Same vehicle. They just had more flavors across the pond. "...(1970-1977)... Priced at $2,300 at the time of its launch, the Capri was marketed as an economical sporty coupe (with no upscale trim levels unlike its European market variants e.g. the GT, RS, L, XL, and XLR which were trim levels), far smaller than the Mercury Cougar and Montego.[2] In its adaptation to the American market, the Capri saw several minor revisions, with the two rectangular headlights of the Ford Capri replaced by four circular headlamps (shared with some upscale Capri models sold for the European market eg the RS or GT - the rectangular lighting did not meet FMVSS 108), grille-mounted turn signals, and side marker lights; Rostyle wheels were fitted as standard equipment. While produced in Germany as a variant of the Ford Cortina, the Capri adopted powertrain commonality with the newly introduced Ford Pinto. Originally powered by a 1.6L Kent "crossflow" inline-four, the Capri received a 2.0L "OHC" inline-4 for 1971. As an option, for 1972, Mercury introduced a 2.6L Cologne V6, becoming the first American-market vehicle marketed by Ford Motor Company with a V6 engine. For 1974, the V6 was enlarged to 2.8L, as Ford revised castings for both the engine block and cylinder heads..."

That's the 'XA' Falcon, the model that Mad Max's car was based on. Aussie cars at the time used letters to designate a series of a particular car, like the 'VH' Valiant Charger, but that series wasn't necessarily just a single year the way we would say, "I own a '69 Dodge Charger." Does that kinda make sense?

8:30 The Ford Capri was available in the US as the Mercury Capri... The Mercury Capri was three distinctly different vehicles sold in the US. Sold in the US as the Mercury Capri from model years 71 to 78 (no Capris were imported for model year 1975, but was sold early in 1975 as a 1976 MkII model) and sold in Europe as the Ford Capri as model years 69-86 and in Britain until 1988. The US model was built by Ford of Europe in Cologne, West Germany and brought in as a captive import. It did receive a facelift redesign in 1974 changing the model code from MkI to MkII hence why it's referred to as the Capri II. The MkI was a coupe/fastback (trunk) while the MkII was a hatchback making use of the rear storage area much more accessable. The US never got the V4, but it was the first American-market vehicle marketed by Ford Motor Company with a V6 engine. Neither Europe or the US got a V8 sold as either Ford or Mercury respectively. The 302ci V8 'Capri' was built by Basil Green Motors a kind-of in-house tuner for Ford and calling it the Capri Perana; a deliberate misspelling of Piranha as this was already protected. It was built in Johannesburg, South Africa, but technically the Capri Perana was a mix of the Australian Ford Falcon (XE) and the American Ford Mustang on a Capri (MkI) body. It was sold with a 4 speed Toploader and the 3 speed C4 automatic. It was built from 69-73 (MkI) but only 500-550 units were produced. Confused yet? It gets worse. The US market adopted the Fox body of the Ford Mustang and rebadged it as a Mercury Capri from 1979 until 1986 when the Capri took a five year hiatus in the US while Europe gave the MkII another facelift still calling it a Capri and still looking like the original Capri. It is referred to as the MkIII for model years 1979-1988 until the Mk body disappeared forever. Keep in mind that in 1984, production of Capris for the European market ceased. From then on it would only be produced as a right-hand drive model for the British market until model year 1988. The Capri moniker came back to the US as a 2+2 convertible built by Ford of Australia. Derived from the Australian Ford Laser (sold in the United States as the first-generation Mercury Laser), the Ford Capri also shares drivetrain commonality with the Mazda 323. This was another captive import for US markets. OK I'm done.... I had several MkII's and loved dusting Mustangs, Camaros, and even Corvettes on the more twisting roads. It was never a speed demon albeit for the Capri Parana (0-60 in the low sixes; great numbers when you consider the rubber used in1973), but it was a great handling car in proper hands.

So, Ford didn't need to sell any actual GTHOs any more. They, and other auto-makers, could just homologate the specific parts they wanted for their race program by peppering them throughout the production cycle as special options. For the most part the GTHO's engine homologation was enough to get them through the remainder of the (Australian) Group C era with only smallish changes but without needing to sell that whole engine in any further road cars. What an awesome video. Just when I thought I knew a thing or 2 about American muscle cars, along comes this video! Some of these cars are nice, but mostly kinda' look like the baby sister of American cars. If I ever saw that yellow Dodge Charger, Brazil version on the streets, I'd be beyond perplexed!! It "kinda'" looks like a Charger, kinda looks like a Coronet, it just looks weird and I've NEVER seen that before! I think the best one was the Ford Falcon Cobra from Australia. That looks better than the American version !! (in my opinion) THAT car looks like it has some BALLS! I'm not a fan of Ford (that much) but I like that car !! Even the name"Falcon Cobra" sounds cool AND fits that car! That green Ford Falcon from Australia looks great....from the front doors forward! That car should have been a 2 door. It just doesn't look right as a 4 door, and it almost looks like 2 cars put together to make ONE! The styling on the front end looks SO MUCH NICER than the rear. The rear looks like it belongs to a totally different car! One thing I thought of when watching this, was how open and free from emissions clutter and computerized bull shit, the engine compartments were! These cars ACTUALLY look fun to own and maintain, as if you could actually do some work on'em yourself, unlike today's American cars with a computer every 6 inches apart!!

OMG...fancy showing a grotty 318 boat anchor powered Aussie Charger as a muscle car...jeeebuzz...I nearly fainted when I saw it. The REAL Aussie Charger was the Chrysler Valiant RT-E49 265 cu Hemi Six Pack 4 Speed manual Coupe. An inline 4.3lt triple Webber 45mm DCOE carbied motor that punched out 302HP and was good for a standing quarter mile of 14.4 seconds. This Aussie Charger was the fastest accelerating naturally aspirated inline 6 in the world for many years until Holden bought out the Nissan RB turbo powered Brock Calais Director Special about 10 yrs later. Until then it would eat almost any V8 on the road in a straight line drag and it shamed more than a few Ricers in their Japanese buzz boxes. It never won at Bathurst as it didn't have the grunt of the 351 and 350 cubic inch Fords and Holdens up the steep Mountain Straight and the torque to drive them as quickly down Conrod Straight...but it was all over the rear bumpers of the bigger engined cars in the twisty bits. The 318 was reserved for the 'go slow' luxo barge option, even the 340 ci V8 couldn't get anywhere near the Hemi 6 for all out performance.

That's a moot point, because Ford Australia only 'walked' a single road version down the production line as a pre-production test vehicle, and in addition hand-made three shells for their race team. When the Phase IV got cancelled before actually going into production because of the 1972 supercar scare, the cars became almost an embarrassment so Ford quietly sold them off to private buyers. The race-built ones were only sold into the motor racing community. One was subsequently destroyed in rallying, and the rest are closely held by their owners. So, the GTHO Phase IV was never really a production car and that's why it shouldn't be in this list.

The last production GTHO was the XY model in 1971-72 (it had the distinction of being the world's fastest sedan at the time). There were prototype XA GTHOs built but they never went into production. One last nitpick, the XC Falcon Cobra shown at 2:28 wasn't a 5.8 litre 351 V8 (though that engine was available in the model). The car pictured had the smaller 4.9 litre, 302 V8.
