You have Art Garfunkel of Simon & Garfunkel, and George Harrison of the Beatles huddling together at the beginning. This was Carly's breakout hit, the first of many. Her father was the 'Simon' part of Simon & Schuster book publishing, one of the biggest in the world at the time. What makes this performance impressive to me is that Carly was known for having horrible stage fright. She sure pulled it together for this one.

Watch how she doesn’t get close to the microphone. She loved to sing and had the confidence in her vocal power to carry so strong. Stage fright or not, she braved through that to show what she had. The brilliance of her song writing is clear to see.

Carly wrote many beautiful songs. She was special. James Taylor, Carole King, and Carly all broke into the biz at the same time, and they inspired and collaborated with each other a lot. . Their friendship was special, and the three of them added a lot of Magic to the 70's. SO many great songs, Maddy, for you to explore when you are ready. 🙂 Check out Carly's "You're So Vain"...

Back in ancient times, when I was growing up, young people were pressured into conforming to societal standards. "Ladies, you'd better get married and have children when you have the chance or you'll end up a lonely and childless old maid. Do you want that to happen to you?" It was about this time that people, especially ladies with women's liberation, were beginning to challenge those notions. This song captures that awakening. Carly wrote the music for this song. Her frequent collaborator, Jacob Brackman, wrote the lyrics.

Carly is a great songwriter (who plays guitar and piano); she has a good catalog of hits from the early 70s to the late 80s including the theme ("Let the River Run") to the movie "Working Girl" (1988?), as well as singing the award-nominated theme to the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me" from 1977. Two of her biggest hits were "You're So Vain" and "Anticipation".

She had a stammer/stutter as a child but that did not affect her when she sang. So, her mother encouraged her to sing what she wanted to say. Eventually the stammer/stutter went away as a result. She is/was a brilliant singer songwriter.

Thank you for reacting to my all time fave singer songwriters, Ms. Carly Simon. "That's The Way" was her first single off her debut self titled solo album. Oddly enough Carly did not write the lyrics. As she's stated regarding her songwriting process "if I get the melody for a song first, I can't write the lyrics." Carly enlisted the help of her lifelong friend and collaborator, Jacob Brackman to write the words. Knowing Carly and her life, Brackman developed a convincing storyline which Carly embraced. Carly debuted her second album, "Anticipation" only 8 months after the release of her first album and both records were competing against each other on the record charts. For this small feat, Carly was nominated and won the 1971 Grammy for Best New Artist. Like he contemporaries Carole King, and Joni Mitchell, Carly writes from that deep personal space we can all relate too. Excellent reaction❤

I have always thought that this song is about courage. The courage to start a journey with someone you love, and who loves you, in spite of all the failures you have seen in others. You are correct to advise "choose the right person" definitely. But even when you find each other, and choose each other, marriage is not for the faint of heart or the non-courageous. It is a battle you must fight together, a struggle you must both take on together, knowing the rewards of that struggle can be immeasurable. My father cautioned me when I was 17, "True love isn't just staring google-eyed at each other, it is looking out together, in the same direction."

This song came on for the first time as I was flying to New England/ Maine to be exact to get married, how ironic, if I would have listened to the lyrics back then, maybe I would have had a change of heart. but instead I just listened to the music. not heating the warning, and sadly, 12 years later, my ex-wife and I divorced for much of what Carly says in her song, we had three kids, and sadly now almost 50 years later. none of them are in my life, actually two of them had passed, and I have never met most of my adult grandkids. so if possible if you're entertaining doing the same thing because you think that's the way it's supposed to be or the way it should be, how about taking a moment unlike what I didn't do and listen to the words. there's much wisdom in what Carly wrote and sung about.

Hey, Maddie. Carly Simon is a songwriter of very personal music. She is the daughter of the co-founder of book publisher Simon & Schuster. Carly has overcome a few obstacles along the way to earn her place in the world of music. She developed a stutter at 8 years old. Working her way through dyslexia was also challenging. At the peak of her career, Carly pulled back from live concerts after developing stage fright. It sidelined her for a number of years. But she was able to take the stage again many years later. Some of her best songs are, RIGHT THING TO DO, BETTER NOT TELL HER, HAVEN'T GOT TIME FOR THE PAIN, & YOU BELONG TO ME. For most of the 7o's and deep into 8o's, her music was romantic, introspective, reflective, and best listened to by candlelight. Enjoy

Her problems with love weren’t with settling, more her relationships with James Taylor, a huge singing star ( Fire and Rain, check it out) and some Hollywood guys and their painful breaks.
