastic, and the thing buttons right up into a weather fortress.

The Pea coat is a great. Can dress it up or down. A good quality one will last a lifetime or more if you take care of it. I wanted a few in different colors because I liked them do much, do I figured second hand shops might have a gem if I'm patient and persistent. I managed to get 3 of my favorite colored pea coats at 2 different second hand shops. One black one grey & one in camel brown. All in good shape without spending a lot and was able to get 3 for less then one brand new. It was a bargain in my eyes. If there was any navy/army surplus stores I would have went first but none in my area, but if I see any when I'm out of town I'll be sure to take a look. Anyways nice review on your realistic take and history regarding the pea coat. All the best..

Such a cool cool video i watched twice. BTW I;m retired US Navy and the Peacoat remains a part of the uniform for US Navy Sailors ( and the Coast Guard ) in fact mine is sitting in storage along with all my old uniform stuff as i type. its true you can find fantastic deals one used examples at Army Navy Surplus stores. And, If you have a military veteran or active duty Navy friend whose allowed to shop at the base Exchange you can have him/her purchase a brand new one for a couple hundred bucks if you just NEED a new one LoL! Also i read below form another former Sailor talking about his getting stolen and man that is SO TRUE,.on larger ships and naval bases both Peacoats and those Leather Navy Flying jackets sometimes get "procured" by others LoL. Its not worth going to Captains Mast ( military navy punishment ) to me,.but apparently people do it. Keep up the great vids man!

I have a Gloverall Churchill Peacoat, named after the British wartime Prime Minister....quite expensive but 100% Melton wool, and quite simply built like a tank.

Great video. I'm not sure if we have Navy surplus stores in Canada, but if so I'd get one.

Ive been wanting one myself for the past few years. After some thrift store hunting I unfortunately had to accept that the ones you usually find, wich I guess are 80s and 90s are cut absolutely terrible for tall guys. Big big arm diameter but usually to short at the cuff. So for tall slim guys its off to buying new unfortunately.
