First rule of songwriting: "Study the masters" -- Gene Lees . A decade ago Carly Simon appeared with Jimmy Webb on daytime television. Carly and Jimmy - like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin and very few others - wrote both words and music to all of their songs. The “very few others” includes, most notably, Frank (Guys & Dolls) Loesser. Significantly these two great songwriters agreed on one of Loesser's lesser-known, but no less beautiful ballads, SPRING WILL BE A LITTLE LATE THIS YEAR.

so very cool- too bad for the mix on the screaming guitar- they must have thought they needed to rock-it-up....that didn't matter- obviously.... it was stunningly beautiful and only Frank Loesser could write a song so perfectly.

The song, written by Frank Loesser, was first sung by Deanna Durbin in the 1944 film noir entitled Christmas Holiday (also starring Gene Kelly). She performed the song without any emotion, which probably was a big shock to her many fans, but oddly fit the mood of this very dark movie.

@JamesLM2006 you are correct, sir. Carly is an incredible songwriter (won the Academy award for Best Song "Let the River Run" from Working Girl, singer, musician AND is brilliantly talented. Her career spanning 5 decades now is a bonafide testament of this truth! Thank for posting and continue on, soldier!

@jsilence418 Perhaps because she's an incredible singer, composer, etc.? She's brilliantly talented.

Beautiful song, lovely work on vocals and piano, but my God, who decided that a hard edged Stratocaster guitar solo would be a good idea? It completely throws the song and doesn’t belong in there.
@peevmania
@peevmania Жыл бұрын
First, it's not a Stratocaster...and that was Jimmy Webb's idea... I did exactly what he requested me to do...sorry it didnt entertain you.

I agree Suess. I've enjoyed their gifts for so long. I'm so grateful they shared. Two brilliant people singer/songwriters who experienced stage fright.

@jsilence481- Carly wrote the song "Anticipation" while thinking of singer/songwriter Cats Stevens. After the song was a smash hit on the radio, Heinz approached Carly to use the song in their commercial. She didn't write the song as a jingle to be used in a commercial. FYI - Carly has written hundreds of songs.

She did not write the song to be used in a commercial but Heinz did not hold a gun to her head. She cashed in and made even more money. A business deal.

Let see, Carly joined the ranks of some of the best singers to come out of the 60s -80s that performed the title track for James Bond movies - Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran, Nancy Sinatra, Paul McCartney, and Tina Turner. What have u done, lately? Now put that in spy glass and smoke it!

It was great until the guitar entered and ruined it. Someone needed to put a volume control on it.

@@rogerhammer166 Thank you Roger... obviously Jimmy thought it would interesting to do something less "predictable" and I was honored to be of service to these fine artists. The solo was composed by Jimmy and I did my best to play what he wanted with the sound he wanted. I dig it.

Very lovely, but I didn't care for the guitar solo......not to say he wasn't a great guitarist, it just didn't fit the mood of the song, that's all.

I find it typical of trashy Rosie to simply mention that Jimmy Webb is accompanying Simon on this song. Rosie fawns over Carly when the song is finished after quickly saying thanks to Webb. She never acknowledges that Webb is one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century. I know that Webb did not write this song that they sing here but it does prove that Rosie is just a creepy lesbian supremacist.

@squitzy THANK YOU! That’s exactly what I was thinking when Rosie came out and thanked Jimmy Webb as if he were Carly’s accompanist. Hosting a variety/talk show, Rosie should have done a little homework and become the last person on earth to discover that Jimmy Webb has god-like status among singer/songwriters.
