Hello, Everybody -
We're going to do an archetype video today. This time, I am responding to requests. And one of the archetypes I am getting requests for, which surprises me, is the monster. So I looked at this and thought, the monster archetype, alright, I'll go there.
The first thing I want to say about the monster archetype is that it goes back forever. Societies have had monsters because so much of the monster's evolution comes from mythic times and trying to understand power and the order of nature. And when something falls out of the order of nature, it's assigned power that human beings don't usually have. So, monsters represent a whole spectrum of power that the ordinary mortal doesn't have or doesn't want.
There's a part of us that finds the monster archetype incredibly intriguing because becoming conscious is so rigorous. You become more aware that every choice and every word packs a punch. The monster archetype offers liberation from the constant effort that being a conscious, good person requires. So you say, I don't want to live that high. And a monster doesn't have to. What a monster gets to do is disregard every rule that makes us human.
But, our goodness always wants to believe we can defeat that.
Okay, this was something. Thank you all.
Love,
Caroline

Thanks so much. Listening reminds me of when I read all of Anne Rice's vampire novels. What intrigued me was the desire of the older vampires to discover the origin of 'evil' and how they became vampires. It's a big, big topic to explore.

Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are is a classic! Max, the child sent to bed without his supper (time out), ends up controlling all the wild things! It's a story about power and the child is the one with power!

I think the monster represents our dark side, which we disown but love in a different (separate) character because in this world the monster is, like you said, free to do anything it wants no matter how vicious or destructive. Our own dark sides want to be that free and uninhibited. So we admire, but blame the monster for the cruelty in the world and therefore don’t have to look inward and do the often painful and hard work to “tame” our inner monster. However we could instead study the monster outside in order to understand the monster inside, which thereby controls it. The question is, do we really want to control it?

I've learned to give gratitude, grace and appreciation to my inner monster(s). They are potent teachers and messengers. Sometimes protective. How they came to be, the why of them is very interesting. Once I see them, understand them, they usually stop their screams for attention.

It would be interesting to explore the monster as a way to access that above average strength/force in a controlled way. I’m thinking about the Hulk, how injustices made him mad and then he released his anger against the oppressor. Maybe a cautionary tale for the ones who exercise power without restraint. They may unleash forces beyond their own.

Check out Irene Lyon’s work - As an attachment parenting / trauma informed ( was a single mom & helped care for 4 of my grandchildren ) person - I truly believe the survival and evolution of the human species ; depends upon becoming conscious of and engaging with understanding &. Compassion - the monsters within us ! ❤ thank you Caroline , for this wonderful study !!

I love all your content and we are regularly listeners. I am also one of your many, many students. The thread I am following through your examples The Shape of Water, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Frankenstein is that the "monsters" in each of those stories were full of compassion and what we could call goodness. As a parent, I feel that the embrace of monsters is an effort to help teach my child to look deeper that another's skin. I am working to help my kiddo and the kiddos I work with in my practice to look inside each person, to pay attention to their energy and to not get caught up in physical differences. The true monsters in each of the three examples above are the "normal looking" or wealthy humans, while those with the monstrous appearances are the conscious and compassionate beings. So I wonder if the embrace of The Monster, in its light, is about the embrace of seeing others more deeply.

I thought another important side of monsters are to be impulsive , the instinctual energy (which can help you survive ) is not rising to higher possibilities. A narcissic impulse , (concentrated version of reality turned to self only, no empathy, no inclusion of others reality and life force)… Thanks for those precious videos !

Yes!!!! Let’s do the BEAST!!!! I was soooooo unconsciously interwoven into beauty and beast. Hades and Persephone, vampires too (but as you mentioned is so astonishing as it’s a predator) and also dragon mythos too….. PAIN IS PLEASURABLE for many in these mythic archetypal “kinks” I’d be honoured to discuss it further with you anytime!

About using monsters instead of angels, I think it has to do with the 'familiarity breeds contempt' effect. As people became more materialistic, the idea that we should only listen to beautiful things became a kind of outdated role model from the baby boomer generation. Publishers then used monsters to challenge this concept. Unfortunately, most people need something shocking to grab their attention, so monsters became a popular choice. I remember being the odd kid out who listened to the monsters instead of the angels. As a child, I thought I wasn't pretty, and the monsters resonated with me. For other kids, the monster figures were appealing because they were rebellious. In the 80s and 90s, no one expected an angel to challenge the status quo. Well, my childhood was steeped in the hip-hop and punk era, after all! XD Do I like monsters today? Nope. I prefer angels, literally.

I always thought characterization of a monster varies. There are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual "monsters"? I think monsters are an extreme of a perspective across from angels, for example. They are the same thing but different extremes, dark and light if you will. I also suppose it goes toward your definition of a monster. I have met some people would deem as monsters due to their physical deformity, but they have the kindest souls. I liked your ending line: people always think they can overcome the monsters. Thank you for the new word: teratophillia!

Teratophilia - Since so much of our sexual attraction is a distorted image blossomed from the desire to act out or heal subconscious childhood patterns/dynamics, I wonder if some of this attraction comes from the fantasy of knowing that a monster could inflict great pain & misery on you if they wanted to.... but because they love you so much, they're willing to fight against their very nature to protect you instead.

It is fascinating to me how you still bring up examples from history & manage to avoid & ignore mentioning our current-time monster entities carrying out g3nocid3s daily since over 6 months! I love all your work, yet I keep waiting for you to speak truth to power on this topic & address it openly. Where are those conscious aware spiritual leaders of our age & why are they all concerned more about their brand & being banded than about speaking TRUTH? Maybe you’ll dive into the archetype of a leader if you haven’t yet!
