Courtney Questions: "What's that sound?" We always called it a cluster chord. Basically, every person just picks a note to play (never the same as the people on either side of you). The effect is like pressing every key on an organ at the same time. You still have to play that note in tune and with good quality or the effect is ruined. "Look at him holding his ears. It must be so loud." Yes, it's very loud but that's not why he's doing it. Drummers wear ear plugs to hear better. Brass guys CUP their ears to get the full power effect, or plug them to hear bad tone quality, missed releases, balance and blend problems, intonation issues, etc. It's the easiest way to identify BAD playing at extreme volumes..... which you won't find in this video.

Couldn't have said it myself. However, if I were sitting in the middle of that circle, I would be covering my ears because I was scared of becoming deaf, not to check for intonation.

@@benjaminli188 When I marched our brass staff got a decibel meter and, at full blast, we clocked in at almost 120 dB, which is about as loud as a chainsaw. And I can guarantee you we weren't on the level of Crown's 2017 brass line.

@@benjaminli188 Not sure what your age group is, but no harm starting with a smaller corps, get the feel of what Drum Corp is all about and then try for one of the bog boys when you're ready, this will put less pressure on yourself also. "it must be so loud" oh man yeah believe me it is, this is pretty much a warm up, more specifically a Tuning sequence. Tuning is pretty much making sure everyone is playing together and Even like you said. If a group of musicians aren't in tune you hear "waves" in the sound which is the difference in the tuning of Instruments, the waves are produced when the difference frequencies clash against each other. When they started playing the crunch cords and then reverting back to the tuning notes it's them hearing the difference between the out of tune chords and in tune chords. And then of course the the "hit" which is the big opening chord that is played. Lots of corps do this in different ways but Crown has the craziest and most well known way of doing this. Also yes most of us are called and geeks but people are starting to see that were not all that bad 😂.

Honey that's just a horn warmup exercise. We did this kind of thing every day. And I can tell you that at 51 years old i'm about deaf. Notice how they hold their ears in the center of that circle. I also stood in front of massive speakers on stage for years in rock bands afterwards. DCI was one of my favorite things in life thus far.. You should have just done it. It's expensive but worth every penny. Except you tend to lose your hearing. It's on the average of 130 decibels, which will indeed make you deaf.

The reason we are called band geeks is because of the highlight sports have in American Highschool. The sports get hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding and music programs don’t get very much at all. Musicians at the Highschool level are seen as a lower class citizen

Courtney Coulston I know right! We put in far more hours and even make state finals and still we don’t get recognition. Our Highschool sports teams are pretty bad too.

I enjoy your reactions . . . I still get chills and I have been involved in the Drum & Bugle Corps activity for 60 years! I joined my first corps at age 14 and now, at 74, I still love the harmony of a full and balanced horn line. Also, I still play . . . even tomorrow, I will be playing my bugle - playing TAPS for a fallen veteran's funeral ceremony. I can tell your feelings are genuine and spontaneous . . . making me proud of the activity that has been such a part of my life. Yours, Former U.S. Marine Sergeant, Paul Merton Showalter, Wyandotte, Michigan, U.S.A.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and enjoy the fine Marching Arts. For so long we have been overlooked or considered "Band Geeks" but no one really understood the time, energy, blood, sweat, tears and injuries that we all put ourselves through to perfect that 12 minutes you see on the field. To you and everyone who has ever put on a uniform or supported the Marching arts i say Thank You and many blessings to you all! Bluecoats Pit 89-92

There is a reason Carolina Crown has, for many years, been called God's Hornline. Being in the stands during a competition isn't just watching a performance, it's an experience. And with the greats, it's not just the volume, it's the intricacy and delicateness they can achieve while simultaneously rumbling your insides with an almost overwhelming wall of sound.

Love my former corps Crown was marching with them in 1993 as a Euphonium player and got called to go to the Bluecoats who was a top 12 corps that year and it was my ageout year. Kevin Smith basically told me if I didn't go to Bluecoats he would kick me out of Crown. I will always be forever grateful to Crown for teaching me how to play Euphonium. Thank you Kevin Smith and all the instructional staff the winter of 1993. Lifelong CROWN fan.
