That's what I was thinking, really hard to tell from watching a video and Scotty knows the car best of course, but it kinda seemed it might be more like G-force related than vapor lock - but then he said it was stalling out right after the burnout so maybe not. Dyno of course won't pick up such issues as no G-forces.

You're onto it Scotty, its heat soak & vapor lock, but it's not flooding, its lean. A nylon inch spacer block should solve the problem.....insulating the fuel hose from pump to carb can never be a bad thing either.....good luck man

If it was that lean it would backfire
@gassit137 Жыл бұрын
@@STREETMACHINETV Nah, it would if it was drowning itself, the manifold would be full of fuel & that would cause a backfire, also it would be huffing a cloud of black smoke from the exhaust as it cleared. I think what's happening is the heat in engine bay/carb/manifold/fuel lines is actually evaporating the fuel & pump is struggling to keep bowls full, it actually running out of fuel, that's again why it lays over again in top gear at 1000ft. You will be surprised how much heat the nylon spacer will keep out of the carb...it will increase plenum volume which is a good thing too..

Ack in the early 90’s my older brother ran a 318 in a vk charger, bored and stroked with as I can remember the works with cam, solid yellow terra roller rockers, edlbrock high rises manifold and not sure of the extractors. I know he had a high volume oil pump and a 750 Holley 4 barrel double pumper from memory. It would run around a low to flat 12’s. Although a few years later after blowing the 318 due to lack of oil pressure, he did somehow buy a 265 hemi that was from an ex chaser numbers matching. I can’t remember the work he did on this 6 but he ended up using another 4 barrel Holley, not sure the size but it also ran in the low 12’s. Either engine never blew a diff or gear box. He had a bougwarner I’d that’s how it’s spelt. With a shift kit. It was nice and on the back of the chargers you could comfortably fit a 60/265 and 50/245 and looked slick. My fav car shape of all time even tho I loved the dukes charger. The Aussie charger was light in the rear end tho due to it being short and the front significant longer

I would say it’s a fuel delivery issue that may include heat, it dies after the burnout so it’s not G forces, it could potentially be an issue with the needle and seat sticking when heat gets into the carb body.

scotty i had a v8 that would foul the plugs and start playing up , it would run fantastic for a while with new plugs and then go to crap. had to reduce the power valve size and adjust the size of the main jet to get it to behave and stop bogging and flooding. maybe look at the plugs and see if they still look good. it can be very a annoying problem to get sorted out, the carby that you are using is different from what i had , hopefully it won't annoy you to much getting it fixed . you might have to put it on a rolling dino so you can see what the air fuel is doing at different revs under load just to get the carby setup sorted.

Hi Scotty, i would like to share what solved my avs carb bogging problem. Firstly i moved the acc pump lever to the bottom hole , its the leanest. This improved things slightly. Then i adjusted the secondary trap door. Prob not called that, but the top butterfly thing. There is a torx bit lock nut you need to loosen whilst using a flat screwdriver to hold the spring pressure on the trap door. By loosing this you allow more air into the carb earlier. There is no secondary acc pump, this is how you adjust the secondary tip in. I used a afr gauge to set it , just back it off a 1/4 turn at a time. I had exactly the same prob you are having. Good luck mate, thanks for the content throught the year. Reach out if you still have problems. George

Not sure it is heat soak Scotty. A carb should not be doing that just from heat soak alone. Yes, heat soak can affect it, but not that much. Phenolic spacer wont hurt so worth a shot, but reckon its carb (float?) or fuel delivery set-up related. Could even be fuel surge? - rig up a fuel pressure gauge to measure at launch
@STREETMACHINETV Жыл бұрын
It's possible that it could be something else but given that the basic combo is unchanged and this is the first time it's hard to sit in really long staging lanes, I think heat has something to do with it.
@DodgyBrothersEngineering Жыл бұрын
I don't think it is heat related in the slightest. It has all the hallmarks of float level that is too high, or something stuck. It is clearly after a big rev bogging down, like the fuel bowl is getting over full. Think I would be looking over the fuel system before I did anything.
@JossRickard Жыл бұрын
Hey mate, seems like it's fuel coming through the vent tube and dumping into the carb. Lower the float level a tad and see if it makes a difference. The extra grip from the burnout is probably giving you a hard enough launch for some good old fuel slosh

Had a similar problem myself, it turned out to be the float sinking under acceleration.

I hate to admit this but on my mild 318 running an edelbrock carb,I also had many issues with bog in mine also. Mine was also the AVS style carb. I should have bought the performer model instead. My mate had lots of bog issues with his 650 edelbrock. He got sick of it and changed over to Holley. It seems to be that edelbrock carbs just don’t like extreme driving,heavy throttle stuff whereas Holley are more at home on drag strips! I’ve stuck with my edelbrock but for the most part mines just a street driver so it behaves okay. I changed my diff ratio to 3:55 and this helped the bog situation quite a bit.

I was scrolling through the comments looking for a comment like this. This is way more likely than heat soak or flooding. From my experience, I would say Scotty has a lean issue. Not a rich mixture. Rich mixture rarely cause misfires, and I saw no black smoke when he was taking off. How can you blame heat soak and flooding at the same time? They seem like they would cause opposite issues to me. I would be looking at , fuel filter, tank pick up for blockages and float level is high enough. I don’t know edelbrocks very well, but could the secondary’s be opening to soon and causing the bogging(ie lean out)??
@vigilante351 Жыл бұрын
Seems like a carb / fuel delivery issue. Have to see what the pressure is at the carb, and if the accel pump is doing its job, cos its also not liking top end fuel delivery from the sounds of it??

What carby have you got running on it Scotty? I had a vh commodore with a 355 stroker. It also had a 750 Holley but use to pre ignite when turning it off. So I swapped for a Rochester which was a massive mistake because we could never figure out the right needle size and it use to bog down off the line but it was like it hit a power band after that which is like what’s happening here. I went back to the big Holley and had instant power the whole way through and I ended up installing a tap under the drivers door and I’d turn it off and let the car run out of fuel so no more pre ignition. Btw, did you see Leroy run early our time this morning? I’ve noticed you commenting there lately but he dropped it about 2am our time

What you need to do is ditch the 318 and fit a short-stroked alloy big block with EFI ITBs and long-runner tuned length extractors that revs to 8000+ rpm. 650+ wheel horsepower and the sound of the gods echoing across Victoria. A World Industries (Bill Mitchell) hemi alloy block in 4.490 inch bore with a SCAT 4340 3.75 inch stroke crank will displace 475 cubic inches. You'd need good quality lightweight forged chromoly rods to rev it that hard with any reliability but there are plenty of RB and 2JZ stroker engines with 94mm stroke lengths being revved to 10,000 at the strip without grenading, so 8,000 should be possible in this case with a good balance job on the rotating assembly. Of course, I'm talking about $15k minimum before you've even slotted a cam into the short block at this point, so this motor would end up being worth more than all the cars in the Carnage fleet put together, but holy FUCK imagine the noise!
