When my mom learned that my dad had been captured during WWII, one of the things she did was go to an arcade downtown that had a little recording booth and record this song with no accompaniment. She kept it as a keepsake for the rest of her life. She played it for him when the War was over and he came home. I discovered it in their large record collection and played it, a few times. She really had a beautiful voice, and I could hear her emotion. The recording wasn't very good quality, and unfortunately over the years it became unplayable on any turntables. I had tried to record it onto tape, but that didn't last, either. I'm not sure what happened to the recording as I grew up and got on with my life. I couldn't find it among my parents' belongings when they passed.

These old 1940's songs from the WW2 years were wonderful. My boyfriend left me in 1967, drafted into the Vietnam war. He did return unharmed thank God however our relationship wasn't like it was when he left. I know I used to write to him a lot but I never found the words to tell him how much I loved and missed him. Listening to these old songs now makes me sad to hear the words I could have written to him. Perhaps we would have been together after that war. He married and was married for over 40 years and I'm sure he was happy. He passed almost 3 years ago. He was my first kiss and first love. 💔

My parents are the WWII generation so I heard bits and pieces of this music growing up and I've always loved it. Standards like this one were covered by so many, especially here in the USA. But this woman's delicate voice is the one that always brings me to tears, especially when I consider what must have been happening just outside the recording studio in 1943 in the UK and the tough times my parents' generation endured.

My mom loved this song - she said it reminded her of my Dad. He was very good looking and when he came back from the war in 1946 she saw him come into the office. He was the new BOSS. His gaze met hers for a second - she looked away & thought to herself - don't be stupid- how could such a sophisticated gentleman be interested in a girl from a farm. Wasn't long after that encounter he invited her out to dine & dance. Life was beautiful then. I miss them both sooo much 😢. He really was a wonderful gentleman- business like but caring. He died when I was 11 - my Mom educated us both - they had started a mining supply business in the Goldfields of South Africa.

Fernando Mik ...and racism. don't forget the racism. but if you like how people acted then more and stuff, do that yourself and others may follow. and as for the music, people are still performing this old jazz music and stuff. the trends just moved away from it, and it brought us a lot of other good, different music too. but the fact that that exists doesn't at all affect your enjoyment of this, just get a few cd's of it and use them instead of radio stations in your car and use youtube at home.

I didn't know this song was about going away to war. An elderly lady sings this beautifully in a nursing home I play guitar in. Up to now I always thought the person in the song just went away as is the routine practice of today's relationships, lol. But heading off to war it brought a tear to my eye. It expresses the desperation of those waiting for them to come home and wanting them to know they were loved.

Vera Lynn and Jo Stafford kept UK going in the second world war. Music you can sit still to. Beautiful.....

Sorry Brenda, I was a teenager in England during the war and I never heard of Jo Stafford at the time, she was American. We had Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields, Ambrose, Henry Hall andJohn McCormack.

Brenda. Jo Stafford is one of my favourite singers but during wartime Britain she wasn't that well known here. The other iconic female singer those days in the UK was Ann Shelton.

I'm not ashamed to admit that "The Shape of Water" sent me here b/c how else are we going to broaden our horizons? Some of the very best & most romantic music I've ever heard has come from the show, "Call the Midwife". I may not have been born until years later, but I still recognize a TRUE love song when I hear it...

I am 28 years old, I like this song, I like the songs of the era of the 30s, 40s, 50s until the 2000s, but I identify more with the first three decades that sensitivity was had before in creating songs, Good luck, take good care of yourself.

Vera Lynn, my all time favorite singer. I'm glad to see new movies are bringing in new listeners. Her voice is one of the best. She deserves this recognition before she passes. For those who don't know, this amazing woman is still alive. Born in 1917, and now 101 years old. A true legend.

It was the sob in the voice at a time in history when so many were in tears. A voice far more mature than I believe she was, having begun her career in her late teens and knocking them out.
