I never cared exactly who she wrote it about. What made the song a HIT was the fact that all of us could apply it to whoever WE wanted it to be about. It’s My Opinion that the majority of artists suffer from some form of vanity. Probably one of my favorite moments on 30 Rock is when Alec Baldwin is making a video diary for his expected child. I think entitling a song as "You're So Vain" with the lyric following that being - "you 'probly' think this song is about you" - when in fact, it IS about that person, is more contradictory than any song I know of. And it blows my mind that I'm the only one who ever noticed this - in MY world. I'm sure I'm not the only one who ever noticed this EVER. I would even guess that Ms. Simon saw this contradiction (or question) when she was writing it and simply thought it to be good writing because it's "artistically ambiguous." No, it's a contradiction.
