Ive never quite understood the space chords. The trouble is that alot of high schools are doing these tuning warm- ups without really realizing what they do and how they work. Band directors, especially young ones, have to be more original and quit copying other genres.

In my schools marching band the brass techs are making a drop the hammer warm up but instead using chords from our show that we are doing

The purpose of space chords is to get the unison tuning b-flat (or whatever chord you’re tuning) out of your ear. Then, when you go back to the note or chord you’re tuning, the goal is to lock in tune right away. Maybe you should learn the pedagogy before you start talking bad about band directors?
