Explore more Carmen: www.roh.org.uk.... Spanish heat and gypsy passion are brought to the stage in Francesca Zambello's vivid production of Bizet's opera.
Carmen is available to watch now - along with over 60 other extraordinary productions - on Royal Opera House Stream. Watch the whole performance now at www.roh.org.uk...
The Habanera is the aria Carmen sings when she first appears on stage. It is also known as 'L'amour est un oiseau rebelle'.
Carmen was based on a popular novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée, which enticed French readers with exotic tales of Spain. Its heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage and Georges Bizet's opera was a critical failure on its premiere in 1875. Bizet died shortly after, never learning of the spectacular success Carmen would achieve -- it has been staged over 500 times at Covent Garden alone.
Carmen contains many well-loved numbers, such as Carmen's seductive Habanera and Escamillo's rousing Toreador's song, in which he celebrates the thrill of the bullfight. Richly coloured designs capture the sultry heat of the Spanish sun, while ranks of soldiers, crowds of peasants, gypsies and bullfighters bring 19th-century Seville alive. This combination of memorable music, vivid setting and dramatic story have made Carmen one of the most popular operas in the world.

@@keyd4211 Your English grammar and spelling are actually very good. Very well done! 👍 Let me help you out with a couple of things.. The word your looking for is 'Diaphragm' (tough one to spell correctly even for fluent English speakers) but we know what you meant.👌🏽 Also, when you referred to the corset as "breath taking" you were very close and elaborated on it with your next sentence which was also nicely done. But I believe you meant to say "restricts breathing"👍🏼 One more thing, you don't need to use the word "is" after the word "It's" as the word "It's" combines the words "It & is" to create "It's"👍🏼 English is my mother tongue and I had no problem whatsoever understanding you so you did very well!👌🏽👍🏼 Out of curiousity, what is your mother tongue? fun fact, when carmen came out people hated it, they threw everything they could at singers and orchestra because for them it was unacceptable to see character like carmen on scene since every opera before carmen was idealisad version of life and this one wasn't. bizet was shocked with his unsuccessful premiere because he thought that what he made was a masterpiece. so, he changed the whole orchestra and all the singers for the second play, but unfortunately it wasn't any better. he tried that another time and after the third failure he had a heart attack on the way home probably because of the shock and disappointment. so i think that people from the old days wouldn't appreciate carmen's existence in 21st century that much. at least that's what they taught us in school

Yes. I suspect most of us theater-goers prefer classic aesthetic to many today's productions by directors who seemed to have declared war on visual beauty and operas set in time/place the composer intended. The directors don't care though, they have their half-baked "concepts" to show. I guess the crazier they are the more attention they'll get from the press.
@jewelmarkess
@jewelmarkess 5 жыл бұрын
HazyDay - a new piece of art would be a new opera written in styles you mention. I have no problems with that. But what you are talking about is plagiarizing old art and using it for purposes of directors who aren't talented enough to actually create something new. Operas have music and they have words. Words have meaning, and some of us actually understand them. In many cases, these words mention specific time frame. Bizet's Carmen is by Bizet with libretto of Halevy and Meilhac based on a novel by Merimee. What these directors do is throwing the work of librettists and authors out of the window, then writing their own plot which often renders the original words meaningless. Incidentally, I like the Met Carmen in spite of updating even if I consider the updating unnecessary. In most cases, however, the directors just ruin the original work.

She is really theatrical and seems to focus alot on the portrayal of her character... I appreciate that very much coming from a theatre background myself! Doing so she doesn't sound as belcanto as many other opera prima donnas but that rather seems to fit the bohemian character of this opera better actually and above all else it enables her to make the pronunciation and deliverance of the libretto paramount which she absolutely does to a tee! I am able to distinguish most of the words, which I usely have alot of trouble with in opera (and many other genres of music to, to be fair) and my French isn't even that good! On top of that the way she tells the story, both by means of her vocal expression and body language, really helps me to understand the story and what the opera tries to convey and that makes it so much easier to enjoy for me! Also, even at the very beginning of the aria she made quite a dramatic impression on me and I was indeed somewhat abashed at her unawed, taunting and unapologeticly languorous appearance and aura as if I were an easily embarrassed young aristocratic gentleman of quickly disgruntled Victorian parents instead of an emancipated early twenty-something millenial (who has seen quite enough liberal sexual images and originals through modern media to not be shocked easily) raised by parents who themselves came of age during the height of the sexual revolution. It must've been something in her personality and portrayal itself that envoked the association of something dangerously rebellious in me... long story short: I am impressed by her. Chapeau!

(( here are the lyrics both french and english)) L’amour est un oiseau rebelle Que nul ne peut apprivoiser, Et c’est bien in vain qu’on l’appelle S’il lui convient de refuser. Rien n’y fait, menace ou prière. L’un parle bien, l’autre se tait. Et c’est l’autre que je préfère. Il n’a rien dit mais il me plait. L’amour! L’amour! L’amour! L’amour! English Translation of Habanera Love is a rebellious bird that nobody can tame, and you call him quite in vain if it suits him not to come. Nothing helps, neither threat nor prayer. One man talks well, the other's mum; it's the other one that I prefer. He's silent but I like his looks. Love! Love! Love! Love! Love is a gypsy's child, it has never, ever, known a law; love me not, then I love you; if I love you, you'd best beware! etc. The bird you thought you had caught beat its wings and flew away ... love stays away, you wait and wait; when least expected, there it is! All around you, swift, so swift, it comes, it goes, and then returns ... you think you hold it fast, it flees you think you're free, it holds you fast. Love! Love! Love! Love! Metal already does that very well. Some people find it hard to understand, and it is even harder to explain it to them. Negative music helps take negative energy away. An example would be that you are just PISSED at something, would you put on a very positive song then start having more positive energies yourself? Or would you just get a little more angry at the song? I personally would get more angry at the song, of course others will have different reactions.

Opera singers don't belt. Different technique. I know, you probably just meant singing, so just FYI.
@jewelmarkess
@jewelmarkess 4 жыл бұрын
@MEanME In a sense. They use their chest voice for lower notes and head voice for higher notes (pop singers mostly use their chest voice and use falsetto for very high notes, but falsetto creates a breathier sound, not suitable for classical singing), and they work on eliminating the break between registers, blending them which of course only works with right voices. Classical singing requires both the right voices and years of training. Additionally, while pop singers rely on microphones, opera/classical singers are trained to project the sound so that it is heard over the orchestra. They use a low larynx technique which allows them to use the open areas - cavities - in their head to create resonance enabling their voices to carry over the orchestra. This gives more information: vocalprocess.co.uk/what-is-belting/
@jewelmarkess
@jewelmarkess 4 жыл бұрын
@MEanME (to add to my previous comment re: corsets) - I read they don't put it on too tight. They also inhale when it's tightened so that they can breathe normally. Some singers actually prefer it as it gives them extra support.
