Caroline is SUPER into folklore and mythology. Pang features a ton of references to Greek mythology in particular. In this video, she’s playing Persephone, Goddess of Spring and also Goddess of the Underworld and wife of Hades. In Greek Mythology, Hades falls in love with Persephone and makes a deal with her that she can live in the mortal world for half the year (bringing spring and life to earth) but must spend the other half with him in the Underworld (thus letting fall and winter come until Persephone brings spring back). Caroline did a brilliant job in bringing this to life in a whimsical and contemporary way both in the song AND the video (even the name of the song is a play on words that kinda sums up the myth). Now you know the backstory, the video makes a little more sense. The devil/demon hands at the beginning opening a book with chalk marks, indicating the passing of time and Caroline/Persephone marking off another day (or year or decade or millennia). Her dancing alone and lamenting about her love who’s “so hot you’re hurting my feelings”, being Hades who she loves but also hates in some ways for making her live in the Underworld, yet she does miss him when he’s not there. Hades also has constant work to do in the Underworld so Persephone is often left feeling neglected in a place she doesn’t want to be. I love all the little details that add to the story: -How her hair is styled to look almost wet (except when it’s blowing in an unnatural wind) so you get this feeling that she’s physically hot and sweating. -How her eyes glow at one point, her singing creates this neon green cloud, and the previously mentioned hair blowing unnaturally all point to her being something other than mortal. -The small set, with the book counting the passing of time directly in the middle, which she dances around and around, with a lot of repeating choreography (you even see her previous footsteps on the sandy floor), giving this sense of confinement, restlessness, repetition, and a feeling of constantly waiting for something (either Hades or when she can go back to the mortal realm or both). I love your videos. You seem so genuinely yourself. You’re always kind, respectful, funny, vulnerable, intelligent, insightful, and you really just let yourself experience whatever your watching or listening to in such an open minded and freeing way. I’d love to see you do more Lady Gaga music videos since her visuals are always stunning, there’s always some kind of story, and she always has incredible fashion/makeup/hair and dancing (things I know you love). I also think you’d love Tori Amos. Starting at her first album, Little Earthquakes, which came out in 1991. She’s one of the most unique and incredible artists of all time and is frequently cited as having some of the most influential albums ever. Lastly, Bo Burnham is completely brilliant as a musician and comedian, and FINNEAS, Billie Eilish’s brother/best friend/co-writer/producer, has his own music which is truly fantastic and also a completely unique take on music videos (every single official video is done in one continuous take). Btw, these are just suggestions (I already know you’ve done a ton of Gaga stuff) and I’m honestly excited no matter what you react to because I watch this channel for YOU. Sorry for the absolute NOVEL LENGTH comment. I hope it was at least interesting. Meghan ❤️
