I'm at 53 year old guy. Seeing Carol Burnett Really takes me back to a simple, wonderful time. My mom, dad, and sister would all gather around the tv in our modest, 70s style living room and laugh together and have the best time. Mom would even allow us to eat some snacks in the living room those nights, which was rarely allowed because of fear of a spill. ha Life was simple and good. I don't think families do much of anything like that now.

It was my favorite night of the week. The line-up was amazing! The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart and The Carol Burnett Show. SO cozy and fun. Some of my favorite childhood memories.

When did the world become like this. Why has it evolved to the way it is. I believe it is because of the innate human fear of our beliefs, choices & decisions being compromised, marginalized or ridiculed. Human nature relies so much on complete individual acceptance in one form or another so is such the mutual reliance on love for personal confidence could it be that this is the central fault of humanity instead of being comfortable with one:s inner self or mind, maybe a higher power of whatever sort. We look to the people around us for this accountability of the soul which is what religion is personified. When true artistry is not even really pure anymore and the illusion of life is perpetuated by all the nonsense proliferated by nothing but that's all there is. What can be done about it. Guessing what matters is what mankind is striving for and the struggle never end's until death is outlived is that crazy who's to say folks.

I worked with Ms. Burnett when she was the first guest star on Dick Van Dyke’s short lived variety show. This woman was a complete pro. Came to the table read having made notes in the script the night before. She learned all the names of the crew on the first day, and addressed every one by their name. On time, never grumpy, she had a sense of joy about the work. No wonder the below the line peole loved her. She made the work play.

Saw the old people sketch on Van Dyke recently where Dick threw an improvised punch into Carol’s stomach..& then it became a great free for all. Could tell there was no studio audience but could hear the crew cracking up watching what was unfolding in front of them.

I love Carol Burnett. I read a story about her where she was in a restaurant with friends and some people reported that she was "drunk in public." Carol was not drunk and she sued the newspaper that reported this and she won the case and donated the money to a charity. Good for Carol!

That article stung her terribly. Her parents were both alcoholics, and she was pretty much raised by her grandmother. She swore from a young age that she would never behave that way. So when the Enquirer came out with that hit job, she came at them with all she had. Good on her!

A dear friend of mine, who has long since passed, knew Carol when they were teenagers. They were both ushers at one of the movie houses on Hollywood Blvd. Carol was a loyal friend, and remembered where she came from. Carol never looked down at anyone...........not ever. Classy as they come. We love you, Carol!

In 1984 I worked at the Great Earth Vitamin store in Westwood Calif when Carol Burnett walked in to buy vitamins for her daughter. Just like everyone else reports she was kind and gracious. I did not make a fuss over her just treated her like I would any other person- with kindness and graciousness. She was so awesome.

In the show's seventh season, Carol Burnett fired Harvey Korman. That week, Tim Conway (who was not yet a permanent cast member) and Petula Clark were the guests and Korman was being downright rude to them (along with everyone else in the cast). Burnett does not like to be confrontational, but she realized she had to do something. After rehearsal, she went to Korman's dressing room to talk to him... he told her to mind her own business and said she couldn't dictate to him how he feels at any given moment. She tried to remind him that, since her name was the top one on their production, it was indeed, VERY MUCH her business, but Korman simply backed her out of his dressing room and shut the door in her face. Burnett then called Korman's agent and told him that, after filming tonight, Korman would no longer be working on The Carol Burnett Show. After they finished filming that evening, Burnett paid him another visit to give him the news personally. Korman asked what he could do to make amends. Burnett told him that, _"Come Monday, I want to see you cheerful. And not just on Monday, I want to see it every day of the week. We all have moods, but we don’t bring them to work. … In fact, it would tickle me pink to see you skipping around and hear you whistling in the hall!"_ The following Monday, Korman ran into Burnett at the elevator (he was getting off and she was getting on). Burnett said it was a pretty awkward moment in silence as they stared at each other but, in his uproarious style, Korman then took off, smiling, dancing, skipping and whistling down the hall, which had Burnett almost literally rolling on the floor with laughter. From that moment on, Korman became, and remained, the most upbeat actor on the show. And he was very grateful to Burnett for being both a good enough friend to point his attitude problem out to him, and for being a good enough boss to give him a second chance.

Celebrities NEVER say anything bad about other celebrities - at least not the old school ones. I recently worked with a very famous older actress on a show and we became chummy, and although the other star was the most obnoxious and mentally sick no-talent on the face of the earth, the actress would never say anything bad about her. She didn't even really know her, but she would make happy excuses for her awful behavior when I moaned about it to her. Later, when she got to know me and trusted me, she told me that she HATED this actor and wanted to run her over with her car in the parking lot at Warner Brothers. The only time I have ever seen a big star dish another star was when Bette Davis laced into Faye Dunaway. In fact, the industry was shocked that Bette did that.

My sister was a receptionist at company that had many celebrities for clients. The employees were all told NOT to make a fuss and gush over the celebrities, but just be polite, of they would get fired. One day my sister was showing another receptionist how the light meter in her camera worked (this was before digital cameras). She pointed the camera at the elevator because it was well-lit. The elevator doors opened, and there was Carol Burnett, and my sister is pointing a camera right at her. Carol got really hammy and started posing for the camera. My sister was so upset that she might get fired and started apologizing. Carol said don't worry, she's not upset. My sister said Carol was so nice and friendly.

I saw Carol Burnett at a local theater here in 2017. She did a Q&A like on her show. I remember at one point she asked if someone could bring her a chair. She asked the stage hand his name and thanked him and had him turn so the audience could see his face. She was so humble in her answers to questions too, always sharing credit with others or sometimes giving others all the credit.

