Great comment about private schools. Respect due for subscribing to the brilliant Novara Media and Vox, a very interesting channel with an array of intriguing clips about all sorts. T'Pau one of the best bands of the last forty years for my money. The Eighties Classical performance of China In Your Hand from a few years ago is superb and a moving rendition.

When I defended Carol at the time, I was only telling the truth. I find Gary Barlows voice an unpleasant drone. I think he's very overrated. Carol does have a much better tone and voice in general than Gary Barlow, this is my view. I had to watch Gary Barlow tear apart an x factor singers performance by playing there performance back and criticizing it in dozens of ways. I remember thinking, how talented does he think he is? It's just a drone and some people can't see it. Robbie Williams is more successful and his voice is alright, the tone and everything so it is not envy or anything like that.

Barlow's comments were unfair, inaccurate and groundless. T'Pau are a great band with a legacy of real musicianship and dynamic songs. It is clear from interviews with Carol Decker that after T'Pau ended, she went through a period of lack of confidence in her own ability ( for no good reason I might add). I am sure she is tough enough to handle it and both she and Gary Barlow know what he said is untrue, but it must have rankled. Gary Barlow's voice is awful to listen to in my view, and I am a huge fan of a variety of music. 'China in Your Hand' and other T'Pau hits are iconic reminders of a golden era of pop from the eighties when the industry reached its peak of creativity ( with some exceptions to this rule of course), and it was the likes of Take That who made a massive contribution to the dilution of anything approaching quality music that we are left with today.

@@gerica82 I agree that can be true. I don't especially like Mariah Carey's voice although there is no denying she is a talented singer. Ditto Celine Dion's although I have grown to love It's All Coming Back To Me Now in the last couple of years and think her vocals on that are very powerful. I don't' think Barlow's voice has anything appealing in how it sounds or that marks it out in any way, although it is all subjective as it is just opinion.

Carol nailed it down. X factor fans get their jollies watching people get ripped up for their performance, but if the judge can't fault their singing, they can always make a snide comment about the original artist. That way the audience still gets to snicker about someone being slagged off. I have no doubt that the producers fed Gary that line, and he should have known better than to deliver it.

In 1987, China In Your Hand was number 1 for 5 weeks. This is obviously in the pre-streaming days. I’d therefore respectfully suggest that the large numbers of people who bought the single (and album) don’t believe Carol is vocally challenged

Can't say I'd ever noticed anything wrong with the singing before on 'China' so I listened again, and OK, maybe Carol is just a touch flat on a few of the top notes, not by much though, not as in 'bad karaoke singer', just 10 cents or so, if even that. But who cares, she sings with soul and passion and that's far more important than being 100% on the note. In fact it often helps to give a song that human touch. T'Pau aren't really my kind of music but they stood out, they had a certain something which lifted their music above many other bands of that genre.
