There's more restrictions being implemented at Chanel that make it even harder to shop there and that got me to thinking how is any of this luxurious? I can think of so many experiences I've had at luxury boutiques like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Fendi that are far from what should be associated with buying designer luxury items. I'm sharing my thoughts on these new changes and rules at Chanel along with three stories of shopping at these stores that are really the worst of the worst.

I went to van cleef in New York a few years ago with zero purchase history. They were super welcoming, showed me all the items I was interested in and then took me on a tour of the store which was fascinating since it's the flagship. I was very clear that I wasn't buying anything that day and it didn't bother them whatsoever. They even put a 100k watch on my wrist for the fun of it without me asking because they were super passionate about all the jewelry and the brand. It really contrasts with my experience at chanel where I was asked to pay at the back of the store twice (not sure if it had to do with the pandemic but I was not impressed). Also when I got home I realized one of the shoe boxes was ripped. I'm not saying I'll never shop at chanel again but I'll only buy if I really love the item because the experience around it is not something I enjoy. My opinion now is that true luxury is effortless. Exclusivity is linked to the finest materials and craftsmanship, not quotas.

100% agree with that statement. I don’t understand how luxury stores got to the conclusion that quotas make them exclusive. To me when I think of quotas, I think of being limited to buying two packs of toilet paper at Target during the pandemic 🤷🏻‍♀️

Question and demand. They’re major brands on the socials which skyrocketed demand. They can sell less stuff, whilst making more money. Simply play into FOMO cut corners and hoorah, another 5 billion goes to the richest people on the planet. People are easy targets for marketing believing expensive equals luxury or good quality. Which is clearly not the case. But as long as they can get away with it they’ll do it.

The lines outside the boutiques have been the norm in Australia for many many years and I always find it so weird. You're going to spend thousands of dollars but first you're going to wait outside as if you're in line for a free lunch or something. Not a very luxurious experience.

I would rather wait in line knowing the boutique will not be overwhelming/over crowded when I want to look around. I don’t want to be at boutiques waiting for a service like at a crowded bar waiting to be served. Also when I’m trying bags on, I tend to leave my bag on the counter and if the boutiques are crowded, I would not feel comfortable doing that.

Yea because of that I went To Dior instead the crowd was there too but Dior staff came out and thank us for waiting and if anyone wants cold bottle of water they were so nice and also o told the staff I’m just looking around for next bag and seen Caro and saddle I wanted saddle but they dun have the color I want regardless I thank them and walked out empty handed. Nevertheless it was still better experience than Chanel. Chanel is like Abercrombie and Fitch y’all they only wan you if you’re ‘cool’ ‘rich’ ‘pretty’ so they will make u buy more n more. I swore I was in Amsterdam waiting to get in I’m only 4 person behind to get in. And there comes a fat man with a kid telling the staff that his wife has appointment. She walked out of the car the latest and yes she looked down.. u better look down they the. Proceeded to be greeted warmly and off inside the store .

It never used to be like that in the 90's when those big brands first came to Australia, the stores used to be empty and the big names seemed to have little recognition. Now the marketing has changed and they now have mass appeal through the internet. You see....people are drawn by hype these days because true luxury has been forgotten, the new consumers of the last 40 years largely no longer knows what it is anymore since globalisation. Real luxury is hard to find, and much of it comes from names unknown to the public.

I am DONE with Chanel. I went to the HARRODS boutique today and it was dignity-stripping. While I was looking at the costume jewelry trays along with another lovely young Asian woman, she was taking some pictures for her friend. Then the SA suddenly raised her voice and yelled at her “I told you 3 times to not take pictures! Get out of the boutique, you’re not allowed to buy anything!!!”. That poor woman nearly started crying, didn’t understand English so well, asked “what?” and said sorry many times over again. I was paralyzed. I don’t care about their new nonsensical company policy, this is not how you enforce your stupid rules. Then I attempted to purchase the earrings I liked and I was NOT ALLOWED to purchase them. The SA told me that I had purchased two pairs in the last 2 months already (both of which were presents for my mom) and couldn’t buy any more costume jewelry. I was very startled and asked if there was any way I could still purchase it. I offered to do it through my mother’s account. Then the SA (which was a different one from the one who kicked the lady out) raised her voice at me, everyone stared, and yelled “DO YOU WANT ME TO BREAK CHANEL RULES FOR yOu?!”. I was absolutely appalled. I will never purchase from this brand EVER again. It used to be my favorite and my mother and I have spent 50.000£ on this brand over the years. I’m not a masochist and I refuse to see other customers degraded in my presence. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I made an official complaint with HARRODS customer service and they will forward it to Chanel’s HARRODS manager. I’m not crawling on all fours and begging for anyone’s permission.

