A few of things I've noticed through watching this engine build. 1st is that when you lubricate main, head, or rod bolts you need to make sure you're lubricating the underside of the head as well as the threads as both experience friction when tightening and will throw torque values off. 2nd is that when you're doing torque turn you do your initial torque and when you do the angle alternating sides is pointless because the seating torque has been achieved and the angle is solely to stretch the bolt and achieve clamping force, the cap is as flush as its going to get. 3rd you shouldn't be touching the actual bearing surface with bare skin as the oils secreted by your skin supposedly damage the bearing surface and you're usually told you should only touch it with gloves or not at all. 4th they also say you shouldn't smear the grease but just put the cap on because of risk of contamination. 5th when you clean engine internals you shouldn't use red shop rags to do it, lint free towels only. 6th I would avoid clamping the actual connecting rod in a vise as it can damage the rod, the way I clock my rings is by clamping a heel bar in the vise and hanging the piston by the wrist pin then I set up the rings and put on the ring compressor. I also start in the middle when I torque main bearings and work my way out in a swirl pattern, same as head bolts but I don't know what detroit says. Also the whole "orient the snap ring at 12 or 6 o'clock only" is a bunch of shit. Every engine I've ever torn down has had the snap rings all over the place and they've been like that since the factory. That said I still orient every ring to 12 oclock for reasons ill explain if you like but this comment is pretty lengthy already. Overall excellent engine build series so far. I worked for a freightliner dealer before moving to an engine specific shop that sees no detroit action where I've been since and we never had a DD series apart while I worked there so I was hoping to learn more about them.

So glad I found your channel this last week. Been binge watching, and every video I’ve seen is great. Love how thorough you are in this art. I’ve been a professional OTR driver for four years and I’m about to get out of it to follow my passion, which is what you do. I’m in the process currently of buying every tool to start my own shop (while I’m making great money) so that when I’m ready I’ll be good to go. Thanks for the great videos, you should be proud of your art and attention to detail. Rare these days for sure.

Very impressed with your videos! You are very similar in your work ethics, thoughts, and personality as I....I am just becoming familiar with DD15 engine, haven't had the opportunity/need to become technical with these. But now am thrown into the ring to learn about these. Appreciate any thoughts/directions to becoming familiarized with issues, potential issues, repairs. I like your ways and skills., Thanks. Allen.

Thank you for the compliments. When I first became familiar with the DD15 engine I was intimidated. But it’s an engine just like any other. Oil changes on the DD13, DD15 and DD16 are all the same. Oil change first, start the engine and verify oil pressure goes up then do the fuel filter change after. This is probably the most critical step in maintenance. Never change them at the same time like other engines. After you have changed the fuel filter allow the engine to run, there will be air in the system and you might experience a hard start. Don’t use starting fluid. Email me and I can help you as best I can.

I noticed most shops recommend truck owners use Detroit OEM parts when rebuilding your DD15 engine. Are you able to get all Detroit brand new engine parts instead of refurbished parts? I think Detroit is the only brand that charge core charges for some of the engine parts. I was never offered refurbished parts over new parts at Detroit or Freightliner for all the rebuild parts. So I'm thinking Detroit and Freightliner are selling use refurbished parts for new parts. Since Detroit don't sell complete over haul kits you will have to buy each part individually pushing up the cost to around $9000.00 or more. You compare that to a after market engine rebuild kits that starts around $4000.00 with brand new parts not refurbished parts. Have you worked with PAI kits for the Detroit DD15 engine? I'm thinking about going that route since most of the parts look the same between the 2. I just have a problem reusing old refurbished egine parts in my truck. Thanks for the great videos!

Before, you do the inframe job or overhead. How do you determine what caused the engine failure to happen?
@CarlosDieselElectric
@CarlosDieselElectric Жыл бұрын
That is a tricky question because it depends on the symptoms or problems. For example, if the truck is burning oil then most likely something is going on in the pistons or liners. If you are burning coolant then most likely the EGR cooler but that doesn’t mean you don’t have problem with the cylinder head or head gasket that might be allowing coolant into the compression chamber. If you have excessive blow by then you might have to look at a worn engine. So it is important to ask questions and verify the complaint before getting started.

@@CarlosDieselElectric Thanks for the quick response. I want to ask you another question. I had my injectors replaced because the truck wouldn't stay running. I drove the truck 300 miles after the injectors where replaced and the truck started blowing grayish smoke from the tailpipe a lot of it. It's not deleted. I took it back to the dealership and they want to break down the engine and look at the head instead of replacing the injectors again. Is this something that you would recommend from your experience? I can tell you value your job, so I trust your thoughts. Thanks for the response.
@CarlosDieselElectric
@CarlosDieselElectric Жыл бұрын
@@tracannon i would put that on them. If they made a bad call it’s on them. If the injectors are bad they have warranty. Did they install factory reman or factory new injectors? They both have a 1 year warranty but I have had two sets of injectors be defective. Finally had better results with the 3 set. All of them were factory reman
@tracannon
@tracannon Жыл бұрын
Yes, they are remanufactured injectors.The lady said that's all they could put on them. I'm going to talk with another shop. Plus, i have to pay another tow bill. Will there also be a chance I have to change my 1box or the dpf filters? I've seen a few other videos that said you might have to. Your channel is a lifesaver. I was about to take my truck to the auction and get rid of it. I just put 16k in it. Didn't want to spend any more money. God bless you and your family.

Does that arrow on the connecting rod cap facing the fan the front of the engine?

Yes, the arrow (cap) faces forward towards the fan. Same goes for the piston, goes forward and the open or grove goes to exhaust side.

Great question, I am going to do a video on just how much this will cost. But you are looking at about $17,000 for an inframe. Now the work being done on the videos for the major overhaul will be more than that because of the labor involved plus the removing of the engine block.
