Everyone loves Alcaraz's insane power hitting, but what really impressed me was his defense. Towards the end Tiafoe was not getting any free points. On multiple occasions he hit a 130 mph serve, a massive +1, and a deft drop-volley, only for Alcaraz to come screeching in for the pass. Alcaraz might have the world record for most sliding in a hard-court match.

I’ve been watching tennis for 50+ years and let me just say that this is tennis skill at a VERY high level. One thing Frances could learn is when he’s way out of position, don’t hit it with so much pace-hit more of a floater to give himself time to get back in position. The reaction time of Alcaraz combined with such magical racquet skill is almost otherworldly.
@JuanPerez-wt7ux2 жыл бұрын
ALCARAZ is simply the best tennis player at the moment. So funny to watch. Power, strength, amazing rallies.... And he is only 19. A Federer/Djokovic/Nadal mix. As a tennis fan, I hope he stays out there for years!!!

Tiafoe could take the match if he were more consistend with his serve. He has an amazing forehand as well. The thing is Alcaraz keeps improving tournament after tournament. At his current level he can win everything but he keeps growing, and that's scary.
@MrClebophd2 жыл бұрын
Tiafoe looked both mentally and physically exhausted in the final set. He also had a dip in performance in the third set. With experience, and possibly more physical conditioning, Tiafoe will be a challenger for every grand slam, except perhaps the Paris clay.
@superjarri2 жыл бұрын
@@MrClebophd I Agree, those are the main reasons why his serve fell of a cliff. You don't forget how to serve. He even went down to a 20% first services, which is totally unacceptable for a pro player. Despite that, he has de quality and tools to win, for sure.

I think both sides has learned many things in this encounter. IMO should be chosen as one of classic matches in US Open. I like Tiafoe's return game against Alcaraz's serve as his return response time is short as he stands nearer to front, perhaps Tiafoe can read Alcaraz's serve well. As usual Alcaraz presented athletic nature and great defense, and seems Alcaraz made some favorable mind progress on the pressure of the crowd, although still made some errors during some crucial points. So many winning points from both sides. I can say either side deserved the win. Quite a match.
@batmon6962 жыл бұрын
Oh Alcaraz...love the guy and his game is huge. The next big thing. He just NEEDS to convert more break points and more efficiently. I know that is a lot to ask and he is only 19, but plz bring your A-game tomorrow!
@Alboravin2 жыл бұрын
Yep! I think this is the last major improvement left for him along with a more consistent first serve and a better adaptation to grass courts for Wimbledon. He just needs to not overthink it and not get cute on some of these break points. Improve the shot selection and maintain focus better on the crucial points, and play with more margin of error when necessary. He doesn’t have to go for 100% all the time on those shots that would have been a winner to earn him a successful break of serve. Once he figures that out, and just goes for 80% to avoid the unforced error and bag a crucial winner, it’s going to be scary to play against him. I think it will all come together with time and we’ll see something even more special than what we’re seeing now, in 2-3 years when he’s 21/22 and entering his prime.

For one, the first serve % at 47% is much too low and I wonder what would have been the score line had the first serve % been 60% with the 70% points won on first serve being maintained. Alcaraz is himself, not any hybrid of the Big 3. He has completely unique characteristics like the abundance of use of the drop shots (no Big 3 player uses the drop shot as much as Alcaraz). Once in a generation talent. His backhand is different from Djokovic but his sliding BH crosscourt passes on clay, once on grass is eerily reminiscent of Novak. His grip is semi western, more in the Nadal mold and forehand has more topspin, but when he flattens it out definitely looks like Federer. But I also think he attacks the net more than Federer does. Definitely more natural than Roger was at 19. His touch on drop shots and lobs though is surreal. Can't teach this. It's a gift. Plus he is an incredible athlete.

Alcaraz might be impressive, but it wasn't with ease he reached the final. Several 5 sets matches that could have gone either way goes to show he has a long way to go to be a dominant force. A Sampras, Federer or Nadal at their peak would have dismissed a Tiafoe or Sinner in straight sets. He's only 19, so let's hope he does indeed have a long way to go and lots of room for improvement. Tennis hasn't had a new Nadal or Federer in 20 years!! The new gen has been boring to watch, so let's hope we get Alcaraz and the emergence of a true rival in the next couple years, that we haven't heard of yet.