I am a guy, who happens to like shopping and gifting luxury marques for others. I have had similar experiences at a Chanel boutique, not just once either but several times. All in the past couple of years. Prior to that, I had what I would consider normal purchasing and shopping experiences at Chanel. I believe something has changed in this company's management and hence what they are instructing their employees to do, say, or ultimately how they behave. The manner in which Chanel and some of these other brands like Louis Vuitton or whatever attempt to portray themselves as "expensive" and "high dollar" is juvenile - akin to how stereotypical clique-ish teenage girls in high school might behave to attempt to exclude or belittle others. It's so silly and off-putting - for products that, I will be blunt - aren't even really that valuable or expensive. Expensive for a bag or jewelry maybe, but that's it. I am no stranger to shopping and doing business with a variety of higher end products in many industries not just "high end" fashion. Examples are cars, watches, food and wine, house builders, banking, etc.: Porsche, Omega, Napa Valley wineries, and on and on. I have walked into German and Italian auto and bike dealers whose products DWARF the cost and price of a handbag or pair of earrings or whatever. Yet, I was and am consistently treated very well - even if they knew from the beginning that I had no intention of making a purchase that day. They would literally hand me the keys and told me to take a spin on my own and enjoy driving and experiencing their products. Why? Because they and their management understood basic customer service and long-term business strategy. They understand word of mouth and reputation, and selling the luxury experience of doing business with them. Honestly the fashion industry is a bit of joke.

Strangely enough, my experience at my local Chanel was lovely. It wasn't the best but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I didn't buy anything too and was very clear that I wanted to try on some bags before deciding on a purchase. My worst experience was at Dior just across from the Chanel store when I walked in to see a black Lady Dior and was very keen on purchasing it. They only had the seasonal bags displayed on shelves, so I asked the SA whether they had any in stock. He said yes they did, but only in the back in the stock room. I asked whether he could take it out for me to see because I was very keen. He said, "no, we don't usually take out the bags to show customers, but you can see it on your phone." And he pulled out his phone and showed me the Dior website. I was floored, like obviously I knew I could see it on the website but the colours of certain bags (like the blush pink) are different on the website vs in person, and I believe that if you want to make an expensive purchase like that (let's be honest, none of these bags are worth their inflated price tags), you have to try it on. I'd rather go on the resale market where the value of Dior bags drops like a stone and the consignment stores and resellers have much better customer service. My best experience was at Tiffany & Co. where our SA let me try all the crazy expensive diamond jewellery, including a huge diamond-encrusted ring which cost like 300k, when we were just in there to get a modest 10k wedding ring. Now, I never buy jewellery from anywhere except from that SA, and if she's not working, I'm not entering the store. I think that's what luxury should be - the best customer service money can buy, and then some.
@CAROLCHANNELINGCHIC
@CAROLCHANNELINGCHIC 2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow that SA was so rude. I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Why bother going to the boutique if you can’t even see the bag in person. Might as well just order it online. My Dior SA would let me try on the same bag in every single color if I asked. The jewelry boutiques seem to care more about maintaining client relationships and it reflects in the service. I don’t think I’ve met a bad SA at Tiffany, Cartier, VCA etc but I do think their logistics can be improved. Just this past Sunday I had to wait 45 minutes after arriving for my servicing appointment at VCA because they helped someone who came after me first because no single person knew the order of the appointments.
@Enchanteralle
@Enchanteralle 2 жыл бұрын
That Dior sounds ridiculous. What is the point of having bags in a store and telling you they have the bag, but not let you see or try in person? I have hits and misses at Chanel, but I recall I made it clear I just want to try on the coco handle but I don’t see it on display in store and an SA went to the back room to take one brand new one out which is supposedly on reserve to let me try it on. I personally didn’t have a good experience at. Dior boutique either. An SA rolled her eyes at me when I asked to try on earrings and she walked away and left me at the counter after she took out the earrings.

I feel so done with trying to buy a Chanel bag from a boutique due to the awful customer service. I feel like I'm just going to have to get one going the pre-loved route. After I watched your video on the reissue mini vs. small, I went to two boutiques looking for it and neither had it (so they say). It would be my first Chanel bag so I don't have an SA or buying history. First time, I was followed around by security and no one talked to me for 20 minutes, and it was only because security finally paged someone. Second time, they spoke to me so condescendingly and told me I could try lining up like everyone else on launch day. I told them that I would not be lining up. They took my name and number on a scrap piece of paper, so I don't expect any call from them at all. They probably threw it away. When I go into other boutiques, specifically Dior and Celine, they are super nice and helpful. I would rather buy from nice people to be honest. I still really want the reissue just because I love the history of the bag, but I'm probably not going to be able to get it any time soon :(.

