So fun story about Coraline: When the book was written, the editor told him that the book was too scary for kids. Keep in mind that the movie is arguably tamer than the source book, not quite capturing the otherness of the Other Mother. So they decided that she would go home, read it to her kid, and see what the reaction was. The girl didn’t complain, so they went ahead and published it. Years later, he was talking to the editor’s kid and she told him “oh yeah I was scared as hell, I just didn’t tell my mom”.
