The Carpenters are brother and sister. They were known for: 1. Richards choice of music. He specifically picked songs to match Karen’s voice. He is a superb arranger, composer, and lyricist. 2. Karen and Richards over dubbing and harmonies. 3. Karen’s pitch perfect, natural, and effortless angelic voice. Her voice is timeless and a one in a billion. 4. Karen was also an awesome drummer. She drummed many songs while she sang in perfect pitch. An exceptional skill. Their music is so well composed. Richard loved to use strings, horns, tamborines, along with his tremendous piano skills.

You have opened the Carpenters rabbit hole. It’s a wonderful journey with a layer of sadness. Karen died of a heart attack in 1983 at 32. It was related to her Anorexia Nervosa. They were the #1 American act of the 1970’s. Their legacy, thanks to reactors like you #KeepingTheMusicAlive Thank You. Karen and Richard did almost all the backing vocals, only them. There were exceptions but few before Karen died and more after. Here’s a few classic songs, pick the video with the most millions of views and you really can’t go wrong. Just know there are no bad Carpenters songs. Rainy Days and Mondays Close To You We’ve Only Just Begun A Song For You Ticket To Ride Goodbye To Love All the above are covers they did, except Goodbye which Richard wrote with John Bettis his writing partner. You started with a banger. They’re all great. Enjoy the ride. Joe

There is actually a genetic phenomenon that occurs with siblings who share DNA. The folds in their vocal chords form very similarly due to shared genes. So do the nasal and oral cavities where sound resonates. They also share enunciation and speech patterns learned from the same parents. It's the same reason that often someone can't initially tell one sibling apart from another over the telephone when the caller can't see which one actually answered. As siblings grow up together, especially musically talented siblings, they also have the advantage of singing together for longer periods of time. These many reasons are why brother and sister bands like the BeeGees, Beach Boys, Everly Brothers, Corrs, Carpenters, etc harmonize so flawlessly together.

They were also heavily influenced by Motown. In the early days of their career they entered a Talent Contest and sang Dancing In The Street by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and won. They also covered The Marvellettes Please Mr. Postman in 1975 that went to Number One, as well as Beechwood 45789. In 1983 on Motown 25 TV Host Dick Clark of American Bandstand acknowledged them as one of many White Artists who covered Motown Songs.

At one time, Karen was ranked #5 greatest drummers in the world. When they started, she considered herself as a drummer who just happened to be able to sing a little. As they became more popular, she was moved away from her instrument of choice for commercial reasons. The industry didn't like her behind the drumset. She was such a talent. I'm the official video of rainy days and Mondays, after the couple of pics, they go live to the studio, and she's playing the drums. Great reaction.😊

She actually died of heart failure and had put on weight in the last 1-2 years of her life. I also had a heart attack and cardiac arrest in my 30s and I was a cross country runner at the time. Heart failure can happen at any age. Of course she also had anorexia but it was not the official cause of her death. It probably had more to do with her long term use of laxatives and other drugs, that even her doctors were unable to control.

They were one of the most successful brother sister acts of all time. Superstar was also covered by Luther Vandross (RIP). Sadly for all of their professional success, they had some personal issues. Their mother was jealous of Karen's success while Richard was such a perfectionist he would take pills to stay awake and sleeping pills as well. She sadly became the first celebrity to bring the issue of anorexia to the masses. She was close friends wtih olivia newton john and when she appeared on her tv special she didn't look well at all. She had to go to rehab and get well, but the laxatives and diet pills did a number on her body. she would die in february 1983.

No it's not all about her brother. It's about both of them. Two incredible talents. It doesn't matter how well he arranged it they could never have achieved this with any other singer. It's that simple. They were both 10/10 at what they did and Richard just knew his sister better than anybody and knew how to get the best out of her. But no way would Richard have been what he was without his sister. And vice versa. You just can't simplify it down like that.

The Carpenters and Luther Vandross are the most well known versions. It has been covered by numerous artists, and of course, the "styles" of them vary, so you can get one you'll like. The original was by Delany and Bonnie and Friends, written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. The idea for the song was from Rita Coolidge (she was a backup singer for D&B and Friends at that time) who when watching groupies of famous performers thought there was subject matter in the interactions she had seen that would work for a song.

You have a genuine taste for singing talent. Im in my late 60s and remember Carpenters well. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Close To You, We've Only Just Begun, Rainy Days and Mondays, A Place To Hideaway, and A Song For You. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia.

According to 'Playboy', come on, that's just a bit ridiculous isn't it? Obviously a supernatural singer. But you can't put her ahead of Bonham on drums, that's just ludicrous. I'll remind you that Playboy was a wank mag for men who thought themselves a cut above the average wanker and was most definitely not the definitive word of music or art.

Time has been kind to the wonderful music recorded by The Carpenters. Sadly it was not the case during their time Record sales, television specials, and concerts were all grand successes but the alleged “hip” entertainment media derided their music and big market radio personalities made fun of their “square” image. The lead music columnist and music critic for Billboard famously referred to Karen has” Richard’s pudgy little sister “. The critics and the in crowd called their music old fashioned, uninspired, and tired . Even the when their songs would be climbing up the charts, some pop/ rock radio stations would not play them because they feared being painted as not cool by competitors. It was a weird time and the counter culture, like the Woke today, would viciously tear down people that would not fit what they considered to be acceptable. The attacks , personal and professional, had a toll on both Karen and Richard Carpenter that makes an American tragedy . Fortunately for the people, the critics and arbiters of what should be heard having faded to the dumpster of the talentless where they belong and the quality and beauty produced by Karen and Richard exists for our enjoyment. Enjoy your rewarding journey discovering the music of The Carpenters.

I think you might enjoy the music of ABBA and also Ambrosia. Ambrosia had some really romantic songs. Great '70s bands! ❤❤

Karen's voice is completely unique -- perfectly pitched alto/contralto. Angelina Jordan has a very similar range and tone.
