Carnevil Tutorial : How I was able to get this Classic Midway Game to work on MAME.

CarnEvil Tutorial: CarnEvil was one of the first Light Gun games out there. It was released by Midway on October 31st, 1998. I like many others have literally spent hours trying to get this game to work with MAME and have continually fallen down the rabbit hole, finding no end. I had reached out to other youtubers that had videos about CarnEvil, but for some reason they were less than willing to help. So after many more hours of trial and error.....I had a breakthrough!!!! I finally was able to get CarnEvil to work with a version of Mame. I have created this video so that anyone else that is out there and has been as frustrated as I will no longer have to wait. I hope this tutorial finds all of you die hard retro fans well and if you have any questions just shoot me a comment.

**4-40-22 UPDATE: I am finding that since the MAME Version used in the tutorial is an older version, some people who have newer computers with updated systems like Windows 11 are not able to get the game to work. (Version0179b_64bit must be too antiquated) Unfortunately, using my method seems to only work on older systems. I've only run into a couple people who have had this issue, but if your running into problems this could be your answer. If you have an older system test it on that. Thanks**

• CarnEvil: How to Calib...
1ST - Go into advanced options and under input options check mouse and uncheck the joystick.
2ND - You have to calibrate the mouse.
When you start the game the screen with "CarnEvil 1.0.3" appears, press F2
This will take you to the Diagnostic Screen.
Navigate using + (up) and - (down)
Highlight : GUN CALIBRATION and press ( F2)
Here you can calibrate the left (green) gun (ie: the mouse)
Follow the directions to get the mouse calibrated as a light gun (The screen will have you move the crosshair to an “X” in the top left corner, once on it fire(in the case of your mouse the right mouse button is your fire button) then the “X” will appear in the lower right corner. Place your crosshair on it and fire/click again. Finally it will have you fire at the center of the screen.
It will default to the right gun, press G three times to go back to the menu.
***If the right light gun calibration does not recognize the “G” key you will have to do the following:
Press Tab: Press Input this Machine: Scroll to P2 - Button 1: Press Enter: Press G: Press Tab to exit***
Now Press “G” 3 times, the menu will reappear, scroll to exit and press F2
Last - You can assign buttons to your own preference by pressing TAB
Scroll to : Input (This Machine) (Assign button by pressing Enter on the field and then hitting the key you want to assign on the keyboard)
Important Keys to assign:
P1 button 1 - right mouse button (this is your fire button)
P1 button 2 - left mouse button (this is your reload)
1 Player Start - 1
Coin 1 - 5

For anyone having trouble getting the mouse to move/shoot this is what you have to do. Go into advanced options and under input options check mouse and uncheck the joystick. Then you have to calibrate the mouse by starting the game and at the "CarnEvil 1.0.3" whatever screen, press F2 and it will take you to the Diagnostic Screen. Navigate using - and =. Here you can calibrate the left gun by highlighting GUN CALIBRATION and pressing F2. Follow the directions, then when it wants to calibrate the right gun, press A three times to go back to the menu. Then simply go down to EXIT, press 9, and you're all set! Also, don't forget to assign buttons for coin insert and start in MAME settings.

have wondered how to get this game going - no wonder - great guide - got this to work with both my wii lightgun - for those wondering why aiming might be off - the key i found is make sure you go into the service menu (f2 by default) and then use the + and - keys to navigate - goto gun calibration and follow instructions - i turned on freeplay as well - works a bloody treat and straight into launchbox it goes! thanks again

I've been a Mame user for quite a few years now, and I noticed this game not long after I started using the program. I've wanted to play it ever since, and have dedicated a good amount of time and effort into making it happen. All my efforts were feeble, however, and I never got to experience it though I tried and tried. @@Vincent_Serpico Yeah I don't normally make videos, but if i'd have figured this one out I might've made my first one for the very same reason you did. There's something I wanted to let you know about too. On the mame version I've been using..I was having a strange problem using the mouse as a lightgun on Crypt Killer. The crosshairs would follow the mouse perfectly around the screen, but when you moved it to the left of center and pressed fire..it would fire the shot an equal distance to the RIGHT of center. The effect was the same when I moved the mouse to the right. Up and down didn't have that problem though. What was pushing the dagger even deeper for me was that I wasn't able to use my mouse buttons to fire with. Well I decided to try the game out using this mame version, and I now have 2 games that are running as smooth as can be! You never know just how far an idea might branch out for the next guy when you pass along helpful advice. I hope you have the best of luck in everything you do man.

@gregc.9035 I have found that the game is finicky from system to system and sometimes takes tweaking by the user. Many of the questions I receive about something not working on one system works for others.

