When I was young and learning I saw Nimzowitch Sæmisch it amazed me and nothing could ever touch it. Yet twice in two days Magnus produced something comparable. A fine analysis as ever Daniel and great commentary. In the end even as a big admirer of Magnus, Nimzowitch Sæmisch takes the prize because no one knew it was possible then. Thanks Daniel and keep up the good work.

It's like Fedoseev was playing without a rook and dark-squared bishop for a lot of that game.. amazing how Carlsen stifles his opponent's pieces while activating his own. Brilliant coverage - thanks!

Just want to add my big congrats on your co-coverage of the Chessable Masters, just finished. The team you finished up with was superb, and you and Judit and Tania worked together so well, without a seam, so professional and friendly and so entertaining. I could not keep up with the pace, so only just finished watching yesterday's coverage, but it was just as fresh as if it were really live. And it was live, for me, because I hadn't seen the results yet. I can only hope that somehow, somewhere, all this precious digital chess history is being preserved somewhere.

This game reminds me in a way of Fischer's positional crush against Spassky in their World Championship match. It was a Queen's Gambit declined, but the way the bishop sits calmly on c4 with the pawn on c3, shutting out black's potential counterplay, well, it just hits a chord in me. In that game the bishop shut out the rooks, while in this game it shuts out the opposing bishop, as well as stopping any pawn advances on the queenside. It's really hard for me to see the power of that bishop. I put it on that diagonal often in games where black has a central pawn "blockade", with a strong but cramped position. Often I'm not able to organize a break like f5 and my bishop looks silly. Still, I carry on, following in the footsteps of the masters in the hope that something will rub off eventually. This game, as well as the previous, were absolute gems. Such beautiful play by Carlsen, merging the dynamic and the strategic almost perfectly.

It took me a few seconds to realize that Black didn't have a fork at 4:54 with exf5 due to Qf3/Qf4 and fxe4 is not possible due to mate on f7.

I feel sorry for Fedoseev. He is an excellent player, but he got two lessons from Carlsen he will never forget. I don't think his resignation was too early in either game. Playing 10-15 moves without any plan and knowing that he is being slowly crushed must have been psychologically hard to bear.

The zugzwang game Alekhine-Nimzowitch where Alekhine used his famous gun battery rook-rook-queen along the c-file on a pinned black knight, comes to mind. Superb analysis.

When Bent Larsen released his little book “Solide Åbninger” (“Solid Openings”) back in the 1980’ies,, I devoured the book! It is for the most part about playing black in the Caro-Kann. But I completely gave up the opening after two games against a player I would normally beat, because I miserably lost both games having thoroughly disliked my positions throughout. And since then the white side of the opening has been my most tremendous weapon, even against much higher rated players. I know that most players will disagree, but I simply cannot help thinking that the opening is very bad for black! So seeing Magnus win in it with white is a joy, and no surprise.

Once White clamps down on the Kingside, the move Kf8 is unbearably ugly. If Black nudged the rook to g8 instead, prepared Queenside castling, and clamped down on d5, it's not clear that White had much of anything, although I suspect that this entire variation is pretty bad for Black.

I'd rate these two games in top 10 of Carlsens best games ever. Unbelievably sadist play, making daring positional sacrifices for unbelievably long term compensation. The clarity if his play was so great as well - kill every bit of counterplay and keep improving the pieces.

Daniel I was trying to remember a game thought maybe you could help me. It was Akobian vs someone at a US chess championship years ago. He had a winning position with most pieces off the board but fumbled it and I believe drew. It would have been a big upset at the tournament , thinking it may have been vs So or Nakamura, maybe Fabi Do you recollect this?

Do you think this style to win by paralysing the opponents pieces is in style because of Alpha Zero leading the way?
@drewe95143 жыл бұрын
This is a common line that is extremely risky for white. It looked more loose than what Alpha Zero might go for. The positional dominance of those pawns on h+e5 are reminiscent of what we have learned from computers. I would still consider this human chess as these ideas have been sorted out and played often at a high level by these guys.
