The Soviets weren't there, but the Romanians were. In past Olympics, the Americans weren't even in the mix. So I think '84 was a combination of factors. Mary Lou beat the Romanians, who were a HUGE force so she would have been a factor even if the Soviets had been there. She earned that gold.
