Carol Tells Tag She Doesn't Really Love Him | ER

Carol admits to her about-to-be-husband Taglieri that she doesn't truly love him the way he does her, and so he leaves before the wedding takes place. Doug comforts a very distressed Carol afterwards.

The fact that she was still very much in love with Doug here and was trying her best not to be, to convince herself that what she felt for Tag was enough...it's sad, i will always be grateful for the writers that decided to make her and Doug a thing again and really develop their story...they are one of the best things in ER.

Pretty much this. It was obvious that Doug & Carol was there endgame. They just had to stretch it out with her involved with Tag and then Shep before ulitmately getting back with Doug once he was ready to settle down.

Carol also had to see, experience and know Tag and Shep were very good men from 2 different ends of the spectrum were also wonderful companions with who she could experience happiness too. But ultimately her heart truly was with Doug. Since both men were incredible l believe they would also unite with amazing compatible women. Doug needed to come to that conclusion for himself that Carol was the one for him exclusively...alone. It was excellent writing that provide her with great partners albeit different she could have led a happy life but ultimately there was no one like Doug and Carol together. Loved their many times painful, sweet, passionate, intially intermittently turmoil ridden journey, and their lovingly personalized and transitional love that was solidified because of years in the making living separate lives apart...in different states🌅💞

Say all you want about Tag, what he did here was pretty brave. He could’ve said nothing and kept on kidding himself. Instead, he asked the question he dreaded asking, and threw away a marriage to a woman he was madly in love with.

Carol: "Why can't I fall in love with a nice guy? A guy who wants to be with me, who's honest and decent..." Doug: "Hmm...and boring..." Carol: (laughs) "God, he was dull..." (cracks up) I always loved this bit. It's not nice to Tag, but at least Carol and Doug are being honest. In her own way, Carol is acknowledging that Tag was right -- she may have loved him, but she didn't love him enough. Sometimes a person checks all the boxes, but they still don't feel right. I had a couple of relationships like that; I probably could've married the guys if I wanted, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was "settling."

I agree with you on Tag. But I can also see Carol's perspective on agreeing to Marry him. That is the great thing about the show. It makes you see both sides and understand both sides. Carol wanted to love Tag the way he loved her, she really wanted that. She was settling for Tag because she was scared of putting her heart out there for Doug who was the man she truly loved. This scene is telling you to never settle. Tag knew she was settling, he always knew that Carol did not love him the way he loved her. He was dreadign asking the question because he knew the truth.

He loved me, yet I knew that he still had feelings for his ex so I told him to go think on things. I told him that it was his decision to choose as I didn’t want regrets later on. Waiting for his decision was very difficult!!! We have been married for over 40 years now.

To tell you the truth, I thought Tag was never right for Carol. He wasn't all that supportive of her. He didn't support her in her attempt to adopt that Russian girl. I don't think he would have been supportive of her opening her clinic in the future. That was an indication that it wasn't meant to be.

I think the only reason she was with Tag and not with Doug is that Doug had cheated on her. Doug wasn't ready to settle down at the time and Tag was more reliable. Once Doug got his shit together it was obvious they were supposed to be together.

TW: Stitch incoming Carol was never a good fit for Tag. He may have his defects but at least he was honest with her. On the other hand, she cheated on him before attempting suicide and almost did it again when she had a breakdown for not being suitable for adopting that little Russian girl, which btw she was doing all that process at his back when he clearly opposed that idea. Also, the fact that she wanted to make herself think she was in love with Tag instead of just feeling it, should’ve been enough to end the engagement. But well… every character has its development. It’s good to know Doug and her end up together, and hopefully Tag met someone who fully loved him back.

The reason I don't like Tag is this scene. He was having second thoughts way before this day - you know it. Instead, he gets ready, Carol gets ready, and instead of talking about those feelings before hand - they get to the church, she's literally ready to walk down the aisle to him, and still she has to come find him, he can't find her. You're having second thoughts - the whole time you're getting ready at minimum, and most likely for sure the night before and you couldn't call Carol about it? Go see her? You wait until she's in her dress ready to walk down the aisle... I'm sorry - but this just always bugged me.
