Today I wanted to talk about venus flytrap flower stalk cutting. This is probably the main question I see with new growers. Almost everyone seem to be confused about the flower stalks. Some people even think that allowing a flower stalk to grow in all instances will kill a venus flytrap, which is just not true.
Today we will talk whether or not you should cut a venus flytrap flower stalk. Also, some ideas on what to do with your flower stalk after you do cut it. Did you know you can clone your venus flytrap with flower stalk propagation? It's also true that when venus flytraps are grown from seeds you may not get a clone of the plant. If your venus flytrap is a cultivar, your seed grown plants may just be typicals.

For the most part Susan, I completely agree. I'd rather not cut the flowers. But they do work great for propagation and there are some instances where the flytrap will be better off cutting the flower. If you have healthy flytraps and you just enjoy watching it grow, leaving the flower is probably best!

This is true. I have no problem with anyone leaving them to flower! However, sometimes the plant flowers knowing it's going to die. It diverts all its attention to it's last attempt to further life by flowering and seeding. If your plant is in this mode, it's best to cut the flower if you are trying to save it. But I completely understand what you are saying, sometimes you just have to let them do what they do!

You're going to want to scale that production up. Move to seed trays at least and figure out that tech. Also, I'd try to figure out the inflection point with how small you can cut the flower stalk pieces vs strike rating. This approach should also be viable for leaf pullings as well. Btw, how often do you change out the water for your cuttings?

You can wait for it to produce seeds but you need the flowers to pollinate. You can do that with a paint brush. Or, you could cut the flower stalks before they bloom and propagate. Should I use the water tray method or water it from the top ?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 3 жыл бұрын
I recommend putting about an inch of water in the tray. Let the plant absorb the water. Dont refill the tray until the plant is close to being dry. Depending on the heat, you may need to do this often. I dont recommend keeping the tray of water full at all times. Thus can expose your plant to root rot. Dont let it dry out completely but it should be soaking wet either. If the plant doesnt absorb the water after 2 days, it's full and doesnt need it. I'll remove it from the tray until it dries out a bit.

This question isn't related, but I thought you would find it more easily. My flytrap got knocked over and almost all its leaves got torn off. It's rhizome is unharmed and is big. How long do you think it will take to grow back? On your channel, it says it would take a few years to grow to the size of a mature plant, but I'm guessing you are referring to a flytrap that was from seed and has a tiny rhizome.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 3 жыл бұрын
As long as the Rhizome is still white and intact it should take off where it left off. It might take a bit due to the shock of the fall but when the traps start growing again they should be close to the same size. Are all traps gone? At first, if all are gone they might be a bit smaller since you have nothing photo synthesizing. It might make 3 or 4 smaller traps to start absorbing the sun. Then after that it should go back to where it was. You definitely dont have to wait the 3 to 4 years of a new plant. Keep me updated on its progress, I'd like to hear how it goes. And I'm sorry for the accident, that's a bummer.

Do stacks,seeds, leaf cuttings need full sun?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
Usually yes, I typically grow my seeds and propagations under a grow light because I can control the conditions. I'd probably shoot for at least 10 hours of sun a day. The seedlings and propagations may have a hard time if it really heats up, like over 95 degrees. which is why I like growing under lights. The only problem is, once you are ready to put them out, you need to acclimate them to the sun slowly, or they will just scorch. If you raise them successfully in the sun, they are already acclimated and just take off!

It still seems to be growing just fine, but I've never seen anyone else have that happen except for one video showing another double trap. What do you think?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's super lucky! I've had one flytrap sprint 2 heads in one leaf many years ago. But not recently. Mutations make these plants even cooler. Take lots of photos and document. I'm actually a little jealous. Lol. Let me know if that plant keeps sprouting mutations. If it does, I'd do some cloning with flower stalks. Just to keep it going!

so If I let my flytrap bloom and after bloom can I cut it off or it will hurt the plant?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
If the flower is more than a couple inches long, it's already sucking the life out of the plant. A healthy venus flytrap will be fine, but one that is having problems growing needs to be cut when it's no bigger than an inch tall. Once they have bloomed, you might as well leave them as they have already exhausted most of the energy they needed.

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 ай бұрын
If your plant isn't doing great, the sooner the better. If your plant is healthy, you can let it grow a few inches before cutting, so you can propagate it.

Once a plant flowers will it stay flowering forever, or will it go back to focusing on growth again at some point?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
It depends. If it's flowering because it's dying then it probably will flower then eventually die. However, they don't always just flower because they are dying. Most flower a couple times a year then go back to normal. If your plant is super healthy, there is no reason you can't let it flower then let it get back to growing like normal.

Definitely! Always keep in mind though, the traps might get bigger and grow more if you snip it.

Im new to growing plants, I have killed off almost every single one- even the supposed easy ones… butttt I got a Venus fly trap from the grocery store, Iv had it for several months and it sits outside on my patio and seems to be good… I left it out for the entire Florida “winter” and I see it’s started to attempt to seed. I’m worried because I don’t want to kill the plant but I hear it’s also hard to successfully get new plants unless you are an experienced grower… I realllyyy don’t want it to die and need some advice 😢 it hasn’t flowered yet but I think its going to soon!

Am I supposed to repot it!? I’m also worried about that too because last time I repotted a plant in the “proper” material it grew mold somehow 😭
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 3 ай бұрын
You can repot it, but it just depends on how overgrown the existing one is. I wouldn't go more than 2 years without a repot. I'd cut off the stalks to give your plant the best chance at growing. I have a video all about propagating new plants from flower stalks. It's really not too hard!

I'm just wondering how a flytrap looks like during dormancy, is the traps and leaves completely turns black
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
Some of them do, but not all of them. It also kind of depends on how cold your dormancy is. The colder it gets the more likely some traps die off and turn black. If doing it correctly though, many of the traps will stay green but fade and look wilted. It kind of just looks like an unhealthy venus flytrap. It really doesn't look dead though.

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub So, I think shouldn't cut off the black traps in case they are just in the dormancy phase, I hope mine can turns back to greeen
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
A black trap will not turn green again. Once it's black, it's dead. During dormancy, it's good to trim the dead traps because they can be a source of mold and mildew. I try to keep them pretty clean during dormancy. You don't have to worry about cutting off anything alive, if it's black, it's dead.

Someone else mentioned it but I'm not super familiar with the system. It's a subscription right? Like, Patreon subs get something extra? I've thought a little about what I would be able to do. Any ideas? I'm wide open, especially if you are a bit more familiar with it!
@weirdboyrox
@weirdboyrox 2 жыл бұрын
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub That's true. As for getting something extra maybe try seeds? For subscribers that are plant growers that's awesome, and non-plant growers they can always give the seeds away or sell it. For big subscribers maybe get a clone of one of your plants, since you're planning on opening your own nursery some nursery will gift they big buyers extra plants. And since they are big patreon donators it could also cover the phytosanitary certificate, shipping and handling and custom fee if applicable.

That's really interesting. Definitely something for me to think about. Seeds do seem like a good idea! Problem right now is that I just don't have the stock to keep up. Once I get more plants propagating and growing from seeds, that might be something I can start to handle. In the mean time, I'm going to do some brainstorming. Thank you for the suggestion, I really appreciate it!
