I'd forgotten about this one. Funny but just a bit too true. My mom thought ordering a daiquiri was a guilty pleasure and used to look around like she was afraid someone from church would see her, and my dad once stole a salt shaker as if it made up for what he thought were outrageous prices.

@Dayy-zy1qw it goes deeper than that. She's surrounded by a family who appreciates nothing she does. Her mother is a bitter woman who takes her unhappiness out on Eunice. She has a sister who was Mama's favorite, yet the sister takes zero interest in Mama, leaving Eunice to take care of the old woman. And that's only the beginning

This episode reminds me so much of an actual event that happened on my mothers side of the family. My grandmother was a little old country woman who grew up in rural North Carolina. She had a garden, chicken coup, a couple hogs, canned her own foods, hung her cloths on line out back to dry, shelled butter bean and picked corn and many other things that country folks did. She was a tough old lady who spoke her mind freely and didn't care about fancy things. My mother was dating a man at the time who was from New Jersey originally named Jim. Grandma was leery about Jim when she found out he was a "yankee" as she put it but in a short time, he won her over and she came to genuinely respect him. Jim was a very kind and good man and he never met a stranger. Anyway, for grandmas 78th birthday, Jim took me, mom and grandma out of town to a swanky Italian restaurant. Oh my goodness, here walks in a little old woman who prior to this her fanciest meal was one trip to a Golden Coral. Right from the start she saw the menu and asked Jim was the price for a glass of tea four a pitcher because it was one glass, she would go home and make some tea and save him the money. Then she studied over the menu complaining about the choices. The waiter comes up and says "hello, my name is Franco and I will be your server today." She said, "Franco, where you from fellow?" Mom said, "momma, stop." He told her where he was from and grandma said, "how on Earth did you get here"? Anyway, the server didn't know what to make of grandma but they hit it off. Well, Jim ordered for me and mom and it came time for grandma and she said "I got it, I know what I want". She told Franco, "I'll have some fried chicken, collard greens with fatback, some black-eyed peas and corn bread..please". Franco's face was one of confusion and he said, "madam, we do not serve those items that you requested, might I suggest something for you?" Grandma said, "you don't serve what I wanted?" He said, "no". She said "what kinda of place is this, can't even get fried chicken"? Jim stepped in and ordered something for her and mom was about to crawl under the table in embarrassment. I was only 9 years old at the time and was about to kill myself laughing. The food came and grandma ate about half of it, said it gave her gas....out loud of coarse. Then she asked for a take-out box and mom said "mother, you don't do that here, leave it." Grandma said, that's what's wrong with this generation today, your wasteful!" Anyway, after many strange looks from the customers around us and mom turning red as a beet, it was time to pay the bill and leave. Then the manager came out and wanted to speak to grandma. He said, "I heard that you were not satisfied with your food, I am so sorry is there anything that I can do for you?" Grandma said, "Well....its my birthday and Jim wanted to impress me and spent allot of money on this and I appreciate it, I just ain't never ate out much, I didn't mean to make a fuss." The manager who was very nice said, "I understand, I want all my customers to leave happy so if there is anything I can do for you please do not hesitate to tell me." He shouldn't said that. Grandma said, "Ok, now that you asked, she said try learning how to cook some real food, like chitterlings, collards, fried chicken, etc. I think it will help draw in more business for you." Then she said bye and out the door she went. Mama said that she would never take grandma out to eat again. Boy what a day that was. Grandma has been dead for years and now mom is in her late 70's. Jim passed away about 5 years after that day of a massive heart attack at work. That "fancy" restaurant went out of business long ago and the lot was redeveloped. Today, a vape store sits there. Go figure.

Yes, it was Eunice acting out and yelling that ultimately go them thrown out but all she wanted was to have a nice experience in that miserable life of hers and those two human anchors were hell bent on making sure she didn't have it by griping endlessly about everything and anything. I always felt sorry for Eunice because as funny as the character is and as brilliant as Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman and Vickie Lawrence in their respective roles are, Ed and Mama would not take their feet off her neck. Eunice reminds me of many people I know who so desperately yearn for a better life yet are always torn down by their alleged loved ones. They truly are a toxic brew. But again, how brilliant are those actors and everyone involved in The Carol Burnett Show? I will never grow tired of watching it.

In the 1970s I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home (parents had split up, mother had custody of us kids. She was a mentally ill, abusive monster). As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of tv as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery. The Carol Burnett show was one of many tv shows I watched regularly in daily syndicated reruns. More than just entertained me, it really helped me to preserve what few shreds of sanity I had as well as provided me with much needed happiness, laughter and joy in an otherwise joyless existence. The Carol Burnett show was the one and only tv show whose sketches had me and my sister literally rolling on the floor, clutching our sides with laughter (especially if the sketch had Tim Conway in it. He was the best). EXCEPT for these "The Family" sketches. When Eunice yelled and/or scrunched up her face in anger, she was the exact spitting image of our mother. It was just too painful. My sister and I would sit completely stone faced through these "Family" sketches. I don't recall them eliciting a single laugh from either one of us (not even the occasional presence of Tim Conway helped).

I feel the same about my mom. She loved the Beverly Hillbilly's. I was a teenager. On my way out the door to no where she would say "oh, I wish you would sit down and watch this with us" I thought it was the dumbest show ever. I would give anything to be able to watch the Beverly Hillbilly's with mom and dad again.

Exactly. On the one hand, I feel for Eunice that she’s frustrated that her husband is a cheapskate towards her but spends on himself generously, and she just wants to do nice things sometimes. But, while on a few occasions the mother was being a little too finicky and difficult, Eunice was also being pretty toxic by criticizing her husband’s choice of food, and being way too rude to her mother over and over and over again. Every single person in this group was unpleasant. Just… ugh.

Sure is. However, back in the mid-70s, minimum wage was less than $2.50 an hour, house payment was $175 to $250 monthly, average income per household was $12,000 a year. Inflation is always higher than a blue collar worker's wages. Women, sadly, always been paid less than men and bare the blunt in a lot of cases, including being single parents. 😎

When I was younger my mother used to embarrass me something awful. If they filled her coffee cup to the brim she would start making a scene about no room for cream. I grabbed the cup and drank some to make room. I'm saying will you be quiet, I made room for your cream. The thing is she always wanted to be the center of attraction everywhere we went and would always make a scene about something.
