Probably too expensive to send the whole corps, and i'm assuming this is after the actual season, this was probably a volunteer/for fun type exhibition event. Sad the Japanese crowd couldn't see them in their full glory, but it's impressive that they were able to still change their show up to make up for all the holes

This trip was during the scholastic/collegiate year, so classes were in session at the time. The vets with the most years got “first dibs”, but not everyone was available to travel for ~12 days while school was in session. Everyone who wanted to go sent in an interest email waaaay early in the 2014 season, and then the staff worked their way down the list as more details came through, and even made some calls. I think one of the snare drummers aged out in 2010? 😅 If I remember correctly, the actual price for each member was about ~$300 or so. My round trip flight to/from SouthCarolina/Michigan was actually more expensive than what I paid to Crown for this entire trip. There were a few different ways that the corps got enough money to go (Yamaha might have helped? We also taught a couple clinics there with our staff), but I also know the people of Takasaki were *very* generous to us; we homestayed with some families from the local marching band for a few days before traveling to Tokyo. It was wonderful. We will remember this trip and their kindness *forever* 🇯🇵🎉🇺🇸