@@dirkdex Glad it is working well for you. I do not know of any wireless light guns that work well. I know ULTIMARC AimTrak Light Gun works well with no delay, but it is wired. As for as any other CHD games, I will have to let you know. I really liked this game and worked forever to find the right combo of emulator, rom, chd, and file placement to get it to work. Wow I've had this running since about 2013. I didn't even know it was supposed to be hard. Maybe I got lucky because it was old and i've never bothered updating it. I think the hardest thing for me from memory was just finding the CHD and getting it to not drop frames on my old PC.

My game would crash all the time when trying to boot up carnevil. I used my other version of MAME(0.196)to see if it would work and it did! Another TIP is to go to your options menu then "Device Mapping" and change the light gun settings to MOUSE, this way you don't have to uncheck joystick. Hope this helps anyone. Thanks for the video, been trying to play this game forever!! I also used firefox to download all files, just make sure that it downloads as a zip file and the other .CHD file.

You had to use that older version of MAME (from 2016) bc you had old roms/chds. If you have a current set of roms/chds, you can use the newest version of MAME.

To answer your question, no, I have not used this version of mama for other games, I use it as a stand alone to play Carnevil. However, having said that there should be no reason why other games would not work on it. Just make sure you have the correct rom version. Let me know if I can help you with anything else. Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, laptops tend not to have the fastest processors or graphics card. I recommend trying it on a desktop if you can and see if the buffering stops. If you continue to have that problem, let me know and I will try to trouble shoot for you. Enjoy!!!

I have a question, though my process is not for CarnEvil: can you put in all the necessary game files inside the .zip? Or does this affect the performance of the emulation? For context, I got The House of the Dead 3 working on MAME, but the performance is ridiculously slow, even while having good specs.

Unfortunately, the only way I was able to get carnevil to work was through the process I describe. Although ,I cant say I have ever tried putting all in the zip file. I dont think that will increase performance and honesty knowing what i know about Roms, adding any files that aren't originally with the files may cause it not to work at all. However, if you try it out and it works well, please let me know. I have house of the dead, but had it working on another emulator. I had the same issues with poor performance with Mame.

Well I was hoping this would work. Unfortunately, I just get the screen flash and then back out. Won't load the game. My batocera>share>roms>mame folder has a carnevil folder with the carnevil.chd file in it. Then I have in the same batocera>share>roms>mame folder a carnevil.zip that has the boot.u32 and the sound102.u95. This has made no difference.

Unfortunately, even though CarnEvil is an older retro game it takes a lot of processing and the average handheld does not have it. Also, I have experimented on a raspberry pi system, but have yet to find an emulator that can run the game successfully. It actually took me quite a while to get the right combination in order to get the game to work on a full size desktop. So unfortunately at this point the answer is probably no, although I can't say that I have tried it on one of those. Sorry

Sorry to hear your having trouble with it. Let me see if I can help you out so it will work. Did you download the files from my site? Also, make sure all your files are named the same. (ie: rom, chd, and folder must be named the same (carnevil.zip, carnevil.chd, folder carnevil). Also, make sure all extensions are lower case. Mame does not like capitals for extentions.(ie: rom is carnevil.zip, not carnevil.ZIP, or carnevil.chd, not carnevil.CHD), Lastly, make sure the rom stays zipped and is put into the rom folder that way. Let me know if this helps. If not I'll try to trouble shoot some more for you.

@@MrBlueHand When you open your ROM folder, place the zipped rom (carnevil.zip), that zipped rom should contain 2 files, there is no reason to ever unzip the rom. If for some reason, when you downloaded, the rom from my site it automatically unzipped it, it needs to be re-zipped. Next create a folder inside the rom folder, name the new folder carnevil,(just like the rom). Place your chd file into this new folder, make sure the chd file is named carnevil, just like the rom. That should do it. Again, make sure all extensions are in lower case.

So are you using a mouse to aim and shoot? Or a lightgun? If it is running slow, your computer may not have a fast enough processor and/or graphics card. This can cause problems with game play. However, if you did not set up the mouse with the appropriate settings for your fire button this a lot of the time can be the problem. I have another tutorial on using the mouse as a lightgun and button assignment that should show you what needs to be done. Let me know, if this is not what your problem is and I will try to do some more trouble shooting for you.

@@glndlbro83 sounds like you may need to calibrate the mouse reticle, if you are aiming and hearing the shoot but not seeing damage, that probably means the shots are off the play area. Recalibrate the mouse using my instructions in the description or the other video and see if that does not correct your issue.

