The effect which this film has had on me for fifty-two years is considerable especially as a touchstone. I like to re-watch Carnival of Souls throughout the year but especially in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Every time I watch this film I go right back to the Saturday night in '65 when Carnival of Souls was the first half of the regular 'fright fest' on the area's leading VHF channel. I would also acknowledge my mother's diligence for finding this in the listings and encouraging me and my younger brother to watch together. No surprise that my mother did incorporate the makeup effects into some Halloween costumes going forward through at least the late-'60s which is about the time I stopped trick-or-treating and just went along with my youngest brothers as they went about their fun. Good times.

The definition of atmospheric horror. Fun fact: George Romero actually sites this as being the inspiration for his vision of zombies in Night of the Living Dead, which became the model for our contemporary zombie movies/games. That whole zombie epidemic idea wasn't a thing until then.

@Lyn Good comment. I thought this movie's many great artistic merits have been overlooked by film critics over the years. In terms of plot, setting, acting, background music, dialog, conclusion ~ all give this gem much merit. Small wonder why it had such a great influence over other film makers, notably George Romero. While this was a low budget movie done on a dime as compared with other Hollywood creations, this cannot honestly be called a Grade B monster flic. It is just too good, and too aesthetically meritorious to be branded that way.

What a beautifully done horror film dealing with a classic paranormal and religious theme -- the idea that Mary is lost in a dream world or purgatory or in-between as she hasn't yet realized or accepted what happened to her. It seems to me that this film was a major influence on David Lynch's Mulholland Drive -- a lot of similar moments and symbolism and the nightmarish dream state.

I got to see this movie at a (now closed) local art theater and was expecting just some goofy horror flick but was surprised how genuinely creepy it was. I loved the organ music which gave the movie an overworldly quality to it. Yes, the acting and dialogue are laughably bad at times but it seemed to all fit together to form this very strange dream world. The ending where Mary is being chased hrough that amazing abandoned amusement park is quite eerie. A small gem of a horror movie.

In terms of quality, 1962 was Hollywood's best year since 1939. This film was not a Hollywood film, but anybody who has seen it even once remembers it as well as any Hollywood masterpiece from that year. This movie is worth returning to periodically. The same cannot be said of tripe like "It Happened in Athens".

This is a great, atmospheric little film. It had an extremely limited drive-in run in the early sixties, and then the print got pulled, I believe because of a contract dispute between the producers and the distributor. The print got lost in the legal wrangle and stayed out of circulation for years, giving the film a reputation as a 'lost' classic. It wasn't unearthed and put out on video until the early 90s.

Honestly my grandparent's introduced me to those horror classic's and it took off from there. I've found horror from Hammer House of Horror, Vincet Price, Christopher Lee the list goes on. I've learned to appreciate movies, appreciate what some people consider blah movies but for me I feel like I'm being drawn in and love the fact that I'm sitting on the edge of my seat by the end of the movie.

From what I understand, both Jacob's Ladder (the 1990 psychological thriller) and the Silent Hill game franchise (a series about a cursed town which draws in and torments troubled individuals by exploiting their fears) both drew inspiration from Carnival of Souls. It's very interesting and cool to know about those modern works and then watch this because you can definitely see where they drew some ideas from. And, it's just a good film.

Also ein Schlüsselmoment... Tja, was soll -- mir das sagen?

I think it’s about not wanting to part of the world but not wanting to leave. She didn’t want to follow the standards of living. Play music this way, act like a woman, don’t say crazy things , don’t trespass. It was an overall undertone , do what your told and shut up. However that kind of living made her unhappy. She died and I think the movie was her last attempt at imagination before the darkness of death caught up with her. The girl was never happy with society (aka life) and the movie was like a lesson to herself , maybe she should have been nicer other than cold. The movie definitely is about the horribleness of dying
