A masterclass in artistry. I heard him many times at both the Old Met and the New Met. It was an era of great tenors and I had the fortune of hearing all the great post-war tenors and they all thrilled me; however, he was always my favorite. He brought a spirituality to everything he sang. He was also an audience favorite because he always moved us profoundly.

I've been a pro musician all my life (English) A self taught rock guitarist (I know!!!!!!) Many years ago I thought I 'might' like opera! So I asked one of my musician friends father (who was an Italian living in England but having trained as an Opera singer in Italy) to give me a list of singers to check out, not really expecting much!!! Top of that list was Bergonzi. I managed to find an album (vinyl days!) To say I was floored by his voice is the understatement of the year! I had NEVER heard such beauty of tone and delivery!!! Over the years I've collected all the 'names' ! And of course been thrilled by the likes of Corelli, Gigli, Del Monaco etc. But Bergonzi holds my heart! His two M. Butterfly's, one with Tebaldi, one with Scotto, show the most touching romantic flawless vocal to make it my all time Bergonzi ! Quite unlike me!!! when he appeared years!!! ago in London I wrote my one and only fan letter to tell him of the unbelievable pleasure his voice had brought me. I wanted him to know that his level of talent could reach and effect anyone. Even a self taught rock guitarist!!! And yes! I've still got the autographed photo reply. Great post!

As a professional opera singer, I can tell you that Bergonzi was one of the greatest and he was an extraordinary vocal coach as well. His musicality was enormous. His acting was not very good but with a technique and musicality of the very highest order and anyone who says differently just doesn’t know anything about singing!
@richardbowery7423

@@4444marla For me the most important word in your lovely post is 'musicality', it's the magic ingredient that can't be taught. It's the part that separates a perfectly good and professional performance from the one that somehow touches, or moves you. Probably won't mean anything to you (as an opera singer ? ) but for me as a guitarist, Jeff Beck (recently died) had that. Musicality in an artist, leaves you with 'something' after the performance is over. For me as a rock guitarist to love an 'operatic' Bergonzi says musicality itself translates. Love the, across the world situation, of Bergonzi's talent joining two strangers. Shame not everyone has a 'live (like) and let live (like) attitude. Good post.

Can't you hear the wobble and the constriction in the upper half of the range? Or do you believe the constriction is not due to age? If so I agree ,he was constricted even in his late 30's .The wobble however come later.
@tonyashbridge2910
@tonyashbridge2910 4 жыл бұрын
He was still singing quite well here but the top is not really secure and there are hints of wobble. Like a few other tenors he went on too long but for about 20 years he was right at the very top.
@Nangis123
@Nangis123 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonyashbridge2910 No . He had debuted as a tenor in the very early 1950's and the constriction is already audible in late 1950's studio recordings like La Boheme .This is not 20 years ,it's less than 10 .Singers always do multiple takes in studio with the best released . If Begonzi's best studio take was constricted ,it means he was indeed constricted , the studio techies had some means to manipulate recordings back then but constriction can't be "fixed" . And what we hear here are not hints of a wobble but a full blown wobble
@tonyashbridge2910
@tonyashbridge2910 4 жыл бұрын
Not a great singer in your estimation then. You are in the minority. His recordings of 31 Verdi Arias made in 1974 are justly famed. As I said he was right at the top for some 20 years. The constriction you refer to was very minor in earlier years and by no means a major issue even in 1974. But I guess we must agree to differ.
@Nangis123
@Nangis123 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonyashbridge2910 I don't know what you consider "great" .Most abused term ever IMO .My first comment was in reply to Ursula's saying there is no voice deterioration to be heard ,not about whatever "greatness" means to you .I can hear the constriction and the wobble and I could hear both for a very long time . As to my being in minority ,fans always say this about people who point out uncomfortable truths .You have a right to your own opinions but not to your own truths .If you want to believe he was at the "top" for 20 years ,whatever top means to you ,and if you believe this is a Verdi tenor ,you probably have never set eyes on a Verdi score . I am certainly not the one to try to disabuse you of both notions ,not worth my time.I will only say yours is a blanket statement as much worth as any blanket statement involving superlatives and a figure rounded up to next multiple of 10 .Fans are very fond of superlatives in conjunction with round numbers

i saw his last Chicago recital in the late 80's. What a Sunday afternoon! He sang every major tenor aria. The encores (@least another hour) were all the famous Neapolitan songs ending with "Non ti scordar"- he repeated the chorus 20+ times as people filed down the aisle, filling the stage with gifts of wine, balsamic, cakes, etc. Watching this brought back many memories. I was one of the few non-italians that managed a ticket. Scary Mafia types were everywhere.

Firstly, there is nothing wrong with him, he had a strong manly face and secondly, we don't go to opera or listen to music to criticize the looks of singers! Anyway, when you love the voice of a opera star, they become goodlooking or beautiful to you! No wonder we have likes of Kaufman being one of the most popular opera stars of today!

During his prime Bergonzi was, IMO, the outstanding stylistic representative for the tenor roles of Verdi. Even though parts such as Radames & Manrico were not ideal for him his musicianship & respect for the Verdian line & dynamics still paid dividends especially in the more lyrical passages. Here he sings from roles in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA & LUISA MILLER that really, I feel, suited him best.

He is in especially good voice here. The impeccable style was always there, of course, but by this time the sound could be somewhat occluded and he flatted a lot on top. Not this night.. Really splendid.
