I think that was the beauty of it. It allowed the artist the freedom to pursue their dream without the fear of being shamed if they failed. It also allowed the benefactor to choose an artist privately without being hounded by others that wanted the same deal.

Monty Hall's college education was paid for in a similar manner. He told Marc Maron he was told to return the gift to someone else (I don't believe the benefactor required repayment. ) Monty did as asked, raising millions in scholarship dollars over the years.

I ran into her once at the CBS building in L.A., at the entrance. She was being held up by a security guard who was very young and didn't recognize her. This was few years after her show had wrapped. Anyway, she was so incredibly nice to the security guard while he detained her at the front desk. I just looked at her and smiled as I was buzzed into the building and she smiled back. What a nice lady.