I was visiting a friend who worked at the Burbank Studios in 1982 when the movie "Annie" was being filmed there, and of course, Carol Burnett was one of the principal stars of that film. My friend gave me a tour of the back lot and then we walked through a couple of the sound stages where films and television shows were in active production. He took me into the stage that housed the set for the house used in "Annie" and as we were walking out, here comes Carol, walking right towards me, in full makeup and costume for her role, and as she walked by, I said "hi Carol" and she gave me the biggest smile I could imagine. And funny, as we walked out the stage door, I noticed an old fellow seemingly half-asleep in a director's chair, and I finally realized after we left that it was John Huston.

I've watched on previous episodes, Margot Kidder with bare feet, flower girl white flowing dress, sit with both feet on the couch, knees at shoulder level. Janis Joplin sprawled all over the place. It was not cool" to seem prim and proper. So the celebrities were going overboard, trying to show that they are laid back and not uptight "old" people.

That was Cavett's great skill as a talk show host. He asked a different sort of question than the others did. His were more open-ended, drawing out his guests, rather than letting them slide by with their public personae. Many bios of celebrities of that time period reference information elicited on Cavett's show. And Lord have mercy, whatta brain. Even the people who hated him (and I can't think of any offhand) would probably have given him credit for having a top-notch mind.

@@haplessasshole9615 You need to watch the Roman Polanski interview. It was shortly after Sharon's death, about 1 and half years. Roman did most of the talking with Dick asking minimal and relevant questions that were respectful as well. Also, Roman's childhood was brought up with subtle and respectful politeness. Dick Cavett, a class act all the way. Do not make em like him at all anymore. Not even close. Also the Jim Brown & Lester Maddox debate with guest star Truman Capote. A classic episode from 1970. And RFK's death, right after with several guests, including Robert Vaughn.

According to stories by several people (including Carol Burnett), for a while during her variety show Harvey Korman was the kind of person she and Dick were talking about that they despised. He only changed when Carol told him on a Friday that he would be fired on Monday if he didn't come back as a "changed person." He got the message.

Lucille Ball had this in common with Carol; she was the funniest woman on the planet and savvy. Smart. An astounding businesswoman. Cared for “underlings.” These women are the last of a dying breed. Carol is a good listener; she doesn’t prattle on and on herself, bulldozing the interviewer; she actually is quiet when Dick talks then answers thoughtfully. I love her.

~~ Lucy had a few TV series after 'I Love Lucy' - in one she did in the late 60's - she would often have famous guest stars - but Lucy expected full professionalism from them - she expected them to know their lines and be ready to work - so when Joan Crawford did an episode - (she had long been known as a big drinker) - she was so unprepared Lucy nearly fired her - but the show was taped & aired. Richard Burton - also a BIG drinker - was so resentful after his experience on her show he was later quoted as saying; "I LOATHE Lucy".

Yes, and that the interviews are so produced. They aren't organic anymore. While maybe here Carol knew a little what she was going to be asked, the interview is still allowed to breathe. And now, you can't even rely on anything a star says. They will say whatever to get you to buy that cd or that ticket or that book.

Getting out of the way of one's guests is what is missing with talk show hosts these days. For example, if you watch Rodney Dangerfield on Johnny Carson, Carson becomes the consumate straight man ( second fiddle in comedy terms) and let's Rodney shine in his moment on the show. The whole show was better for it.

I love both of these people. I've only had glimpses of them through their work, and through interviews, and was an avid watcher and fan of The Carol Burnett Show and loved it so much. She spent her life......... entertaining us. And Dick spent his career...... enlightening us. I have immense love and respect for both of them and they have shown themselves to be VERY genuine decent human beings who have lived their lives with dignity and class, showing much respect for others as well as compassion. I think what they have shown the world of themselves speaks very highly of their character and values, and certainly, those values were exhibited here in their disdain of people in show business whose ego's have turned them into sadistic tyrants. Bravo you two. You took the high road and though that road is often lonelier and less traveled, it is the one with the greatest view and the best company in the end. Much love to them both.

I saw an interview with Carol Burnett on how she and Lucille Ball were very good frienda and how Lucy would send Carol a dozen roses every year for her birthday. As it turned out, Lucy died on Carol's birthday, and later on that day a dozen roses arrived for her. Broke my heart.

Spoken like the true professional she is. At one time I was doing stand-up comedy and let me tell you, some comedians who have a likeable stage persona, are flat out bastards off the stage. I experienced it several times until it finally sunk in that the entire business is make believe. Forget images and personas, that's only their act and they're good at faking sincerity.

Weirdly, some of the stand-up comedians specializing in insult comedy struck me as the nicest of people to meet in person if you had the chance. Jeff Ross going out of his way to perform for people in jail to provide some relief for them, for example, but I suspect Don Rickles was a great guy from some interviews I've seen.

@@weedermann Because there's no market for me any longer. I'm 62 years old now. This generation doesn't respond to my material because they can't relate to it. And I don't expect them to. They want whatever is fresh and hip today. Comedy clubs are for younger audiences. How many people my age are realistically in the clubs? I can do private gigs here and there for people of my age group, but there's no consistent work in it. It's just the cycle of life. Out with the old and in with the new. This generation will one day be obsolete too. The World keeps on spinning. But I had a lot of fun in my day and I wouldn't trade it for anything

Having watched the documentary now, I have to comment that the director, while possessed of a rather overinflated ego, was not trying to tell Carol Burnett how to be funny. He was working with her to make the pace and the timing of the jokes work better, which is what a collaborative theater project is supposed to be. All throughout the rehearsal/rewrite period, everyone - cast, director, and the extremely neurotic writer - worked together to improve the show. The director was working to find the best ways to highlight the comedic talents of Carol Burnett and Philip Bosco.
