That's a one in a million piece of wood, and you did a great job making it sing. That sort of surprise is what keeps us all making shavings and sawdust.

Thank you! The surprises in logs is why I love turning green wood. You really never know how they will look until you turn & finish them. Especially with wood like maple. It seems every maple log is different.

Nice work! What a wonderful surprise to find that burl hiding beneath the bark. I really like the shape as well. I'm about to attempt my first hollow form, thanks for the inspiration. Does that hollowing system you used come with the lathe or was it a seperate purchase?

You're by far one of my favorite turners on youtube. Your technique is great as are your projects and your humility makes your videos among the best I've seen. Thank you for taking the time to inspire people like me. One thing I haven't been able to pick up from your videos though is which finish do you prefer? I'm using Howards feed and wax but I know there are better. Thanks again, now off to your store ,again

Very pretty, indeed! Hey, do you mind sharing what the stabilizing rest is, which you are using as a tool rest during hollowing? Some kind of elbow thingy, which looks a treat at keeping the hollowing tool fully horizontal!

Your work is entertaining and inspiring! When you "once turn" a bowl, how long do you wait before sanding and oiling, and how do you prevent cracking during that time?
@andrewmccarn
@andrewmccarn Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I typically wait around 4 weeks if it needs to be finished. If possible I let it sit longer. My routine is after turning, bring it into my office to sit in front of the AC vent for a few weeks to slowly dry it out and then let it sit in the shop for at least a week or two before finishing. If it’s a bowl that’s prone to cracking, I’ll sometimes coat it with some water based polyurethane - sometimes multiple coats the first few weeks but other than that I don’t really do anything. I’ve been using the process for years after experimenting with it and it’s been the most successful way to dry bowls I have done. It’s odd but it works lol

SO, can I ask a question? Why did you opt for the 18/36 instead of the 24/36? Given you propensity for turning larger pieces, I would think that the 24" lathe would better suit your needs.
@andrewmccarn
@andrewmccarn Жыл бұрын
I would have loved to get the 24/36 but sadly my shop is only wired for 110v. I have had some quotes but I would have to practically get my shop completely re-wired because of how the current wiring is and that puts it just a little out of my budget for the moment. Hopefully one day though, being able to turn 24" between centers is the dream lol
@AlexGarcia-ly9fq

@@andrewmccarn well, that logic is sound. When I built my shop, I put 110 and 220 in (just in case). Thanks for he update. Great video BTW.

Thats it! Its the 5/8 version. Been using it for years and love it. My only recommendation would be to get the 3/4 version because it can be scaled down but I don't believe you can scale up the smaller ones. Enjoy the meeting, that would be awesome!
