Since he was born, Carlos has worked with his family at their wholesale fruit shop in the 7th Street Market downtown. He wakes up at 1:30AM six days a week, ready to open the shop by 3AM. Growing up nearby in Boyle Heights, Carlos has had a front row seat to the gentrification happening in that neighborhood, and now he sees similar changes coming to the market. Carlos contemplates the hard work and contributions of his family to the community and weighs the pros and cons of new investments coming in.

I used to go here for fruit all the time -- I grew up nearby. If you're in DTLA or nearby, go to their website. My dad said he's been ordering stuff delivered to him now, because of Covid. Let's keep our LA mom & pop shops alive!

Used to go to this market with my family sooo often when I was younger. Loved it so much, I had no problem waking up at 6am to head over. I appreciate them so much, really feels like home over there.

It's pretty incredible that his father started this business with $200. To have the foresight and confidence to take that step when he probably needed that money just to eat is really amazing. I hope that the local government is able to keep rents low enough there so that the longstanding vendors don't get pushed out by upmarket restaurants, boutiques etc.

I'm a nurse and I worked 12 hours a shift from 7pm til 7am for the past 10 years and I have to say, my body aches for the mornings now. Currently I'm working 11pm til 730am and in school for nurse practitioner. I can't wait to work normal when I graduate. Working nights is tough. Ur time gets all screwed up affecting u mentally and physically 🤕

This is so powerful. Something about seeing the work ethic of the marginalized and their ability to continuously change and adapt to their surroundings is honorable. Saludos Elias Produce. Fuerte!

I do feel the whole fear of going to a nice place and just have coffee. I clean for a living, after that I work on my veggie garden and then I fell wierd just going to the supermarket. After a whole day I am not clean on smeel like perfume. But my husband always says: as long as you have the money (not credit card) to pay, you belong everywhere and its not of their bisinees how you are dressed.

_THESE_ are the people that really run the world. They are truly essential. - - Gentrification, I think it's a bad thing if you didn't buy in the area when it was 'poor' side of town

And the orange agent dares to build a wall. Go figure it. Heartwarming story. Fruit and produce are nit high margin business. There is also the day by day grind to move inventory, haggle , showcase, unload, load. And yet, this is how fruit is made to our table , made into freshly baked pies at the nearby bakery, or become smoothies at the quick serve restaurant. That is a not so glamorous part of the California Engine. While many pack and leave, for Texas ,Nevada, Arizona , these busy busy bees stay put, keep making the city and counties functioning places to live.
