I was in the audience seeing this taped at CBS in 1976, a few months after moving to Los Angeles. Alice Ghostley was in the audience, and she stood up when Carol introduced her. It was only in the last few years that I was able to view it as it was shown on TV. It's more meaningful to me today than when I watched the live performance.

This comedy sketch is a depiction of what goes on in the real world even today. The kids are seeking an outlet for their frustrations, and unfortunately, it spills out at school. The poor dears. 😢

@@rosemaryogilvie6842 @Miss_Camel and so many in the general public don’t care that it happens. Everyone gets frustrated when they see this stuff on social media but then nothing is done to address it. Family situations heavily affect the way students perform in school, be it socially, emotionally, and/or academically. These situations are greatly individualized, which leads to fractured results where 1) parents are actually helping (what ever that means), 2) think that they are helping but with little if any results, or 3) they don’t give a damn. And people then say homeschooling is better. Yet with parents like you see in this video, You really think they can improve their son’s situation academically, emotionally, and socially while being homeschooled?? I doubt Bubba would care/want at all to learn in such an environment.

As an elementary teacher for the past 25 years, I can state that this is not that far from what we face with some parents. I once had a meeting with the principal, a student of mine and his mother after he'd been stopped chasing and hitting another boy who'd upset him. We told him he should've told a teacher rather than trying to retaliate, to which his mother agreed, saying, "That's right! I don't think teachers can be this candid in today's political climate. As a domestic abuse survivor, I appreciate the realism and the pathos of the sketch. People not touched by abuse may find this funny, and lucky they are, but this piece touches a nerve about the real lives of many of our students.

School and teachers were always the out for abused kids. The one place they could feel safe and secure was school. I saw many kids who were in dire straights at home, excel in school. They always had one teacher who seemed to motivate them. I had several who did and consider myself lucky. If teachers were allowed to teach and not have continuous interference from parents and administration, they could make a lot of kids succeed instead of giving up due to their circumstances at home. In a lot of ways, we have tied their hands. The only option is to kick kids out now, to quickly. Or, they drop out. Bubba is a popular name to call prison inmates. This sketch shows why.

I was a child in the 70's and was not exposed to horrible adult behavior such as demonstrated in the skit. In fact, I stopped watching Carol Burnett and the sequential spin-off of these characters because it was not funny. At this age, and now that I lived through the period of The Rosanne Show and Malcom in the Middle, not to mention countless others, I am offended and blame this type of humor that was fed on mainstream media in partial responsibility for the degradation of polite society and the appreciation of kindness. Oooh. This was really painful to watch. Really nice to see a much younger Dame Maggie Smith than I am used to, but the subject, the interactions - well they left me in tears and my stomach in knots. Too real for some if us. Thank heavens I had teachers along the way who cared.

Laughter follows Carol Burnett wherever she goes, but the comedy legend is opening up about a particular scene she once filmed that took a serious turn. The 87-year-old star revealed a sketch she rehearsed in 1974 for her iconic television series, "The Carol Burnett Show," that left her devastated. While speaking to The Wrap, Burnett recalled filming a scene for the show featuring guest star Maggie Smith, along with herself as character Eunice, Harvey Korman as her husband Ed, and Vicki Lawrence playing her role as Mama. The scene involved the Eunice and Ed paying a visit to their son Bubba's Sunday School teacher, played by Smith, to discuss how he was acting like a bully to his peers. During the scene, it's revealed that Bubba was acting out due to his upbringing at home, according to the outlet. Burnett said the actors performed the skit without their usual Southern accents and overstated style, following a suggestion from someone on set. “Before we were going to take, one of us said, ‘You know, just for fun, let’s do a run-through of this without doing the accents and without going over-the-top, let’s do it. Like it would be for real people, you know?’ And we did. And it was, it was devastating.”

She meant that, by doing the scene "straight", with no humorous intent, the dialog is serious and dark. A depiction of a seriously disfunctional family, and a child who is being damaged by his parents tirades.
