Jolson is timeless and Thank God they re-recorded all his hits in the late 40's. He not only got to be A HOT DADDY in his final 5 years, but now we have what will be his legacy forever. The much deeper register of his unique voice (he was a high tenor when he was a broadway star) plus this new thick creamy resonance totally come together with his over-the-top "you aint hear nuthin yet" style and we have JOLSON at his absolute pinnacle of singing. He not only made the first "talking movie", and was the first to put a runway in a Broadway house, and the first to take Broadway shows out on the road, and one of the first stars to fly to WW2 troops to entertain them ... from which he got malaria and had to have an entire lung removed. Singing like this and on 1 lung........ I for one am greatly appreciative I got Jolson and he was dead when I was born.

Did any then 61 year-old singer ever sound as good? Barbra and Ella were still great at that age, but my point is that Jolson was still at the very top (along with these two) of his game in 1947. Even in 1950 - when Al Jolson recorded his beautiful Stephen Foster songs, he still fully had it! Just months before his death.

Ever since I was little my grandma would rock me singing this song. She’d pause for me to finish her sentence, to sing in the morning. She still does it to this day. Just hugging me and rocking me back and forth. It’s a habit now, doing this to little ones, cradling them and singing this song to them hoping when they grow they’ll sing with me.
