Way ahead of its time before any rock artists did songs from the great American songbook, it went below the Top 40 Billboard charts. So much for public taste. I guess the public didn't quite get it then but Carly did! So unique in her delivery technically and emotionally. I so wish that she would have toured in those days.

It’s important to remember that relationships are not scientific or make sense - nor does this thing we call love evolve into a program or a mathematical equation. The feelings remain the same from year to year and from age to age. We need each other even as we can’t live with each other.

I have to agree with Sulynn1955 truly the most haunting and saddest version of this classic song-I tend to burst into tears every time I listen to it and I,m a mature male in my late60s you see many years ago there was a lady friend of mine whom I was emotionally rather mean to-and this song reminds me of those days,so yes this beautiful haunting version actually breaks my heart as the lovely lady whom I owe so much 2 passed away without me having the chance to ever 2 speak with her again-

Maybe it's unfair to compare female with male singers, but no one! sings this song like Matt Monro. That's not to discredit Carly's version; it's delightful. Matt had a voice that made me a fan the first time I heard him. Everything he sang was near perfection - smooth, great tonal quality, exquisite phrasing, just the right emotion. You name it, Matt had it. He died in the late 1980's at 54, No one can ever take his place!

Carly Simon introduced my generation to this song. Until her album TORCH was released the summer of '81 no popular singer of Carly's stature was having anything to do with the 'Great American Songbook.' As if to say, “You haven't forgotten Carly's version, have you?” -- the intuitive genius of KZbin sent this my way, reminding me that it is, after all, a 'girl song' - composed by a woman who'd lost her husband; on the basis of her poem Hoagy Carmichael wrote his poignant lyric. ---- I see my namesake reviewed this one “3 years ago” and included a personal anecdote from 40 years ago: "I remember playing Carly's version for my musical father on the cassette player in my car, circa 1984. He wasn't fond of the arrangement - with the same monotonous 'pedal point' note played on piano throughout, from beginning to end. He was a traditionalist and I see his point. Still, for sentimental reasons, Carly's rendition remains my 'other favorite.' Yours too?" Wikipedia note: Torch is the 10th studio album by American singer-songwriter Carly Simon, released by Warner Bros. Records, in August 1981. It was Simon's first album devoted to standards, namely torch songs, relating unrequited love or rejection. The album also features one Simon original, "From the Heart".[1] The album was recorded during her marriage breakup to James Taylor, which was announced shortly after the release of the album. Thanks for sharing Carly Simon. Celebrated elsewhere this day (3/25/2024) search " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition, Songwriting Workshop, Harmony Central " kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWHCaaqoiK-Krq8

But I should never think of Spring, for that would surely break my heart in two . . . Up early (to give my Valentine the knee rub she needed to fall back to sleep) and Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio had just played Carly Simon's recording of I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL my favorite ballad by Hoagy Carmichael (often credited with both the words and the music - but there's a story there). In 1981 Carly, who is my age, was the only popular singer to record an album of standards, or songs like this one that 'deserved to be standards' (it would be a few more years before Linda Ronstadt and Nelson Riddle would do three LP's worth of standards that sold six million copies). Yes, when Carly recorded “I Get Along Without You Very Well” she was effectively introducing this poignant song to fans our own age. I didn't know at the time that Frank Sinatra included it on his most famous album in 1955. He was the first important singer to record the song since it was introduced, then disappeared in 1939 (except for Hoagy singing the song on screen in 1952). He'd been given a poem by someone named Ruth Brown Thompson and borrowed a phrase or two from Chopin to give it a tune. He tried to track Ruth Brown Thompson down before its first performance on radio. He later learned she'd died the night before - not knowing how inspirational her poem of years earlier had been to the composer who gave us “Stardust.” Is it at KZbin, I wondered. Carly's version? Yes! Now, back to sleep! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWHCaaqoiK-Krq8 The brief Wiki entry - in its entirety "I Get Along Without You Very Well" is a popular song composed by Hoagy Carmichael in 1939, with lyrics based on a poem written by Jane Brown Thompson, and the main melodic theme on the Fantaisie-impromptu in C sharp minor, Op 66, by Frédéric Chopin.[1] Thompson's identity as the author of the poem was for many years unknown; she died the night before the song was introduced on radio by Dick Powell.[1] The biggest-selling version was a 1939 recording by Red Norvo and his orchestra (vocal by Terry Allen).[2] Carmichael and Jane Russell performed the song in the 1952 film noir The Las Vegas Story.[1]

Earlier this evening (as it does about once a year -- just for me, I'd like to think!) Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio played my "other favorite version" of I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL - from Carly Simon's very first album of standards, titled 'Torch'(has it really been 40 years?) My favorite - apart from the definitive version for Sinatra's 'In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning' album (1955). Sinatra rescued the song from oblivion and gave it a future. The simple truth: After its introduction in 1939, no important artist attempted the song; apart from jazz giant Chet Baker who recorded his version the year before Sinatra -- for an upcoming album “Chet Baker Sings” that wasn't released until a year after "Wee Small Hours" (1956). The Wikipedia entry in its four-sentence entirety tells us all we need really need to know about it: "I Get Along Without You Very Well" is a popular song composed by Hoagy Carmichael in 1939, with lyrics based on a poem written by Jane Brown Thompson, and the main melodic theme on the Fantaisie-Impromptu in C sharp minor, Op 66, by Frédéric Chopin.[1] Thompson's identity as the author of the poem was for many years unknown; she died the night before the song was introduced on radio by Dick Powell.[1] The biggest-selling version was a 1939 recording by Red Norvo and his orchestra (vocal by Terry Allen).[2] Carmichael and Jane Russell performed the song in the 1952 film noir The Las Vegas Story.[1] I remember playing Carly's version for my musical father on the cassette player in my car, circa 1984. He wasn't fond of the arrangement - with the same monotonous 'pedal point' note played on piano throughout, from beginning to end. He was a traditionalist and I see his point. Still, for sentimental reasons, Carly's rendition remains my “other favorite.” Yours too? Most viewed version (257K views) and first offering this night at KZbin - an early video. Thanks for sharing Carly Simon. @tommybass40 I feel as though women of the 70s and 80s had something to prove. They weren't as concerned with being sexy but with being taken seriously and looked upon equally as men are in the work force and everything else. Which in turn is the sexiest thing of all, an independent confident woman. But now a lot of women are focused on just being sexy rather than being everything they can be. Which makes it unsexy and trying to hard. People are so consumed with looking younger these days.
