I like your version, but hear me out on this one... what if... Escamillo feels that Carmen is in danger, and he **rides** the bull to intercept Don Jose, and then he is all "You wanna fight? Fight me!" but he is riding a bull! so he is looking down on Don Jose making him look like a lesser man and the coward he really is!
