Wow, the way your mom talks about reading to you and your sister really reminds me of my mom. She used to read to me and my brother who’s a year older than me every night. She was never a big reader herself until the last few years, but my brother and I both love reading. Reading to your kids is such a great gift you can give them!

My mother and my older siblings and my dad would all read to me before bed. Then the battles began when they found out I was reading at the foot of my bed on the floor by my nightlight. After that it was flashlights; I'd hide them under the pillow and once the door was closed be back to reading in the ante meridiem hours. Finally, years later, I began to sneak back out of the bedroom as a preteen and found out about "Big Chuck and Little John" and "Late Night with Johnny Carson." My second brother, eleven years older than me, would never tell on me, but when I was caught at that he'd get more talking to than me before I was let up to bed. I'll be 50 pretty soon now. Dan 1960 David 1962 Ruth 1963 Chrissy 1965 and Tommmy (that's me) 1973 Ruth was louder and more talkative than all her siblings put together and my mother said she never dreamed a boy would surpass her, but I talked more than all four of them put together. At some point in first grade she told me she didn't need a running dialogue of every single thing that happened at school. I wonder what she thought of me telling her Mary would lift up her skirt at nap time and twirl so I could see her underwear in kindergarten? I suppose that bought me a few more months of being allowed to talk about everything, just so she could hear what else develops in my crazy brain. I remember on the way to first grade my carpool girl kissed me in the backseat on the way to school. The second day of school she couldn't get her kiss, as I had seen Mary again. Instead of a kiss, I got a metal lunch box to my head from the girl in carpool. Life can get tough quick.

I’m a dad of three kiddos (ages 9, 6, & 4) who loves reading and who is intentional with reading with them often. I’m glad to see your mom’s passion for books was passed on to you- hopefully it’ll be the same with my family!
