I love what Carolyn says about pain and suffering-pain is part of life, suffering is a choice. I was trafficked by someone I thought was a friend when I was homeless at age 16. Was that painful? You bet. Excruciating. I suffered for years. Self-forgiveness finally released me from shame and suffering. I’m 69 now and experience such joy. Bad things happen to all of us, but the negative messages we inflict on ourselves as a result-that’s suffering, and I choose to have no part in it. I choose to face my day of reckoning with joy and love and no regrets and no resentments. We all come here to learn. ❤

Yes. We get to choose whether to make lemonade from the lemons 🍋 in life that often teach us the greatest, lessons in our lives. What too is suffering but a “thought” 🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

You are a beautiful soul. When I left home at 16 after a lifetime of violence and contempt I knew in my soul that their abuse was… on them and also a gift. But the world didn’t see it that way - at every turn victims were clamoring for justice (fair enough), rage (no point), to be heard (by WHOM?) and I lost my way. I’ve never ventured into bitterness but I’ve come close… and now at 56 I find souls like you who remind me we are here to LOVE life and each other and what we are handed is beyond our control but what we make of that pain is who we become in the world. Thank you.

Disagree. Much suffering is not ego driven. It is imposed by a force out of one's control. The Holocaust comes to mind. Every war and conflict. Genocides. The suffering in these events was not by choice.

Another beautiful quote, attributed to Rumi, is “Wherever you go whatever you do, Be in love.” It is always a boost to me to ask myself, “What am I in love with at this moment?” Often, it’s having running water! It’s even warm water! Or the ability to see! Having two hands to work with! There’s always something to be in love with.

Oh how I adore quotes... and those that you shared were just perfect. As was your mention of Helen Keller. I was enthralled with her story as a child and her amazing teacher Annie Sullivan. Thank you so very much - and I will close with one of MY favorite quotes from the timeless John O'Donohue: "I would love to live as a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding." - John O'Donohue. Blessings always.

Happy New Year Caroline & fellow Gracers! Listening to this, I recall a time when my life was saved, most unexpectedly. I was preparing to cross the street to get to my bus stop. I had the light to walk, and I looked to my left to be certain there weren't any speeders coming. No cars were present. So I start to step off the curb, one foot on the street and the other still on the sidewalk but getting ready to take the next step. Suddenly, I felt a hand grab the back of the collar of my jean jacket and it was suddenly pulling me back up onto the sidewalk. As this was happening, I thought "oh God, I'm gonna be mugged". While I'm having that thought, a car flashed by me- probably going at least 70 mph- so fast that all I can tell you is that it was a car, and I can't even tell you the color of it- it went that fast. back up on the sidewalk, I turned to see who had saved me and it was a young Japanese woman- probably in her 20's. She didn't speak English, but I'm certain she was aware of how thankful I was. Had the car hit me, there's no way I would've survived. I believe my Angels were intervening on my behalf. So yes, life on this Earth is a precious thing and to be spent as best as you know how.

Caroline, you inspired me to write this prayer. Dear Divine Grace, help the helpers to help with love. For those of us who love with all what we are without resistance with no regrets, for those of us that returned into a happy childhood when falling in love, not because our childhood was great but because through love for another human being, we can re-write the script and let that inner infant be free.

Thank you for such a message! In this day and age with AI and all, developing our own senses is so important I find and the story was so spot on for this year. As a teacher, I've had many issues to confront with students, and I always made sure they knew that I never hold a grudge and that each day was a new opportunity-- a clean slate-- with me, just as you said. It was an excellent policy, and I had forgotten about it in recent (post-Covid) times. Thank you for the reminder. I've been influenced by your work, beginning with Anatomy of the Spirit, since I was 23. That was a long time ago, and we've both been thru some messes at times, but I am deeply endebted to you and love your insights so much. Why not acknowledge that this time of year isn't a time to grow and change, but to rest, lay fallow and let the seeds of springtime grow strong roots as they push through the soil looking for the sunlight? It goes against the natural grain to force ourselves to start a new habit in the depths of winter (we don't all live in Florida or California with more sun than the rest of the country in winter time). Winter is a time of rest and reflection, planning and appreciation. Before the Gregorian calendar, January was not a time of renewal for those in North America. We set ourselves up for failure when we use this time for self-improvement. The proof is how many of these resolutions fall flat after the first 6 weeks of the year. Look at the Spring equinox as the time to start new habits. Use the additional sunlight and new warmth to act on those resolutions. Just a thought for those who wonder why their efforts fall flat in the dead of winter. But hugs and good luck to all who endeavor. Just don't be hard on yourself if you fall away from your new efforts. It's Nature telling you, not right now. And that's ok. I'm not saying it's an excuse to keep overeating or to keep smoking etc. Those tough transitions can be started one day a week, two or three days a week. By the time you hit the spring equinox, you'll be ready to do it daily. Or even half a week at a time. Just don't set yourself up for failure by going against your natural rhythms. Good luck!
