A saraswati veena performance of Kapi, live in London, showcasing the raga’s devotional mood and unique phrasings, enabled by the presence of two distinct ni swaras.

Jayanthi Kumaresh’s saraswati veena is an ancient instrument, named after the Hindu goddess of arts and learning. But her gently electrified version produces a strikingly guitaristic tone, igniting Carnatic classical melodies with sweeping bends. She started playing aged three, and learned under her mother Lalgudi Rajalakshmi, before leaving home aged 13 to study with her aunt Padmavathy Ananthagopalan. She also received instruction from her great-uncle, violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman, and noted veenai S Balachander.
A few years later she became one of the youngest artists to receive an All India Radio ‘A’ grading, earned a doctorate in veena history, and founded the Indian National Orchestra, uniting musicians from India’s classical traditions in a large ensemble. On recent recordings she has experimented with recording seven layers of veena on top of each other, and continues to write for dance and film. Listen to Jayanthi here:

Kapi is a popular Carnatic ragam, associated with slow tempos and a certain devotional sadness.
It is and audav-vakra sampoorna rāga, ascending with five notes [SR₂M₁PN₃S] and descending with seven in a meandering order [SN₂D₂N₂PM₁G₂R₂S]. Much of the distinctive sound comes from the presence of two distinct ni swaras. The mood can also be coloured by adding a light touch of shuddha dha [D₁]. It is similar to Hindustani Raag Piloo.

I strongly urged ALL production companies intending to shoot a carnatic concert to use this show as a template. It gives me esteem pleasure to utter the Director's name Nirmal Singh. The number of cameras used and placement of it were not futile. The cam operators wow, I suspect must have some music background know exactly when to pan and tilt or is it Nirmal feeding directions in operators earphones. During finale, keeping the 2 shot is so crucial in capturing the wordless communication between veena and mrdingam. The editing splendid and expertly paced. Sharp sound clariry. Thank you sound guys..adhering to simple sound fundamentals and common sense. My only suggestion is to have a camera dedicated to the audience. We, the viewers, can transpose the audiences enjoyment onto ourselves...the mystique of it all. I cannot tell you how much suffering and frustration I experienced sitting thru unmotivated and thoughtless concert programs. Now millions have watched this video and that's because of the professional technicians behind the scenes invisible hands. Lastly, no missteps here to disregard the supreme artists. The others here are already doing it and that's why we are all here

Tamil Pan is the recorded earliest music in India. Silapathigaram, authored by Ilango Adigal around 500CE (1500 years ago) gives a perfect description about Classical Music. Is it not amazing that somebody in the Tamizh land defined all these as early as the 5th century? In just one verse, he gives the names of the seven swaras as per Tamizh PaN. குரலே, துத்தம், கைக்கிளை, உழையே இளியே, விளரி, தாரம் என்றிவை எழுவகை இசைக்கும் (Swaptha Swaram) எய்தும் பெயரே சவ்வும் (Sa) ரிவ்வும் (Ri) கவ்வும் (Ka) மவ்வும் (Ma) பவ்வும் (Pa) தவ்வும் (Tha) நிவ்வும் (Ni) என்றிவை ஏழும் அவற்றின் எழுத்தே ஆகும் Sa-Kural; Ri-Thuththam;Ga-KaikkiLai;Ma-Uzhai;Pa-ILi;Dha-ViLari;Ni- Tharam. In another verse, he says PaNs(Ragams) are obtained by arranging the 12 Kovais(swaras) in a specified structure in the ascending and descending scale. Sa-Kural; Ri-Thuththam;Ga-KaikkiLai;Ma-Uzhai;Pa-ILi;Dha-ViLari;Ni- Tharam.
