Carolina Skiff J14, How to Patch Holes in a Fiberglass Skiff

I'm restoring my Carolina Skiff J14 back to new! This episode is all about patching the 9 million holes that were drilled into this skiff! Stripping the boat is easy, but I wondered...will I mix the putty properly, will it adhere, how soon will it harden? Give it a watch and see what a beginner can get done if they try!

can you tell me how you flip the boat over just got myself one and worried about cracking the fiberglass by handling it wrong thx jPaul

I actually got three guys to help, but we did have to roll on the side and then over...I wouldn't think that was the most effective way, but it was all I had. If you do that, be careful and go real slow and it should be ok. I did recoat it with gel coat so if I did have cracks I covered them. Best of luck, it's not easy, but a lot of fun!

I have a 1999 J14 with a bunch of spider cracks, especially up around the front of the boat just above the rub rail. Does yours? If so are you going to do a video on fixing those? I like your videos and would love to see you do that.

I have some on the inside. My front was soft, but I put bonds fiberglass on it yesterday and it’s hard. Question...have you repainted and if so with what? I definitely will try to make that part of it!

@@outdoorheretic8232 awesome! Thanks! I have not yet. I’ve narrowed it down to a couple different paint choices: Tuff Coat, Pettit EZPoxy (from West Marine), or Raptor Liner bed liner (in white). Once I paint it I’m going to deck it with an EVA Foam, like SeaDek or Hydro-Turf.

Kinda have to agree with Joe...I have this skiff too. The putty doesn't hold up over time as it will eventually crack and fall out. I tried this before. A better solution would be to do as you have done and clean up the patch area. However a small fiberglass patch kit with mat and resin would be just as easily done and hold up much better. The putty would work well for filling minor gouging and scrapes as well as a feather in method after fiberglass repairs. Just my thoughts with my own personal experience with my skiff.
