Yes, I add childrens books on goodreads if I've read them. For me, the goodreads annual reading challenge isn't about the number. It's just a really lovely way to track my reading, to look back on the year, and see the layout of all the different kinds of books I've read. It's also useful for finding other related books, because of how they pop up on people's created reading lists etc (thanks algorithm).

I count every book sometimes I go back and revisit childhood favorites to help get me out of reading slumps and I also read alot of manga books are books and when we track them it also tracks the types of books we are reading . And the number is meant to be a personal goal and count everyone reads different things

I also count every book. All of them are books with stories to tell, so make sure you include them all. And I'm a bit of a mood reader, though I do have a huge tbr I tend to read books when I'm in the mood for them, I also put books down and pick others up depending on my moods, which is why I always seem to have a dozen books going at once. I go where the mood strikes. TBR's are more 'WistLIsts' than set in stone lists, for me anyway. My TBR holds books I want to read someday, recommendations, books mentioned by booktubers that I like the sound of etc . . . so my tbr is fluid, more like an everchanging river!!

I feel the same with David Copperfield. I enjoy it, but I do find I get fed up with it. Reading it on audiobook too (narrated by Ralph Cosham), but I have to put it down after 3-4 chapters. It's not binge-able. But I do enjoy it! ❣️

I think the charm and humor of the narrative voice stops being charming and funny the longer I read it? That's why I have to put it down at the 3hr mark. Idk if that makes sense 😅

I sometimes include children's books if I am interested in them enough. If I only read them in passing to my kid, then no. 😆 I'm liking David Copperfield, but I am only reading little by little because I just feel so much for him. Plus, as a mom, his relationship with his mom just hits hard. 😭

I, for one, could not be happier with my Audible membership. Besides Armitage's performance of David Copperfield, I've enjoyed nine other complete books since the beginning of this year. I'll be starting Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead later this week. As for the literary merits and my criticism of them, I'm of the opinion that it's not germane at this point, since DC is an accepted and acknowledged masterpiece, Though, if I were to give a hint to better enjoyment of it, I would say to appreciate Dickens' warped sense of humor, which is at times a little colorful.

Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead is sooooo much better than Dickens, IMO (10 star versus 5 star book). It is a modern take, with modern language and slang, and quite a bit more humor. Plus, it is a few hundred pages shorter with nothing lost. I cannot comment on the audiobooks as I physically read both of them.

@@kurtfox4944 I'm physically reading Catcher in the Rye, which I'm enjoying. Generally, I use my E-reader Kindle device for foreign languages because their dictionaries are really good. However, without any doubt the literature experience I'm most enjoying is the Audible. The narrations genuinely are performances, and I find my retention is at least as good as hard copy, if not better.

I cannot fathom sitting in my living room after work ... just listening. I just have the 'appropriate' time to listen to them

@@kurtfox4944 Yes, I too listened to some wonderfully long things when it was necessary to drive an hour or more each way. However, Audible is much more than a mere books-on-tape supplier. Their readers are carefully chosen so as to create a gestalt experience where the sum is greater than the individual parts.

I don't make TBRs but I know for sure I want to start reading The Way of Kings in April and continue reading Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga. The best book I read in March was The Silent Companions! Other good reads this month were: We Had To Remove This Post; Girl, Woman, Other; Breasts and Eggs; The Daughter of Doctor Moreau.

I absolutely adored David Copperfield with all my being a five star for me, on the other hand I’m dreading the catcher in the rye. Unfortunately Big magic wasn’t my cup of tea I dnfed it. I believe I’m a mood reader; although I have a TBR I feel it adds pressure to my reading experience and if I’m not in the mood for a book I can’t finish it so it ends up in the pile of to be read hopefully this year.

David Copperfield is failing Emma, too, perhaps more than it has let you down. This saddens me, as well, as Dickens is my favorite, but so many aspects enter into a reader's response that it's impossible to predict what a given work might do. Or fail to do. Your commentary was, as always, insightful and delightful, and that illustrator uses pen-and-ink well, but isn't better than you, Carolyn. Your touch, the voice in your work, elevates it to global level. Thanks for another good round-up of interesting books. Be well, stay safe.

Count all the books, it's part of who you are as a reader. And to be honest I never read children's books but if I wanted to I would probably think of you as a resource for good recommendations and might check your goodreads for some ideas :)

I decided not to count the picture books I read. As an elementary librarian, I read hundreds of picture books every year. 😁 Also, The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore is one of my favorite picture books! It is such an endearing story and the illustrations are wonderful! So glad to see it getting some love on youtube!!

Oh may I recommen you the graphic book Bear by Staffan Gnosspelius. Using silent narrative with no word and just illustrations to tell the story, it was a gem and I think you gonna adore it ❤

I do not have a TBR list, but a TBR "pile"... which always grows rather than diminishes. Currently it is at well over 300 books; with so many on the pile, I grab one I am in the mood for... so YES, both TBR and mood reader. ;^) Some children's books, chapter books, and Middle Grade books do count. I think some readers believe that because they are quite 'simple' that they do not count. But, I challenge some of you to write books of the calibre of, say, _Bridge To Terabithia_ or _Holes_ that has age-appropriate content, language-appropriate vocabulary, short enough to not lose a young reader's interest, and still deliver a message or meaning that is relevant to their age, memorable, and yet is not a milquetoast Hallmark Channel or "after school movie" adaptation, ... or too deep and over their heads. That said, some of the books do not count, such as learning-to-read books that emphasizes language constructs such as diphthongs and other phonics, A is for Apple books, I-Spy books, ... some are written to be age-appropriate, but are boring to adults (which are often boring to kids, too). I only liked two Dickens' books: A Tale of Two Cities, and A Christmas Carol. Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead is sooooo much better than Dickens' David Copperfield, IMO (10 star versus 5 star book, and in my top 3 of 2022). It is a modern take, with modern language and slang, and quite a bit more humor. Plus, it is a few hundred pages shorter with nothing lost, and much gained. Much more relatable. My monster for March was 1Q84 by Murakami. I do not recommend it; misogynistic to the max. Best fiction in March 2023 was Ironweed, by William Kennedy. Best non-fiction was James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time.

David Copperfield is actually my favorite Dickens that I’ve read so far. And it’s because of Betsy Trotwood. She is the real hero of this story, not Dave. 😂 I think the problem is Dave. Lol. He annoyed me a bit as did Holden Caulfield. It’s hard to really fall in love with a book when you are not gelling with the narrator.

Yes, apparently the super-classic of the 1960s hasn't aged well. Certainly as one reads the first half of the story there is a sense of the action taking place in some alternate reality, nonetheless it seemed very real and poignant at the time.

I read Braiding Sweetgrass and Hamnet in March. David Copperfield is good but I agree, its not one of my top 3 Dickens. I made a 23 in 2023 TBR this year and so far I've read four from that list but now I want to read Big Magic and a couple of others. So I might deviate from it later in the year. That's okay.
