Chewy Ltd Ferland most likely won't come back to Calgary for a couple reasons. First reason is Calgary doesn't have that much cap space. They will get a decent amount from Smith leaving, and they will most likely get a good amount from trading either Brodie or Stone in the offseason. But the Flames need to sign Tkachuk who will probably ask for roughly 7-8 million. They will also need to find another goalie AND pay Rittich, along with some other lower quality players. Last reason, they aren't in any need for Ferland and I don't think they will want to pay what he will ask for. Calgary has no need for another winger. Their first need is a goalie and then maybe a center.
@tornado72055 жыл бұрын
Chewy Ltd what? That makes absolutely no sense. The flames were just first in the west, all while having new young players like Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Hanifin, Lindholm, and Mangiapane. All of them will most likely get even better next season. The Flames won the west even though their goaltending was average at best throughout most of the season. Tkachuk is an RFA, so Calgary gets first pickings to keep him and Tkachuk even stated that he wants to stay in Calgary. Brad Treliving (Flames GM) is also known for signing his own players to really good contracts. Look at Lindholm's, Gaudreau's, Monahan's, and Giordano's contracts for example. I highly doubt Tkachuk gets anything higher than 9 million, unless it's for max length. And Ottawa is in complete rebuild mode right now. They would be stupid to even try and offer sheet for Tkachuk. If Ottawa does offer sheet him and they pay over 8.1 million, they will have to give Calgary 2 first round picks, a second, and a third. If they end up paying over 10.1 million, they will need to give Calgary 4 first round picks...... Not ideal for a rebuilding team. Especially since those first round picks will probably be top 10, maybe even top 5.

@tornado72055 жыл бұрын
Chewy Ltd not sure how we would get rid of Neal. He was terrible last year and every other team saw that. We would have to package him with something else. As for the signing of Tkachuk. Many people thought Gaudreau and Monahan would makes 7.5-8 million, but it was less. I remember many people thinking Lindholm would get a 6 million dollar contract. Even the people at sports center were saying him and Hanifin will probably get around 6 each. Yet they got less. Treliving is good at resigning his own guys. I really don't see Ottawa going after Tkachuk at all. They don't have their first round pick this year. And if they do get Tkachuk then they won't have their next two first round picks either, plus a second and third. And that's best case scenario. I could see a team like Colorado, St Louis, or maybe even both Chicago and Arizona trying it. But not the 31st place team in Ottawa. Everything also depends on what Marner gets. He will go first followed by the second tier guys. That main reason I believe Tkachuk will get 7.5-8 million is he has been inconsistent both this year and last year. He had a stretch this season where I believe he went 17 games without a goal. 17 games.... plus he was good in game 1 of the playoffs, but other than that he disappeared (to be fair so did everyone else lol). I could see him getting close to 9 as well though.

Seems like a good situation for both times. Whether he just wanted to play for the NYR, or he didn't feel like dealing with Carolina's logjam on the blue line, he's in a spot with a clearer path to NHL time immediately, which is what he wants. Seems like a good return for the Canes for a prospect who wasn't going to sign- either can help sweeten a trade for a player, or start to load up the next wave of the pipeline as the Canes continue to graduate players from Charlotte. Good for the rangers to get blue line help, and they pay the draft picks to get his rights and get him to take a step forward in development rather than having to go back to college another year. Plus now we can stop having Adam Fox signing watch so really it's a win for everyone.

Fox has way more value than two 2nds. I’m happy that Carolina got something back, but let’s not kid ourselves here. Anything less than a 1st is a big win for the Rangers, especially in this relatively weak draft. Leverage or not, maybe the Rangers’ GM didn’t want to rub salt in the wound of the Hurricanes’ GM, considering the unfortunate situation with Fox. Maybe he wanted to stay on good terms for future trades. Maybe another team already made an offer for Fox. Also, with the Rangers drafting like 30 players in 3 years once the 2019 draft is complete, in addition to getting one of Kakko/Hughes, they could afford to be more aggressive in getting their guy. Better to play it safe than risk another team trading for him. And the best part for the Rangers is that they can play him in the pros this coming season. Giving up a little extra to not stunt his development with another year in the NCAA is more than worth it. The Rangers won this trade before it began.

I guess I can see wanting to play for your hometown team, but Carolina is currently in the 2nd round!!!! So they're currently not a bad option either. Hypothetically, if I was in the NHL and I was a superstar playing for my hometown Canucks, I'd take a huge hometown discount to play at home, and to allow for management to put a team around me. I really respect Sid the Kid taking $8.7million when he could easily take league max every year. That's helped Pens win 3 Cups during the Crosby era.

