Huge Beyoncé fan here. I grew up with opera music (especially from Pavarotti!) since my grandfather was an opera singer. After Beyoncé released "Daughter", I had to search for Pavarotti's version of "Caro mio ben". This video is perfect. It's just Pavarotti and the piano. His voice control is incredible, his voice sounds so soft and clean and the way he expresses emotions throughout his singing is untouched. I would have never expected that I might come back to a Pavarotti piece after listening to a Beyoncé song but I am very glad I did!

I don't think Pavarotti will ever be eclipsed. He pushed the human voice to its absolute limits, and the effortless ease with which he makes it do his bidding is mind-boggling. This is 2.5 minutes of unsurpassed brilliance.

It has nothing to do with the song being simple. It's that it is possible for students who don't (yet) have an operatic range or level of breath control to sing it. This is why it's given to beginners to learn. No one has ever claimed that any of them could sing it with the same skill as a famous opera singer could. The point is that most, if not all, beginners would be totally unable to sing opera arias.

This was a younger Pavarotti in the best of voice. The aria speaks simply and quietly for itself and calls for absolute restraint and dignity on the part of the singer...not to mention exacting breath control. Pavarotti provides it all, and yet his rich voice hints at the power underneath. He has no need to raise his volume, which would have spoiled the utter tranquility of the performance. I've listened to about 20 singers perform this aria on KZbin tonight, and this rendition takes the prize...including over a couple other Pavarotti performances of it in other venues. Every singer has good days and not so good days. This was one of Pavarotti's best.

Respectfully sir, it’s hard to imagine putting Mario Lanza in the same category with Pavarotti. Lanza often went off key which is why I gave up listening to him 50+ years ago. I agree DeStefano has a fine voice although a different style, but for me, Pavarotti is the master.