I'm surprised this is news to you guys. In Sydney Australia it's been like this for past few years. They never accept reservations, never will ship things to you. When they package your goods they take away all the tags. There's no such as purchasing through the website. The only way to buy anything is to keep going in and ask. Or if your SA has something they will call you and you have to run to the stores asap for it. I was even told by staff from Sydney flagship store that they will call everyone who's asked them for certain items if that certain item comes in and if customers don't pick up they will text. Then it's first come first serve. So whoever replies first and can get to the store first will have it. There's practically 0 service. There's 3 stores in Sydney and was told the same thing that there's no reservations, can't put name down for anything. Can't reserve for unreleased future collection. I've contacted the online customer service team and they tell me the same thing. We can just check what's available in each boutique.

That is horrible! The demand is so high in Australia that they don’t even have to try to get sales. The whole process seems more in line with what you’d expect from a bargain dollar store than a luxury boutique.

My 2 yr. old 2.55 classic bag hardware already shows wear and I rarely use it. It's where you turn the knob to close the bag. I was devastated to see the wear and tear. So, yeah, no more Chanel.

Almost every luxury store uses the online queuing system now.. Chanel Dior Cartier etc.. I really don't like it either. If you have no appointment with SA, the waiting time is usually 30 minutes to even up to 2 hours 🙄😕 I have no time all day to wait! Not like it's on sale or items are readily available too. I am definitely taking a break from the brands

The chanel vip boutiques are for their super rich clients, basically some of their clients have complained about shopping not being luxurious especaully when the store are crowded. Basically the vip's are tired of shopping with those less rich than themselves and Chanel cares about the super rich not the ones who have to save and only buy handbags. Chanel want customers who buy haute couture, high jewelry ready to wear the bags are not important to their bottom line.

Ratio of bad to good SA is too high at Chanel. LV is slightly better. They’re all very transactional (and short term focused) even though they expect the customer to be loyal.

Post Covid, in store luxury purchase experience is the worst. I rather buy online. The lines to limit entrance is comical. I used to love LV, no longer care to shop there anymore, used to love Tiffany, SA is meh, no longer care for that brand too. Cartier stores experience still ok, depending on store staff.

I find the jewelry boutiques still provide pretty good service. But I don’t even bother with LV boutiques since shopping on their website is so much better. I went there over two hours before closing once and they stopped taking any more names for their queue already.

I just found and watched this video now because I am researching how to go to a Chanel boutique for the first time. There is literally a Chanel boutique 3 blocks from my home or a 5 minute walk, and I'm scared to walk in there because I keep hearing how horrible they are! I don't want my first Chanel boutique experience to be tainted by rude SAs! Trying to figure out how to dress and which bag to carry to go in so I'm not treated badly. Now that's NOT a luxurious experience! I have noticed I enjoy going to the LV in Saks rather than the standalone LV boutique a few blocks away from me though. They are so much nicer! So maybe I'll find a Neiman's with a Chanel to go to instead of crossing the street and going to the standalone boutique 5 minutes away. I need to see caviar vs. lambskin in person though and how long the chain is on a WOC so can't avoid this scary experience. Ugh.

Yeah in my experience the SAs inside the department store Chanels are friendlier but you don’t have to buy from the rude ones if you come across someone like that. Don’t let a rude SA ruin your experience there and you shouldn’t feel the need to impress them with your outfit. I feel like the mean ones will be that way no matter what unfortunately. But if you rather try on the bags without feeling like you’re being judged, are there any resale/consignment shops by you that you can stop by? Even if you don’t intend on buying preloved you can confirm your choice there first and then go to Chanel when you know exactly what you want.

@@CAROLCHANNELINGCHIC good idea! We don’t have resale shops in DC, but I’ve seen them back home in Los Angeles when I visit my family. I tend to do my luxury shopping there since it’s easier with a lot more options of locations. Just bought a Loewe bag I was finally able to see in person there. Should just bite the bullet and go to Chanel during business hours during the work week when no one else will likely be there and am not competing with the weekend crowd. Sad that I feel this dread before going to a luxury store! I agree with you about preferring to purchase online if possible and tend to do that more with LV.

It sucks that Chanel doesn’t sell any of their bags online. Even if they don’t sell their classics online, at least having some styles be available would be good especially so people who don’t live near a boutique can still make purchases. I really don’t understand some of these companies’ business strategies sometimes. I’m curious what Loewe bag you got. Was it the Puzzle?
@Lee73Lee
@Lee73Lee Жыл бұрын
 @CAROL CHAN I guess Chanel is trying to be too exclusive and snooty :) Even Hermes seems more approachable in some ways to me than Chanel. I'd much prefer to walk into an Hermes store than a Chanel one! Yes, I bought the Loewe puzzle! I tend to like classic pieces with a twist though so I would prefer to buy a Chanel seasonal piece that not many will have since they are limited or a color that most people wouldn't buy. So I bought the puzzle in the mini size in the color orange for a small pop of color--not too overwhelming but not the standard tan color in size small like most people get that blends more into the crowd. My perfect classic with a bit of an edge style as I once heard a celebrity define it :)