I don't understand why people are so upset with him (Fox). Look at Calgary's defense, Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Hamilton, Stone, Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, Fantenberg has played well. Then in Carolina, Slavin, Pesce, Faulk, Hamilton, De Haan, TVR, Bean, Fleury, Carrick, McKeown. Given the situation in which you are an NHL level talent, would you rather; A) sign with the team that owns your rights and have to fight at least 4-5 guys on that team for a 6th defense spot or B) hold out, potentially sign with or be traded to your favorite team, play now and most likely get a range of 15-20 mins a night? I know the Rangers have guys like Shatty, Smith, Pionk, DeAngelo, and Lundkvist (in the future) on the right side but there's potential for Smith to be bought out and Pionk to be traded. And while they are good players, they're all certainly not on the level of CGY/CAR defense. Can you blame a high-level talent for wanting to play in the NHL (where he belongs) AND play for his hometown team? It's not a loophole. People reserve the right to get an education as a security precaution in case of injury and they can protect themselves from becoming wasted assets. Teams have 4 years to make room for college FAs. If Carolina wanted him there bad enough, Adam would not have to worry about the factors above. He's not cracking CAR/CGY defense with those contracts in place with those teams. It's not to say he's not good enough to or not willing to fight for those spots but it's unlikely just based on numbers and contracts.

I like the trade. I don't love the trade. The Rangers gave up a lot for a kid that they would have gotten anyways. Every team knew he wanted to play for his home state. Not sure the other 2 New York franchises, Isles and Sabres , were in on this one as well. As far as talent is concerned, he's the 8th highest rated defenseman. Why? Well he's definitely gifted offensively but he's 5'10" and doesn't have much upper body strength to shove a forward parked in front of the goalie, out of the way. His penalty killing is ok. His defense could be improved. The Rangers D was manhandled physically last season. They NEED big physical bodies. While it's nice to have a guy who can play the blue line, Fox is definitely behind K'Andre Miller & Lundkvist. Now, time for the Rangers to move (via buyout or trade): Brendan Smith, Marc Staal, Kevin Shattenkirk...nearly $14M/season in cap space.

6th pick in the 2nd round this year (and potentially a 3rd next)? Sweet. The Canes still killed the Flames trade (now Hanafin & Lindholm for Hamilton, Ferland, NYR 2nd & conditional NYR 3rd) as adding holding Fox long enough for his value to be recognized only gave them more (since he wasn't going to sign with Carolina or Calgary). I agree with the Rangers need for depth and right-handed D are a hot commodity.
@tornado72055 жыл бұрын
ozmang Flames definitely won that trade now. Lindholm and Hanifin are two young stars that have very reasonable contracts. They are pieces Calgary will be building around for years. Draft picks are an unproven commodity. Also Ferland is on a contract year so he may leave. He was also asking for 4 million halfway through the season. That's pretty pricy. Hamilton is a good d-man. All in all I'd say Hamilton and Hanifin are both around the same. Hamilton is a bit better now but Hanifin has the potential. As for the two wingers, it's pretty clear Lindholm is miles better than Ferland. The whole key to who won the draft when it happened was Adam Fox. He is one of the best prospects. Now that he is gone all we can compare are the two players on either team, and it is even more lopsided.
@ozy755 жыл бұрын
It'll be interesting to see how long the honeymoon works for Lindholm. I do know he was a big enough problem in the dressing room, he being gone makes the Canes better. I'll also concede I was screaming when Ferland wasn't traded at the deadline because of his injuries. I have enough friends who are Flames fans that I hope I'm wrong, but right now the Canes look to have greatly improved starting at the Flames trade.
@tornado72055 жыл бұрын
ozmang both team greatly improved, but I don't think Carolina improving was mainly because of that trade. When you look at the last 5 seasons. The Hurricanes were bottom 3 every season in save percentage. They had no goalies, at all. Now they actually have two guys that are pretty good. I think that is the main reason they are a good team. I've heard fans say it was because Peters was holding them back yet his team won the west with an average at best goaltender. I really do think Mrazek and that other guy (I forgot his name) are the main reason the Canes are where they are. Look at when they played with Darling at the beginning of the season! They were losing games. When they benched him they started winning.

Olle Svenningsson no, you can trade anytime. The only condition is the de facto trade deadline, and that only prevents acquisitions from playing in that upcoming postseason

😕, um, interesting. Hopefully he transcends to be a better nhl player than Vesey. Still not sure he's a better prospect than Miller, but he seems ready to play, which is great. We have a bunch of defense prospects, all bigger than Fox, hope he's another T. Barrie!

37th overall pick this year and a potential 2nd rounder in one of the deepest drafts this century? yeah that’s a pretty good trade for Carolina seeing as Fox was leaving for nothing next summer anyways