Check the extension of the chd file you downloaded. I have discovered recently that some browsers convert it into our FLAC file for some reason. Firefox does this for some reason, it is best to use chrome. If that is not the issue. Make sure that all your file extensions are in lower case. MAME for some reason does not function with file extensions that are in caps. Let me know if this was one of the issues. If not I'll try to help you figure out what is going wrong.

Did you download the correct version of Mame? Generally, I have found that if you have downloaded the CHD Files and the Rom from the link that I provided and followed the instructions, then generally when someone has a problem it is because they are trying to run it on the wrong version. This only works on the Mame version I have listed. Let me know if this is the case, if not let me know and I will try to problem solve for you.

Also, you have checked all extensions to make sure they are lower case and the rom, folder, and chd are all named carnevil. No spaces or extra anything or it will not work. So with all the above completed, you are still getting a chd not found message?

@@wednesdaycrow OK, let me see if I can do some troubleshooting. Did you use all my links to get the files?(ie: ROM an CHD)? Make sure that the version of Mame I have linked has not changed. That link is for an outside site. If they changed it to a newer version for some reason, I did not know. If so, is your computer system older? Make sure all the file names match and that all the extensions are in lower case. MAME does not like CAPS for their file extensions. Make sure your file folder holding your CHD files match your ROM name. They cannot be different. Make sure the ROM is in zip form, you do not need to unzip it and place those files in separately. Check these points and let me know if any of it helped. Otherwise, we can talk some more, I have not had anyone that could not get this to work. Generally, its just a simple overlooked step. @scaryhymen Unfortunately, your computer is a bit older, I looked up the specs and if I'm right your processor only runs at 2.7ghz which may be the reason that the game plays, but is slow. This game although older does need some processor speed to run smoothly.

Well, let me see if I can do some trouble shooting for you. Generally if you get that error it means either the rom or chd is in the wrong place. Recheck your file placement, also make sure all files are named the same, and that the extensions are in lower case.

@@Vincent_Serpico Hello! So mame actually crashes if I go into the options menu and change anything, save configuration, and try to return to the "home screen". So, it's not crashing *just* when I try to start carnevil, although it does crash then, too. I think it might have something to do with my audio sample rate being set to 48khz while my computer and preamp are set to 41khz, but every time I try to adjust the MAME audio from 48khz to 41khz and return to menu, it crashes. I've also tried the latest version of MAME but that also crashes any time I try to return to the home screen after changing any settings. I've been told if I run MAME in cmd I could get the exact error message which would help a lot, but I am not sure how to run in cmd? I used the latest version of google chrome to download all the files from your site.

@@gerardoodore4757 The 1st issue is that this version of MAME works with a 64bit system not a 32 bit, 2nd your version of windows is pretty outdated, I have not tried to get it to work with windows 7. You may want to upgrade to a 64bit system and to at least windows 10. Sorry, but the program needs a higher processer than you have.

@@shm-62u30 oh...sorry probably should have asked that first. Unfortunately, no...the older mame version does not seem to work with it. I have not had a chance to experiment with newer Mame versions. As I said in the video it took me a long time to find the right combination of rom,chd, and compatible mame version that would run the game properly and at the time I was running windows 10. I have had a few people tell me that they were able to get it to work with newer versions of mame. However, I have found that since the game is older that it tends to work better on the older versions and older version of Windows.

No, it should not be that way at all. Unless you have a really older system and/or a very basic graphics card. I'd be happy to try and troubleshoot for you. Is your system newer or older? I have found ironically that brand new superfast computers cant run this version of MAME because it is an older version.

@@TheKingofgames86 I have not had issues with the audio in the past and others that have had issues getting it to work did not report to me that the audio was off. However, this game is temperamental. It took a lot of trial and error to find a combination that worked for me. Since the game is older you may have to try an older version of mame rather than the latest version, but obviously not older than the one I have it working on. Try going back about 5 past versions of mame and work your way up. See if the audio works on an older version, if not and the game works, but audio is still an issue, we may have to check your audio settings.

I have a few followers that have given me some information on how to get it to work on Windows 11, I'm planning on putting up a tutorial on how to get it to work on Windows 11 soon, I'll try to send you some directions a little later on.

@@Vincent_Serpico I just got it working just now. Thanks to some of the comments. I appreciate your work. This game brought back fun memories for me of the 90s when this came out. It's a real treat to play it again. I was able to play it using the version of mame reccomended in the comments section, and also needed to download one additional file as you likely are aware not included on your web page or tutorial.

@scorpiux123 there is a sound adjustment in mame, you may need to adjust for your computer if it is not set correctly.
