Carnivorous plants such as Venus Flytraps and North American pitcher plants are all examples of plants that need to go dormant in winter. It’s a necessary and vital stage for their long-term survival! Did you know though that not all carnivorous plants go dormant in winter?
Examples of seasonal carnivorous plants that don’t require dormancy are sub-tropical sundews which belong to the genus Drosera. Drosera include the most number of species of carnivorous plants (sundews).
They are found over widespread area spanning across continents. Sub-tropical sundews are a very adaptable group of carnivorous plants which don’t go dormant in their growing season. This is in contrast to North American pitcher plants and Venus flytraps which ‘hunker down’ during the cold winter and literally stop growing.
Knowing about the types of carnivorous plants that don’t go dormant enables you to continue enjoying your ‘savage garden’ in winter even though your other plants such as Venus Flytraps may be fast asleep. Happy growing to you!
Growing Carnivorous Plants Indoors
Did you know that sub tropical sundews make great additions as house plants? These plants love the warmer and milder temperatures offered in our homes. Make sure you give the plants plenty of light. In the Southern hemisphere this means placing your plants on a North facing window sill and vice versa for the Northern hemisphere. You can even grow these plants under artificial lights!
Feeding Your Carnivorous Plants
Carnivorous plants can also be fed manually. If you're going to bring them indoors it makes sense to supplement their diet by feeding them your self. Why? By bring your carnivorous plants indoors you're taking them away from an outdoor environment where they would normally catch prey.
