When I think of what a "butterfly warrior" would be, I imagine something along the lines of a ninja crossed with a nihang sikh warrior; they would wear long flowing clothes, silk and ribbons, with colours and patterns to denote their school. But underneath their clothing, in the folds and hidden pockets of their attire they could hide all manner of barbs, blades, swords and knives, which they could easily access to attack their opponent. The garb could also function as a type of defensive item; by quickly moving around in their light clothes they could provide a huge area for the opponent to aim at but not have any clue where their body is within the fabric, or by launching strands of fabric at opponents to distract them (or even have strands of fabric with weights or knives at the end, like a rope dart).

Well butterflies are fragile and beautiful, so maybe a butterfly warrior would be somewhat of a glass cannon. Lots of blade flourishing and flashy attacks. Perhaps they would be the warrior servants of high class nobles or kings. Have gold and jewel encrusted armor and weapons, but it would be fashion over function. Large ornate golden swords that are quite fragile, but very sharp.

I really love these system agnostic vids. For a butterfly warrior, I imagine an elite female dancer with a chinese style longsword. Like Xianghua, from soul calibur. Delicate, but dextrous and decisive. War isn't her main trade... but she wages it like an assassin. Her goal, always... is to destroy the enemy commander and end whatever war she finds herself in. I see a butterfly warrior as a royal diplomat, a performer, or as a band of recluse monks.

One of my favorite characters I've ever played was a drunken nobleman duelist, that whole campaign was amazing. (It's also canon that in my DM's homebrew setting, my character and my best friends invented the concept of a fist bump, which I am proud of.)

When I think butterflies, it reminds me of a certain type which uses the patterns on the underside of its wings to intimidate/hypnotise/distract predators. Maybe incorporating illusion/enchant magic into the clothing or weapons they wear?

In many settings, trial by combat is the final arbiter of manners of honour and law. Legend of the Five Rings, based loosely on Feudal Japan, uses Iaijutsu duels for such a purpose, so having (or being) a skilled duellist is quite useful in the court intrigues.

Berserkers, historically were not crazy, mindless warriors. They were champions. In old Norse Sagas and other texts it was often mentioned that a Yarl had a personal "Bear Sark" who wore a bear shin, hence the name, and fought challenges for the Yarl.
@marvalice34554 жыл бұрын
They were champions in the court, but the ideas was they could channel the animal ferocity _specifically in battle_ Of course we have almost no written record of prechristian scandanavian culture that isn't extremely biased, so this is all educated guessing anyway.

Obviously the butterfly warrior is part of an elite order of warriors. As part of their training they bulk up as much as possible then, when the time is right, they enter state known as the "Battle Crystolis". In this state they are a neigh unstoppable fighter as their body burns through itself eventually reaching a sort of bloody enlightenment. After this they are permanently changed. A post chrysalis butterfly warrior is an expert in most weapons and able to easily predict their opponents moves, but their body ages considerably faster than a regular human, and they aren't as physically strong.

Historically speaking (I think, not sure), duelists weren't so much entertainers, so much as people you could pay to duel on your behalf. Some noble challenges you to a duel to the death? Unless dueling is a thing they are specifically known for, you're not fighting them, but the guy they hired. In a medieval justice system? Trial by combat says this guy is your lawyer. That kind of thing.
@krkngd-wn6xj9 ай бұрын
This is the part of duelists that is very underrepresented in fantasy, but would work so well in my opinion. It gives you an instant hook for being a travelling adventurer, a reason for powerful people to know about, and want to hire the PC, and instant moral conflict to add to any jobs. (Like protecting someone on trial by combat who you know is evil and guilty, but if you lose you die/get injured, and never get hired again)

In combat, I see Butterfly Warriors as the ultimate glass cannons. They’re fast and can strike you 27 times in the blink of an eye, but they have the defenses of paper. They can also probably do some plant magic as well. Out of combat? I probably see them as nomads.

Regarding Butterfly warriors. You have a manga and now an anime called Demon Slayer. One of the most powerful Demon Slayers in this series is basically what you would call a Butterfly Warrior: kimetsu-no-yaiba.fandom.com/wiki/Shinobu_Kocho

Well...to me Inigo Montoya is the most iconic duelist. I love the trope as a whole, I think, too many of my NPCs in my Rogue Trader campaign seem to be dual-wielding pistols types and my Inquisitor character, Azakir Halgriv is also a swordsman Blood Knight who enjoys fighting a worthy opponent way too much. I think that 'duelist' part is better as a part of their character rather than the whole if you catch my drift.

I don't really think of Gladiators as being the "Bards of the fighting world". I generally think of highly competitive fights, possibly involving slaves, possibly to the death, most often in an arena, but definitely for the entertainment of the masses. But that entertainment is measured in the amount of spilled blood and not necessarily in the quality of the theatrical performance.

@krkngd-wn6xj9 ай бұрын
I know this is not exactly what this video is about, but your point on the showmanship flaw of the gladiator got me thinking about a mechanical representation for this. How about special moves the gladiator has drilled extensively. Stuff like executions, or humiliating disarms, powerful effects compared to other warrior classes. The drawback is that they are hard to set up, and require the gladiator to put themselves in danger. E.g. you have a very nice disarm move, where you take the opponent's weapon, but you have to spend a turn without your weapon, just dodging shots to be able to use it. Kind of a higher risk higher reward version of the Battlemaster archetype.

Gladiators were entertainers rather like todays wrestlers. They did know how to handle weapon but the fights were usually scripted for entertainment. You can clearly see that by the fact that they would build entire lakes inside colosseum and stage ship battles there. Gladiators were also not really slaves, it was a real career choice you could take. So by this you could say that Gladiator character could be someone who is as good in combat as they're good in acting. So instead of usual str/dex/con you go str/con/cha

There's no such thing as fighting multiple people at once. If it looks like someone is fighting multiple people at once, what's really happening is a series of hyper-quick 1-on-1 engagements. An actual fight vs multiple people at once will quickly end in defeat as they are overwhelmed.
