On June 3, 2018, TCM showed "The Letter" (1940) as its selection for its weekly "Noir Alley" show (Saturday night at midnight ET, repeating Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.) Here is the intro by host Eddie Muller, aka The Czar of Noir.

I like the way you articulate for us the nuances in films like The Letter. Few even see them, ( the nuances ) and when one watches masterpieces over again and the subtle meanings are conveyed by camera work as classical music communication - the story becomes deeper, and deeper. And one wonders if others are so intensely affected by it.Thanks for your excellent show. It is the art of fantastic film acting - especially by women - a look - hand movement that film makers are not even aware of today. A scene in Titanic (1953 ) has always stuck in my mind - Barbara Stanwyck at the cabin door after an altercation with Clifton Webb over their boy. CLIFTON: There's nothing you can say that will ever convince me to give up Norman." PAUSE - BARBARA: " He's not your son " - chills - softly said delivers the cruelest barb, the cabin door slowly closes ) - Katie Jurado raising a hand in High Noon when LLoyd Bridges storms out of the room - Susan Hayward dismissing Montgomery the reporter by ignoring - instantly turning away and continuing another conversation when he apologizes not even acknowledging he has said it at a time when she knows her Appeals have run out - tremendous emotion conveyed by a look, a gesture - in I Want To Live - these women know how to act - or just know - actresses who so understood the mystery of interaction between man and woman - masterpieces - all great actresses and some actors - but " the ladies have it. " Thanks again.I know " we " harp on it, but what a loss today is.

Eddie: Do not mention the great name of William Wyler in the same breath is that of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg can’t even shine the shoes of William Wyler and the other great directors of the 20s 30s 40s and 50s. Spielberg is overblown and overrated.
