Saw this live last night and the tone that crowns low brass plays this with is a very different feel than I’ve ever heard from them- it was a whole other level. This brought me to tears. Powerful, beautiful, moving. It’s got everything there to be iconic.

I always find it interesting to see two different groups play the same source music. Good example of this is “the triumph of time”, with BD and SCV in 2017

Nice! I’m excited to hear their show. I find that for me, it’s more fun to transcribe little excerpts and features rather than the whole show. I did crown’s entire show last summer and it just burned me out lol.

That’s awesome, I was really unsure if it was a really bad timed entrance or if there was actually a pickup 16th. It was the first show so I assumed a bad entrance lmao. Towards the end of your season, I could hear it clearly but that’s so funny

Not a brass player but a marching fan here. This piece honestly doesn't move me. By comparison Moon River brought half the stands to sobs at the Rose Bowl.

Crown ballads are always majestic, epic, and earth-shaking- with immaculate, clinically precise dynamics, intonation, and articulation. Their priority is "control" above all else. But other corps such as BD, Bloo, Cavs, often edge out Crown in "heart" - there's a musicality and energy that comes from just blowing your guts out enjoying a big crowd pleaser with a catchy tune, with maybe slightly less emphasis on playing "perfectly". I love both approaches and it's why I love drum corps because we get a variety of different musical philosophies performed with incredible levels of execution. All that said, I love this year's Crown ballad and will probably listen to it on repeat for the next several months.

@@BluesClues2s Is what you are describing just the corps’ respective reputation or is it consistent season by season? At the Rose Bowl the BD hornline was as ‘precise’ as any. They had a piccolo trumpet player that was outstanding and highly entertaining. They do this rehearsal styling called spacechords that’s all over the internet that seems to be the epitome of ‘control’ at least to my novice ears 😅

@@FBarnacle BD is often an Ott contender too. They're all excellent, extremely technical musicians by any metric. But stack any year's BD and Crown ballads next to each other and there's a clear difference in both ensemble playing style, music choice, and musical arrangement approach. I'm not saying one or the other is better but they are very different.
