At an AA meeting a new girl sat next to me. I was explaining how the meeting worked. She thought I was funny and laughed and giggled, very good fun. I had no idea I was angering the whole 30 people at the meeting. "We are not a glum lot" That's not true in this meeting. They like to keep most of the lights off. Anyway, three people spoke up and called me a predator. It's not possible for me to relay the pain, anger and isolation I am experiencing. Today I watched a police video. At the end the Police Captain announced, "The predator is dead." Is that what I deserve according to my judges. This brain fog is very irritating but I go out to my wood shop and make a bowl or something like a goblet on my wood lathe. And I pray.

Not dodging trying to get sober, always strive to do so. I have recently stopped attending AA because of the glum atmosphere in a reflective shame game. For me my alcoholism is based largely around shame. I found just going to meetings was undoing my progress. And i wasn't even someone who even shared or talked except to read. Im so sorry that happened to you. I hope you're doing better these days. There are meetings like ALanon or Smart Recovery or NAMI. Some people who go to meetings are looking for the community on a common pretense. I wish you so much luck. You are not a predator. Some AAs are full of bitter individuals that have the choice to embrace the structure and fall in line, or lose control like before. You were empathetic and friendly.

You are speaking nothing but the truth. When all this brain fog was going on that was being caused behind this group of Narc monkey's is what I still call them. I use to live watching TV good movies and reading books I couldn't focus I would cry and the worse their abusive words got. It was horrible. I didn't want to wake up because of these people and the on going stuff. I knew then that not only did I have childhood trauma but as an adult these people was laying another track of trauma on top of the vgildh abuse and preteen years that I had PSTD disorder behind. I remember waking up but was sitting up and was thrown into a dark place could not snap out of it. I was in the battlefield in my mind feeling everything as if it was happening to be as it did when I was a kid in the midst of this place these people sent me through hell on top of it. I called out to God and one or two of the safest people I could remember I was safe around that I knew yet everything was dark my vision too. I then was able to pick up a sound of someone in my trailer park playing some music with loud base and I pulled it in as a female friend being their and was able to come out of it. People just don't know how hard it is and it's not a laughing matter. Trauma and survivors of abuse of any kind are not a target got heartless people. Guard yourself from abusers who play with what you been through and add more trauma it throws you backwards taking your mind longer yo heal. The mind never forgets such people and it's a good thing in a way because it reminds you who not to be around.

I will say this: when you verbally/physically/emotionally abuse your child then you’re storing up problems for the future. The reason for this is because when your child gets to adulthood they’re emotionally damaged by your actions regardless of how long ago it took place. Even if you suddenly have an epiphany, realise in horror what you’ve done to your child and then offer them a genuine apology, it’s too late. The damage has already been done. It’s then up to the child to do the therapy needed in order to recover. Once you’ve reached that point that’s it. Nothing you say or do will reverse the damage so please, be careful

This is the first time of having this explained like this. It all fits so well with what has and keeps happening to me. It explains learning difficulties I had and have and the film and book references spot on. With books I can actually read the first page and then I’m gone elsewhere but the strange thing is I seem to still be reading as I have got to the end of a page and yet I can not remember a thing. I can watch a film and not know what has happened. I wish I had known about this 40 years ago. I now realise the effect of the trauma I suffered as a youngster and hadn’t associated it with how I react when I feel threatened. This really is an eye opener thanks so much for posting this.

Good info.. But to ‘not respond like a 5yo’ can take several years, if there is serious trauma. I was led to believe that some yoga, massage, tapping and a bit of therapy would do the trick. There really is a very large spectrum of trauma that should be referred to a bit more often. If you’ve had serious trauma, don’t expect the healing to be quick, but you will get there.

You realize that all the BS the narcissist has told you is about them, not about you, you start to find your self worth again because you no longer allow yourself to feel like the person they're trying to turn you into by telling you things that cause you all the negative feelings that damage the brain. By retraining your brain to deflect the abuse by the narcissist (I also suggest learning as much as you can about their tactics, their mannerisms and their intentions so you can easily pin point when they're manipulating you) you can reverse the damage that's been done, even if it's been years. Think of it like this: if your relationship was a sci fi movie, your brain is your spaceship and the enemy spaceship is the narcissist's brain. They're chasing you through space, their primary objective is to disable your defenses, take over your vessel, enslave your crew (your brain functions) and ultimately rule the galaxy (their own little world and everyone in it) through fear and intimidation because they feel entitled. So after awhile your ship is damaged from all the hits it's taken, your crew is running out of motivation to keep going because it seems like the outcome is inevitable, you're weapons systems have been disabled, your hull is breached, there are fires everywhere, it seems hopeless, a few more hits and you're all done for, facing death or a life of slavery to the dark side. But then suddenly, the captain of the ship (you, your consciousness, your soul) who has been pouring over the ship's manual looking for any possible way to survive and escape, suddenly discovers that your ship has force shields. You begin to revive the crew who have been sitting around, dejected by telling them about this life saving defense you have. Now whenever you detect that the enemy is getting ready to fire at your ship, you raise your shields and deflect it. This gives your crew time to put out the fires, to repair the ship, and if necessary, engage the hyper drive and GTFO there! When you start to be unaffected by their attempts to make you feel worthless, you take away their power over you. Now this can be dangerous in some situations, it can cause them to stumble at first, unnerved by their lack of ability to reduce you to a sobbing mess. That small victory is exhilarating but if they have one or more of their hooks in you, which is anything that they can legally do to cause you grief or difficulties, then you'll need to be stealthy about how you go about displaying your newly discovered defenses. You might have to turn it around and begin playing them instead of showing your cards right away because they will double down once they know you've begun to resist them. Joint bank accounts, custody of children, cell phone plans in their name instead of yours, car title holders, insurance policies, computer logins, all these things are things that they can potentially take away or use to pull the rug out from underneath of you if you're not thinking about them and slowly but surely, taking action to get out from under their control, while they're none the wiser.

She's not blaming anyone, she's explaining cause and effect and giving people who are stuck in a relationship with a narcissist or someone with narcissistic personality traits how to think differently to grab the control back of their own view of the world. This is much better than than just telling them to escape it, to get out and never look back which just isn't possible, at least right away, for some people. This could be the first step for people who don't know how to get unstuck, the step that helps them finally be able to figure out how to escape the relationship, how to survive without the narcissist.
