There's two valves on the end of the linkage, throttle pressure is the first one you can feel then it gets stiffer when it gets to the kickdown valve. That is adjustable & should be set about 1/8" wider than the factory setting tool. The linkage is Z shaped & can be shortened or lengthened by tweaking the bends so you don't have to cut the end. Oil & line pressure checks might be a good idea too since governor pressure overrides throttle pressure to make it upshift.

@ChrisHallett83 There's a S.A company called 4WD Systems that do a great mech locker (better than a good ol' Detroit Locker IOM) for a really reasonable price that has a life time warranty. Some muppet that runs a diff n trans shop just off High st in Epping ignored the instructions of preloading and mine destroyed itself in about a year. 4WD Systems got me to send them the whole carrier, went through it and replaced it free of charge even though it was installed incorrectly (which I knew cause the dickhead told me he lost the paperwork and was going to wing it and preload it like a VL LSD and ignored my suggestion to get in touch with the company and ask them about preloads) Your a muppet Sam, you should be out of business. Don't even get me started on the $7500 built Trimatic that blew up 5 times in the first month until I got sick of his attitude about paying tow truck bills- so I did the best thing I ever did and went and saw Andrew at Preston Autos. Best customer service in the bizz- any time I've had any kind of issue (it gets raced hard now the trans is reliable) he's straight on to it and has refused to take my money more times than I care to remember. There's plenty more thread on the rod but yeah it was bottoming out inside the turnbuckle (to use your expression). So I was try to move the turnbuckle further back but unfortunately it got to the point where the angle of the kickdown rod changed and started to bind up and the throttle started to stick. A couple of questions. Did you use an oxygen sensor on the dyno so you knew what was happening with the air/fuel mixture? Why didn't you just disconnect the kickdown rod at the track if you were going to manual shift anyway? I'd like to see the flowbench on old vs new heads. In'78 they were really strangling engines to meet emissions so there is plenty in there to be released! I think it's great you are showing just what's happening, warts and all.
@STREETMACHINETV
@STREETMACHINETV 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can see the air/fuel line on the dyno graph. You can't just disconnect the kickdown, it sets all the pressure within the trans. Running without it will kill the trans straight away

Is there an adjustment on the carby linkage? The shorter you make the kick down the more open the throttle is. you need a shorter throw on the linkage itself. It's also probably worth putting some pressure gauges on the box to see what line pressures it is running.

Lets not forget that’s at the tire not at the crank and even as he said it’s an old motor home engine ... that means 8.5 to 1 compression at most ... a really crappy on horsepower but decent on torque cam it’s not gonna make big horsepower on those specs by any means .... now if the compression was up around 10.5 to 1 and a better cam and 850 cfm Holley carb it would be a whole other animal .... just remember at the tire your always 25-30 percent lower on hp and torque than at the flywheel sometimes even more because of rear gears or too small or too big a tire
